From Flat Out
Prior to the Trophy Cup (which he won) an auction for the "MAKE A WISH" foundation had four helmets signed by the Kaeding clan. he and his best bro Rico evidently had a bidding war. Kyle won the bid, $32,000 and then donated the helmets to the Sprint car Hall of Fame...!
Ascot was the greatest of all time..
West Capital wasn't half bad either..

They weren't donated, they are "on loan" to the Hall of Fame & Museum.
Kyle can ask for them back at any time and they will be returned to his personal collection.

I was there when it happened. The bidding was between Rico, Kyle and Tony Stewart.
Let's be honest, Rico and Tony have much deeper pockets. I thought for sure Kyle was just trying to make the bid go higher and either Tony or Rico would ultimately purchase them. I forget the numbers, but Kyle started out with a bid. After awhile, Tony and Rico bid higher. I figured Kyle got off the hook. Than Kyle decide he would outbid them, seemed pretty honest and genuine. I thought for sure Tony would not allow Kyle to out due him, plus lets be honest, this would be a tax right off for Tony. To my surprise, Tony and Rico stopped bidding, and Kyle was the man for the charity
I guess it was good karma, Kyle won the race (which I think he said was the most important race for him to win over even Knoxville or Daytona 500).
One of the reasons the helmets are so special, I believe they said Howard Kaeding only wore 3 or 5? helmets in his career. Today, I think drivers go thru that in a year, hell some in a month. But it is a special set of helmets from Howard, Brent, Tim and Bud Kaeding, and is history for the famous sprint car family on the West Coast.
Nice jesture by Kyle for giving back (and I bet $32000) is alot of money to Kyle.

A $32,000 donation was made to make-a-wish! That's the important donation, not whether they were donated or "on loan " to the hall of fame!
Good job to the bidders and thanks to them all and especially Kyle!

Bud was on the phone with Tony during the bidding but could not get Tony to make a bid!
The whole thing was on my Trophy Cup dvd.

For the record it was Rico and Kyle bidding together, they split the donation to Make-a-Wish.

National Sprint Car Hall of Fame employees stated "on loan" to me face to face. Said that he did not donate them to the Hall of Fame & Museum, but is allowing them to display there.
Just because it's been "reported" as a donation, doesn't make it so. To donate, you have to fill out the proper forms, the Hall of Fame has to take ownership, insure the items, etc..

Does it really matter if they donated the helmets to the Hall of Fame or if they loaned them? The fact of the matter is the Make-A-Wish Foundation got an extra $32,000.00. These two cut their teeth in sprint car racing with the Kaeding family and felt it was the right thing to do to purchase these historic lids.

The helmets were auctioned at the 20th annual Trophy Cup. I engraved all the special cases with the records of each driver. The plaque that went to the Hall of Fame read as follows. This display made possible throught the generous donation of $32,000. to the 20th Annual Trophy Cup Benefitting the Make-A-Wish Foundation at Thunderbowl Raceways Tulare, CA October 18, 2013 by Kyle Larson and Rico Abreau. Also a Donation letter was send to both from Make-A-Wish
