Please don't just believe me! I called the Federal & State D.O.T. and played dumb, asked the questions and was told if I was compensated in any way, it was a commercial vehicle and needed to follow ALL the laws of commercial trucking. Period. They said distance, GVW, amount of prize money made no difference at all. She said I could call it a hobby until the cows came home, they call it a business. The nice lady stated that some states are more vigorous with enforcement, but they were going to crack down everywhere soon due to some high profile accidents with large trucks/trailers being used for commercial purposes (by THEIR definition) that weren't D.O.T. compliant. Again, I think it depends on who you run into and how long your luck will last! Out West, the State of California has been less than hospitable to racers.

I believe it is 119 (+) gals for hazmat (liquid) & some containers even need that because of residue last contained (empty). Some day according to the tester up in Findlay (Oh.) it will be the same across the board since it is Federal. You damn near have to be a New York lawyer to figure some of the shit out.

A few folks have mentioned this at it seems to get overlooked.

The GVW of your truck/trailer is irrelevant if you are racing for money. The minute you admit (or they can prove) you race for cash/prizes it’s a “Commercial Vehicle” subject to all the rules and laws of an over the road driver (Haz-Mat placards, flares, secured load, etc). That’s right, an F-150 with an open trailer can get pulled over, inspected and the driver needs a CDL, medical card, log book, etc. THAT is the letter of the law. I know Indiana & Pennsylvania have seen these DOT traps set up outside of tracks and have stopped EVERY vehicle carrying a race car. I sold my Toter-home upon advice of my attorney since there was no way we could afford to CDL the crew, pay the highway taxes, stop at the scales, and generally keep up with the paperwork to stay legal. I’m hoping to sneak by with a dually & gooseneck and play dumb. Either that or tell them it’s a exhibition/show car and we don’t race for money! J

Or if you don't win, is that racing for money?

D1RT, Yes you would have to have Haz Mat. I'm sure that would be a hefty fine. Not racing related but you have to have tanker endorsement if hauling x-amount gal tanks.

With all the 360's in town was anyone pulled over? I would think the board would be lit up about it if a few were.

I tell it like I see it.
