MECHANISBURG: Fred Rahmer isn't your typical Sprint Car driver. They don't make guys like this anymore.

Hard-nosed. No excuses. Rahmer's career is cut from a gritty cloth. Hard work and desire is how he has earned his stripes.

Rahmer has done it his way.

That's how he is handling his planned retirement at the end of the season, an announcement that slipped out publicly this week. In typical Rahmer fashion, he doesn't want a big fuss made over him hanging up his helmet.

“It isn't a big deal,” Rahmer said. “I had enough. The last two years running for CJB Motorsports was no fun.

“I came back this year to prove a point. I can still win and run as good as anybody. I'm not going out on their terms, I'm going out on my terms.

“I had no desire for this. They didn't throw a party for me when I came in, and they sure as hell don't need one when I leave. All I wanted to do was race until the last race and go away and say nothing.”

Rahmer, a member of the Sprint Car Hall of Fame, didn't indicate when he made his decision. But you could sense that it came before the start of the 2013 season.

Since then, the Salfordville driver has racked up 42 straight top 10 runs in the Northeast. He also has 28 top fives and four wins in his first and what appears to be his only year with Rob Sell Motorsports.

“When it rains out and you don't care, that's a good indication,” Rahmer said. “I was very lucky to drive for good people. I always appreciated what everybody has done for me.”

Rahmer's made the most of every car and every lap he has raced.

He owns over 400 wins and 25 track championships. Rahmer's beaten the World of Outlaws and won at just about every track he's competed at since entering the division in 1986.

Some of his big wins include a pair of preliminary tallies during the prestigious Knoxville Nationals, four Tuscarora 50 wins at Port Royal, five Selinsgrove National Open scores, 30 Pennsylvania Speed Week victories and a record 13 Speed Week titles.

Rahmer also has a record 88 wins at Williams Grove Speedway and leads the all-time win list at Lincoln Speedway with 168.

But if you are expecting Rahmer to bask in the glow of his career, don't. He didn't expect this much success and maintains his old-school approach as his career nears the end.

“Never,” Rahmer said. “No way. No how. It took a long time. I had help from guys like Steve Siegel and Paul Lotier when I came in.

“A lot of guys have helped me. I just never gave up, and that's what I'm trying to teach my boys. I never quit and that has paid off.”

Yeah, I don't think copying the story is what the writer wanted. He made it quite easy to access it by directly linking it. This is taking away ad revenue from web hits, which will lead to no content period or a paywall going up. Not cool.

Hopefully, people continue to click on the link. The good part is that we have a ton of motorsports coverage at pennlive.com/motorsports/. Also, we have the updated charts with all the results and finishes by drivers at Central PA speedways. They are divided into weeks.

BINGO!!!!  That's exactly why I copied it.  Do you think it is free for this message board?  Why should someone else be able to post link after link on this page that someone else has to pay for and direct people away from it?  Over the past couple weeks this guy has cluttered up hoseheads message board for his own personal gain.  Don't get me wrong, he has some great stories and are very informative.  I just think he is abusing the system over here at hoseheads to his own personal gain.  Heck, you even pointed it out yourself sprintfan16.  Im not going to argue about it.  You have your opinion and I have mine.  It's just kind of a cheap way of doing business if you ask me.

That's a whole other debate - there's several places that shill their products here and it's seemingly accepted. If you're going to get on your soap box, you should at least do it against one of those who rarely has good sprint car content (LuvRacin.com as the main offender). Irregardless, it's not your decision to make - that's the site owner's and given that the posts are not deleted, it seems that the site owner is fine with these posts. You've failed to make any point with any substance and have only accomplished unauthorized reproductive of copywritten works. Congratulations!

And by the way, I would usually leave stuff like this be because most posters are too stupid to understand any logic to why what they've done is wrong, but I want to say that this guy actually produces good content week in and week out. Much better than most of the "press releases" that are littered with grammatical errors and bad writing in general. Keep up the good work gators. Hopefully acts like this won't deter you from pounding out informative and concise content.

I appreciate the support for the stories. For the record, The Patriot-News/Pennlive.com has no intention of putting up a pay wall. It's not in our current business model. My purpose for posting stories is to simply get them out there to readers. No hidden agenda. We have upped our racing coverage, covering Central PA, traveling to Eldora and Lernerville. The newspaper is also sending me to Knoxville for the Nationals, and we will be producing close to 20 stories from the event. My hope is that people continue to read and enjoy the stories.

By the way, this website has to get hits in order for my stories to get hits. It's a two way street and benefits both.

Interesting that in a post about one of the all-time greats in sprint car racing retiring, we have successfully turned this post into a debate about something other than the original topic.

I watched Fred Rahmer run modifieds a few times at Grandview and have watched him a few times in his sprint car career.  And, I have talked to Fred in the pits and on Winged Nation a few times as well.  He has been maybe the most straight-up guy I have talked to and is one of our all-time favorite guests on our show.

An amazing career, those numbers are so impressive and I think this is going to be fun to see what he is doing in a year's time with a couple of kids climbing the racing ladder.

You're doing a great job Jeremy!!!  If I reference anything you've written or it's PennLive, it will only be the link!!  Actually, it will only be the link regardless of the website.

Fast Freddie's record speaks for itself.  What a career he has had.  I can only hope the people in Posse land are really aware of what he has accomplished in his racing career.
