Excitement Building for 31st Annual Sunoco North/South 100 - Presented by Lucas Oil

WAYCROSS, GA (August 5, 2013) – The excitement and anticipation is building for one of the premier crown jewel events in all of dirt late model racing, the “Sunoco North/South 100 - Presented by Lucas Oil”. This mega three-day event will once again be sanctioned by the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and will be held at Florence Speedway in Union, KY on August 8, 9, 10th. Fans will get to enjoy numerous activities over the course of this mega event, with camping, post-race parties, huge midway full of T-Shirt vendors, prize give aways, autograph session, National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame induction ceremony and the stars and cars of the LOLMDS thrilling the crowd with exciting racing action!

Activity will get underway on Thursday night, August 8th with an open practice session starting at 5 PM. Friday, August 9th activities will include: LOLMDS Hot-Laps, RED BUCK Time Trials and the RED BUCK Fast Dash. Modifieds and Pure Stocks will run as support classes on Friday night. Following Friday night’s events, there will be a fan/racer appreciation party at the track. Then on Saturday  August 10th activities will include: a driver autograph session, National Dirt late Model hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, LOLMDS Heat Races, B-Mains, and the 100-lap feature event. A $1,000 to win modified feature will be the support class on Saturday following the main event. This year’s 31st Annual Sunoco North/South 100 - Presented by Lucas Oil will pay $50,000 to win and $2,500 to start the feature event.

Sunoco Race Fuels will once again sponsor this year’s North/South 100 - Presented by Lucas Oil. Sunoco is the “Official Fuel” of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and is the largest manufacturer of racing gasoline in the world. Sunoco Race Fuels are designed to meet the quality and consistency needs of professional racers. In addition, Sunoco is involved with numerous racing sanctioning bodies, tracks and competitors to provide the latest in race gas technology. Sunoco's track-proven fuels are designed to provide exceptional performance, quality and consistency keeping you "Ahead of the Pack". To obtain more information, contact Sunoco at 1-800-RACE GAS (1-800-722-3427) or visit their web site at www.racegas.com.

“Were thrilled to have Sunoco return as the title sponsor of the North/South 100, along with support from Lucas Oil Products.  All the fine folks at Sunoco and Bazell Fuels have been great to work with in supporting this crown jewel event.  We always look forward to coming to this event every year and having them as our special guest, along with visiting with so many great and loyal fans from that area. We’re excited to work with the King family and the entire staff at Florence Speedway as well and hope to see everyone at Florence Speedway next weekend”, stated Ritchie Lewis, Director, Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series.

In the previous 30 North/South 100 events, there have been 19 different drivers to hoist the winner’s trophy in victory lane.  Current LOLMDS champion Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN and the late Hall of Fame driver; Jack Boggs of Grayson, KY are the only two drivers who have etched their names in the record books as three-time winners of the North/South 100.

There have been six drivers to win the North/South 100 twice. Longtime Florence Speedway racer Pat Patrick of Saylor Park, OH won the first two North/South 100 events, while Jeff Purvis of Clarksville, TN, Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN, John Gill of Mitchell, IN, Donnie Moran of Dresden, OH, and Steve Shaver of Vienna, WV all have collected two coveted North/South 100 trophies.

The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series heads to Florence Speedway with a very tight battle for the series points championship.  The 2-time and reigning series champion, Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN has a mere 20-point lead over Ashland, KY’s, Steve Francis. Francis will be seeking his first win in this prestigious event which is the largest paying dirt late model race in his home-state.  John Blankenship of Williamson, WV, is third in the series standings followed by the 2012 and defending North/South 100 winner, Don O’Neal of Martinsville, IN, and 4-time series champion, Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, FL. Not only will the stars of the LOLMDS have to battle a stout field of national and regional drivers from all over the country, but the talented and tough Florence Speedway local drivers will be looking to defend their home turf as well. This year’s event is shaping up to be one of the strongest North/South 100 fields ever.
