Tulsa
Oklahoma (August 28, 2012) – Labor Day Weekend is upon us and for many, the
last summer holiday is a time to enjoy the warmth of the outdoors prior to the
cooler months ahead. Auto racing has a long history of offering excellent
holiday entertainment to the summer enthusiasts. Saturday night will see the
wild n’ wicked Oil
Capital Racing Series sprint cars make their second 2012 appearance to
the Caney Valley Speedway located
in Caney Kansas as the season long chase for the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. / OCRS Championship rolls onward.
Promoter Kerry Gorby has built CVS into a fan favorite destination for
exciting, close side-by-side racing action on his quaint ¼ mile oval just
minuets north of the Kansas/Oklahoma state line. Gorby had a standing room only
house when OCRS last came to town during the Memorial Day holiday weekend. All
signs point to another full house for the OCRS sprint cars this round as well
as race fans are enamored over how the open wheel machines run so close
together at the speeds these tubular rocket ships produce. CVS will also have
the CVS DIRTcar Super Late Models, USRA B-Mods and Factory Stocks on the
program also.
Whit
“Gasman” Gastineau was the victor last May at CVS. He also provided himself his
own present as it was also his birthday. The Gasman comes into the event with
two wins on the OCRS 2012 tour having also won in Monett Missouri in June.
Defending victory lane at CVS will be a challenge for Gastineau. Danny Smith
will be just one of several drivers looking to keep Gastineau at bay. Like
Gastineau, Smith is also a dual winner in 2012 with one of those coming last
Saturday night in a thrilling finish with OCRS points leader, Jamie Passmore.
Passmore has the lion’s share of feature wins in 2012 with ten victory lane
appearances. Smith halted Jammin Jamie’s win streak at five with his recent
win. 149 points separate these two combatants in the points chase.
While
the race for the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. / OCRS Championship has
seemingly come down to a two horse race, there are other battles of interest
among the top ten. The always competitively driven Fred Mattox of Drumright
Oklahoma holds a slim 34-point lead over Gastineau for the third spot in the
standings. Maddox’s best finish in points was sixth in 2010 while Gastineau was
last years runner-up. Positions 4-8 are log jammed with only 57 markers separating
all of them. Tim Kent holds the fourth seat while 2012 Brodix / PM-PRO rookie
of the year point leader Alex Sewell sits a single digit behind Kent with Casey
Wills and Johnny “Hotrod” Kent in tow. Shayla Waddell & Kyle Clark round
out the top ten.

The Oil Medics “Back Row
Challenge” is up for grabs. The added bonus by the gracious folks at the Oil
Medics remains at $2,000 for the ‘Pole Dash’ winner to accept a back row start
and win from deep in the hole. Harli White won the dash last Saturday and the
charming lady from Lindsay Oklahoma took a rain check on the challenge in lieu
of trying to earn her first OCRS main event win. It looked as though she would
run a remarkable third only to spin very late in the race. White still managed
a very respectable 7th. Not shabby for her first season in sprint
cars. What about CVS? With the right track conditions, could the Oil Medics
Back Row Challenge possibly be taken on at “Gorby’s Joint”?
PIT NOTES
Hustling For Cash: Last
week we reported the AmeriFlex
Hose and Accessories “Hard Charger” award had been claimed by 12
different drivers in 14 events. Now make that 13 out of 15 as “Lightning” Layne
Himebaugh became the newest recipient last week at the Southern Oklahoma Speedway.
Himebaugh started 16th and finished 6th. He was one of
three drivers to improve 10 spots and was awarded the $100 bill for being the
highest finisher of those three? Will we see number 14 at CVS?
New Drivers Take a Spin: Last week saw
two new drivers compete for the first time in OCRS competition. Derek Cottrell
of Fletcher Oklahoma brought his #9 XXX chassis with backing from Patco
Electrical Services and Thriller Photography out for a spin. Cottrell has
previous sprint car experience and it showed with a top ten finish (8th)
right away.
Amarillo Texas shoe Morgan Dowdy also dropped in on OCRS last week. He
wheels the #6d sprint car that was driven earlier this season by Will Scribner,
stepson to Alan Lemmons who owned the Maxim car. Dowdy is in his first year of
sprint car racing having raced in micros previously. He ran 18th in
his first OCRS start. His racing efforts are supported by Impulse Photo and
Greens Machinery.
Better temps= Better Wear: Between the
improved track conditions at SOS last week and the cooler temps, OCRS teams
were greatly pleased at the condition of their tires after the main event.
Record setting heat for the past two summers have taken its toll on tire wear
of all makes in racing all around the mid-west. To see the heat finally break
has been a huge blessing for the teams and their sometimes “breakable wallets”.
He Just Wont Stay Away: As has been the
norm in 2012, Hall of Fame sprint car star (and successful promoter) Shane
Carson was at the SOS event Saturday night to wheel the Bob Hurley Auto Family
2012 Ford pace truck. Carson has multiple destinations from which to choose
from on race nights and the OCRS series is humbled to have Carson attend most
of the OCRS races on the schedule. There are rumors that series promoter Barry Grable
hooks up a laptop to the Hurley Ford’s computer checking for its RPM’s turned
throughout the night. Grabel can relax as we haven’t seen the Hurley pace truck
lift its left front wheel (yet).
