Knoxville Nationals qualifying format unfair
By Shawn Miller (Knoxville, IA) — To be blunt, the qualifying aspect for the Knoxville Nationals sucks. The format is unfair and it puts too much of an emphasis on arguably the most boring part of any race. However, this isn’t a column about whether or not qualifying should be a part of the sport. Rather, I want to focus on why the qualifying system should be adapted, especially during the premier event of the season with a check for $150,000 on the line.
For the rest of Shawn Millers column visit RacinBoys.

Without even reading it I'll say Shawn Miller is flat out wrong.
The ONLY thing wrong with the qualifying night format is that they no longer invert the ENTIRE heat race.

I have always liked the format. It makes for great racing and the "big dogs" don't always start up front. They used the total invert when they had like 60+ cars each night. The ones that timed from 50 on back had to run a last chance race to tag the back of the C. With only about 50 cars each night you don't want the 10 slowest cars in qualifing on the front rows of the heats. I can understand that. If the car count is there and they can run a last chance race for the slowest 10-15 cars they would have a total invert.

RacinBoys had a better site when it was free. They sure messed up THEIR site when they changed it. Maybe they will blame that on Terry McCarl, when RacinBoys changed their site it was a big mistake.

The only thing unfair about the nationals is allowing Donny Schatz to compete. Oh, and the provisional, or whatever it's called, from some race that you had to race somewhere else to be even be eligible for. How did they decide on an invert of 14 cars anyway? That made as much difference and anything. Invert any other number and someone else would probably have been in.

Every year someone says the format is unfair or should be changed. This is the best format in sprint car racing. One day they are going to change it because the right person complained enough and then it will not be the same. Don't fix something that isn't broke.

Yes, these criticisms are hard to take seriously, considering how successful the whole thing is. They did a good job tweaking Friday night, now let's give the track some credit. Grandstand was packed!

The Lonnie Wheatley and Shawn Miller columns and the videos are the only things we charge for. Lonnie and Shawn are paid for their services. Kirk and I have nearly work for free the last 10 years to bring you everything on RacinBoys.com. If we didn't start charging for something soon we could have been looking at no RacinBoys in the future. I've spent my personal life savings to to keep RacinBoys up and running for the last 10 years, that money would have ran out eventually. I'm not rich, just a working man trying to make a small income doing what I love to do...covering motorsports and bringing it to the fans!

The Nationals are the best..... Very hard but who says the National Championship should be easy..... Who cares if Shawn Miller doesn't like it..... Every night had good hard racing, every night had drama, everynight had surprises both in drivers that did better than expected and drivers who did worse than expected... At least this year Donnie gave everyone a chance to beat him, even though it didn't matter..... If you weren't there, you missed a great show and it even had great weather..... Lots of other fun things to do while there also....... Five Stars!

If Shawn Miller does not like the Nationals format the he should just stay home. And why would I pay to read one persons opinion that is no more important or right/wrong than any one elses?

Did the format yield the best 25 cars? Probably. Did it produce passing? The winner started 21st. No system is perfect but this one seems pretty good.

Sadly, the only 2 things I want to read on there are this article and Wheatleys open wheel rankings. I'll pay to watch vids (i do on jackslash and the cushion) but I'm not paying to read a few articles.

Hummm, I am a reckoning Shawn's clients didn't fare too well? I reckon an ASCS pill draw would have been more fair for the biggest race of the year.
