Defending World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car champion Daryn Pittman will lead the series into the Merle Stone Chevrolet Thunderbowl Raceway season-opener on March 14 & 15. The driver of the Kasey Kahne Racing/ Great Clips No. 9 machine captured eight main event wins & scored 13 fast-time awards en route to his first career World of Outlaws title last season. Pittman raced to a pair of top-five fini shes last year at the Thunderbowl and will be searching for his first ever win at the track in March. The Owasso, Oklahoma veteran did come close to victory at the one-third mile oval in 2004, only to have a right rear tire go flat coming for the checkered, which allowed Terry McCarl to sneak by for the win off turn four.
While competing in the Golden State during his career Pittman has routinely been solid and is a past winner of the prestigious "Gold Cup Race of Champions" at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, as well as the former "Harvest Classic" at the Calistoga Speedway. His victory at the Gold Cup in 2006 paid him a handsome $50,000 and came aboard the Titan Garages No. 21 mount that season.
"It was great to see Daryn Pittman and Kasey Kahne Racing win the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series title last season," commented Thunderbowl Raceway promoter Steve Faria. "We're really excited about having the World of Outlaws kick-off their California tour at the Thunderbowl with a two-night show and that really has become a staple of the track. If you've never seen the Outlaws in Tulare, do yourself a favor and make plans to be here on March 14 & 15. They always put on an incredible show at the Thunderbowl and this year's event is shaping up to be one of the biggest yet."
To purchase your tickets for the “Greatest Show on Dirt” at Steve Faria’s Thunderbowl Raceway on March 14 & 15 contact (559) 688-0909. All seating is reserved during the double-header weekend with Bleacher tickets costing $40 and Grandstands seats $45 each night. A seating chart is available online at www.thunderbowlraceway.com
This coming season is the 12th overall year of the Merle Stone Chevrolet Thunderbowl Raceway hosting the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series. The inaugural event occurred in September of 2003 when 20-time series champion Steve Kinser of Bloomington, Indiana scored the victory over Aliquippa, Pennsylvania's Tim Shaffer and local favorite Jason Meyers from Clovis, CA.
Last year’s World of Outlaws main events in March at the Thunderbowl were captured by Elk River, Minnesota’s Craig Dollansky and San Jose, California’s Tim Kaeding respectively. The double-header this March in Tulare will also fire-off a five-week stint for the series in California and is part of the "Salute to the King" tour, in what will be Steve Kinser's final full-time WOO season.
The Merle Stone Chevrolet Thunderbowl Raceway is located at the Tulare County Fairgrounds on the corner of Bardsley and K Streets in Tulare, California. From the junction of SR 99 and SR 137, go west on SR 137. At South K go south one-half mile to the Fairgrounds. Camping is also available at the fairgrounds located off turns three and four. Be sure & like the track on Facebook by searching Thunderbowl Raceway.
