+2   I don't watch it myself but the rest of my family loves it.    Seems to me like the trend is that being a redneck sells.   I'm not terribly sure why people find it so entertaining, but the bigger a hick you are the more popular you can be.   Even worse than this show is that Honey Boo Boo crap.    Anyone that finds that entertaining has to be missing brain cells....

christian or not, the dude is your typical bigot..and that's fine, he can be whatever he wants... but the bottomline is when you are employed by someone and you make public comments that can reflect negatively on your employer, they have the right to suspend or fire you... what is the controversy? because he calls himself a christian, he's allowed to be a bigot? 

 

i'm fairly certain the majority of everyone in this country who works for a decent sized company would not make these type of comments infront of the owner/ceo of your employer...



Conservative Christians generally believe that the Bible is God's word.    You can choose believe that it isn't if you like.   Everything he said that supposedly makes him a bigot was being quoted from the Bible.   I reckon that makes God a bigot doesn't it?      

 

I for one don't have the first problem with anything he said.

There is a petition people can sign to protest the suspension at IstandwithPhil.com for anyone interested in doing that.   Personally I think A&E will reconsider or else they'll lose the show completely.    This isn't that much different than the Chick-Fil-A deal and I can't help but notice that there are tons of people still eating at those places.

Phil sifts out only what he wants to see in the book of Corinthians.


He quotes this scripture and everyone comes rushing to his defense: 

1 Corinthian 6:9: "Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind."


On the other hand he completely ignores this scripture penned by the same writer in the same book:

1 Corinthians 11:14-15 "Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory?  For long hair is given to her as a covering".

Paul's condemnation of long hair on men is consistent with requirements of the Israelite priesthood of the OT.  One of the laws governing priests who enter the most holy of the temple was that they have their hair cropped.  Paul repeated that requirement for Christians in the book of Corinthians.  Consequently, Phil is in direct violation of this requirement. 

So, which is it Phil?  Are you going to cherry pick and obey the things that are convenient or follow the book to the letter?  Peronally I don't hunt ducks, don't live in the south and I take a skeptical approach to religion so the show does not resonate with me.  If I was seeking guidance in my life I would not consult some old bigotted redneck that cherry picks scripture to his liking and looks like the north end of a south bound horse.  wink

Not the case.   There are no "hair requirements" from the OT that have been carried over to the NT, because the old law died with Jesus.   If that was the case, then we'd need to be circumsized too since Paul clearly had that done to Timothy didn't he?  Corinth was a Greek church with Jewish members.  Should they follow the Jewish customs about head coverings or the less stringent Greek customs?  The women praying with heads uncovered was a more direct violation of the Jewish custom as it put them in a position of not being in subjection to men.  This is what is covered in the first few verses of that chapter, and of course that entire issue is another one that modern day liberals would scream about.  Everything has to be considered in context. 

 

Beyond that, no specific hair length is mentioned as being right or wrong with regard to being shameful.  "Long" is a very generic term of course.   Lastly, the apostle Paul himself most likely had long hair the last time the Corinthians had seen him.   Acts 18 mentions him shaving his head prior to leaving Corinth because of a vow he had taken.   Most likely he had long hair, just like John the Baptist, and just like Phil!

I don't think it was Liberals who signed his walking papers, it would have been his employer. I see the problem being with A&E not just saying, this isn't the networks beliefs or opinions but it is this families and we respect there freedom to have their own religion and beliefs. If some viewers disagreed they could stop watching the show, though I doubt they would have lost many viewers. I don't see how it was a big surprise that he would have this opinion, the family are devout christians.

The shaving of the head when making a vow was customary and did not indicate the length of one's hair. 


True, scripture teaches that Jesus' sacrifice put an end to the law.  Also true that Paul repeats prohibitions from the law to the Corinthians such as the prohibitions on long hair as well as that little tidbit that Phil stated in his rant to GQ.  My question is if the reasoning regarding his counsel can be disregarded about one thing why not all of the things he stated at Corinth? 

Even though no specific hair length is mentioned I don't think anyone would argue that Phil's would qualify as long.

I'm not a fan of Duck Dynasty or religion, the most divisive force the world has ever known, so I'm simply pointing out the inconsistencies in bible interpretation.

In many cases the vows were from a very young age and many years in length.  If Paul's vow were even a year in length, then his hair probably would have as long as Phil's.  Had it been from before his converion?  Maybe or maybe not, but if that were the case then the hair would have been very long.   Not that this is something we'd ever know for sure.  I do agree that most people, myself included, would consider Phil's hair as long.    Set Phil in a barber chair and let's start cutting it shorter an inch at a time.   Let's open the Bible to the verse where it specifies the length where Phil's hair suddenly becomes not shameful.  Of course you can't do that, because it isn't in there.   I Cor. 11 is not about specific hair lengths, it's about the Greeks not offending the Jews with their customs.    If Corinth had been an entirely Greek church, then there would not have been any need to even bring it up.
