Don't mean to pick, but the Johnny Thomson photo can't be 1963.....no roll bar. Besides, he died at Allentown 9/24/60. Should be about '56 to '58 sometime...he was '58 Eastern sprint champion in USAC.

I always thought Pikes Peak was amazing ...

Road machinery completing its job on the Pike's Peak summit in the summer of 1916.
Ray Lentz in his homemade speedster powered by a 402ci, 125 HP V-8 Curtis airplane engine. He won event 3 in 1916 with a time of 20:55.6.
Labor Day 1920, winners of the second annual Pike's Peak Hill Climb. Otto (OT) Loesche was the champion with the best time of the day. Al Cline had the 2nd best time, 22:30.8. No races were held in 1917, 1918 and 1919 due to WWI.
Noel Bullock showed up at Pike's Peak in 1922 with his Ford Special with a 179ci, OHV, 50hp engine. Noel was practically laughed off with hill when he showed up at the 1922 event with a home built car. Because the car looked so poor people called it the "Tin Lizzy." Noel surprised everyone by winning the race despite little practice and no time trial run. He even hand painted the #24 at the start when another racer commented that he needed a number. Noel Bullock shocked everyone with a 19:50.9 winning finish.
Louis Unser attacking the mountain in his Shultz Stutz Special in 1934 on his way to a win and a new course record of 16:01.8. Unser (Bobby's Uncle) finished his career with nine titles overall.

The most spectacular crash ever is considered to be Slim Roberts' in 1962. He was on the switchbacks at the Devil's Playground, above the timberline, when his Conze-Offy Special went over and tumbled several hundred feet down the rocks. Roberts was taken to a Colorado Springs hospital. He wasn't there long, leaving when no one was looking. X-rays showed he had been injured seriously with a broken neck. He was tracked down at a local bar, knocking back drinks.
Al Unser in either 1960 or 1961.
Bobby Unser at the start in his Chevrolet open wheel car in 1963. He won the race with a time of 12:30.6. Bobby eventually won 7 times in this car and finished his career with 13 Hill Climb victories overall. The starter is Al Rogers who won the open wheel division 5 times in the 1940's and 1950's.
Mario Andretti on his way up the Hill in 1968 in his Ford Special. He finished fourth with a time of 12:53.29. He won in 1969.
Ted Foltz near a snow bank at Devil's Playground in 1979.
