santa maria speedway has failed to pay the ura for the last sprint car race at that track . ruben has made several excuses as to why and when he would pay for this race . ruben claimed that a low car count was the reason he could not pay , and he said there were not enough fans in the stands . first , fans in the stands are the responsibility of the promoter . secondly , i believe there were 18 or 19 sprint cars, ruben was expecting a minium of 24 . we as racers know the back gate is where the purse comes from , unless the money is sponsored . this means ruben had well over 1/2 of the money owed to ura at that point , but failed to pay any of it . when i spoke to ruben he told me the money would be paid after his next event if it went well .he told me  to call him back in a week , when i called back he would not take my call or return a call . i do know some of you will be mad i posted this ,  WE ALL MUST DO WHATS RIGHT TO KEEP THIS GREAT SPORT OF OURS MOVING FORWARD !

I agree with you bentaxle. ,, This is a sad. ,,,, but needs to be aired ,,,,, If nothing goes unsaid than no one will know anything about anything gone wrong !!!!!!! .   this whole thing was like a catch 22. ,,,, along with a ballance act on trying to have two tracks along with the newly formed  URA.  This got stretched  way to far with out enough $$$$$- MONEY  $$$$ to go around. ,,,, To much ...... To fast.   I really liked Victor ville and the orange show and what the URA was trying to accomplish . ,,, [ great concept ] .    But for now the Damage has been done. With the economy the way it is. ,,,just hopping that all the rest of the tracks can hang in there until the economy  can come back.   and save the sport that we all love. ,,,, 410 sprint car racing. ,,,,,, And as far as Santa Maria and rubin goes. ,,,, Maybe something will work out down the road for all those concered. ,,,,,,   ZZ.  ,,,,,,,, STAY THIRSTY MY FRIENDS.

i did not want to air this out here . unfortunately as time moves on complaincy sets in . if this goes over once it can happen again . with this issue there has been some talk , and no action . there are some racers and owners that are very unhappy over this . putting forth an effort to resolve the proiblem is all i ask . i love racing at SMS , but wont go back until this is taken care of . there are others that feel the same . promoting is not an easy job , extremely difficult as far as i know , i have a tremendious amount of respect fot promoters , but it goes two ways , without the racer the promoter has no race to promote . our 410 non wing racing here in so-cal is not what you could call healthy at the moment . everyone needs to work together to do whatever it takes to keep 410 non-wing racing  alive !

Very much support you in this... and hope others will sign on here, as well. Promoters' problems should not become the drivers' and owners' problems. Raising prices at the back gate is one thing, because everyone knows about it and can make the choice to play or not. But SM is -- or was -- a long tow for a lot of people who had no way of knowing ahead of time that they were going to get stiffed.

Who was the promoter  (and/or responsible to pay the purse)  URA or Santa Maria Speedway.  Always liked SMS, but  I do not want to support a track that does not pay their purse.

Kinda like when USAC did not pay Tony Jones/car owner their full point fund money.  Did Tony ever get his $?

I'm sorry but it's the responsibility of the series to pay the racers even if they don't get paid. They showed up to run there series. We had 11 midgets and still got are money.

As an avid sprint car fan who lives at the central coast, I was very pleased with the URA show at SMS. I to had noticed sparce fans in bleachers. Its my opinion that the PROMOTER should be accountable for his agreement .

Been making only sprint shows at SMS now for last several years. Will be disapointed if URA is not back to SMS. As a fan I'm sadend by this kind of news. I hope Rubin will fulfill his agrement with URA.

Also, seems to me I made a winged 360 show that never was on schedual that had 6 or 8 cars AND paid $3000.00 to win. Did Bud K. get paid ?

Peace, Out.

Big difference in the payout for the midgets and sprint cars, you guys race for 1,000 to 1,200 to win not 2,500 to win. The total midget purse is probably close to half of the sprints total purse. So more than likely the back gate made enough money to be able to pay your guys purse.

Understood but that wasn't really the point of my post. The series in responsible for paying the racers. Imo

you are 100% right Ronnie ,  that responsibility lands on the series . then we go 1 step further and the track promoter has a responsibility to fulfill his contract with the series , as in this case . even USAC wont pay its racers untill they have been paid by the track .

At the end of this particular night, I personally asked about payout from all concerned parties and was told that checks would be sent in the mail from the track.

Agree.  The sanctioning body is responsible for paying the drivers.  In this case, the Promoter (SMS) had a contractual agreement to pay the purses & salaries to the sanctioning body (URA).  The Promoter took in all the money at the back and front gates and per the agreement was obligated to pay the contracted amount to the sanctioning body immediately following the races.  That never happened.  Since the sanctioning body cannot afford to write checks to cover the debt to the racers, they are done indefintely and their credibility is permanently damaged beyond repair.  Hence the proverbial checkered flag has fallen on the series before completion of it's Inaugural Season.  Sad.

To be clear, URA folded because SMS did not fulfill their contract with URA for the races at Santa Maria?  I will wonder if URA had concentrated on just one track, Victorville or OSS (with a proper dirt track, not just adding some dirt (pretty sure everyone did the best they could with the budget constraints.

I had high hopes for URA and will miss them.  What will happen to Orange Show Speedway and Victorville.

I won't hold my breath, but I sure hope PAS and Ventura add some 410 races next year.

there is now talk of oss going back to pavement next year ...  regardless of the quality of dirt on that track , it was a great place to race sprintcars .
