Well I've been a long time lurker but never posted until now. I've seen a few threads before on this but never witnessed it until this weekend. I've been going to races for 20+ years and and am starting to get my son interested in going. We were at I-96 this past weekend as we only see the Outlaws up here 1 time a year but try to get out of state as much as possible to watch them run. My son wanted a Schatz shirt so I got him one and he wondered about having it signed so I told him after the race we would take it to him. After the race we went down to His hauler and waited for Schatz to appear and my wife took him by where he was standing and asked him if he would sign our sons shirt. Well he signed the shirt without acknowledging my son or wife then just walked away. Now keep in mind this was after the race as I explained to my son that this is a job for these guys and we didn't want to bother them before the race. So this was after the race Donny was out of his fire suit and out of his hauler. To me that's just a guy being a jerk. Not to many things are worse than when you get to see that look of disappointment on a kids face when they wanna meet there hero and they turn out to be a jerk.

I think its been well documented through the years that Donny isn't the most personable racer at the track. I've never been a big Donny fan myself but the more people that I meet that know him on a personal level do say good things about him, but that he is just a shy quiet person to begin with, so add that on top of at the track he is all about his racing, prior to the race he is thinking about it and afterwards, unless he won he is likely thinking about what he did wrong and beating himself up for not winning. Its too bad it happened that way but he did sign the shirt the way it sounds, he could have just flat out said no and walked away.

Just, how do you respond to your kid when he ask, "Hey Dad, buy me a Sammy Swindell shirt?'

You say "Way to go Son!" and buy him one.

And posting this on here will do what?

I think that by posting it here, he was hoping that maybe some of the sprint car racers out there would read it and take it to heart. And, maybe next time they will take the 5 seconds it takes to make a fan for life. Instead what did Schatz get? Probably not a fan for life. Hell, the kid may not even take up an interest in racing at all if that is the impression he is going to get from the first driver he meets. I know it is like this in all sports, but common. When are these guys going to wake up and realize that their entire paycheck revolves around the people that fill the seats and tune in the TV. Ask Kurt Busch what being a complete tool in the public eye is doing for his career. I generally tend to not want to meet any professional athlete because I am afraid of the experience and how it will affect my image of them and their sport. And that is too bad!

Truthfully, if you don't want to be in the spotlight and have people watching you and wanting to meet you, don't take up a career doing something that will create that situation. Professional athletes wouldn't have a life doing what they love if people did not sit in the stands and watch them. Every driver out there needs to take a lesson from Mel Kenyon & Jack Hewitt(his performance for the fans at INDY). Especially with children. Most children will hold onto that 30 seconds of "how are you & did you enjoy the race" along with a smile offered by their favorite driver for the rest of their lives. I understand being upset, but if you are, stay in the trailer.

you should check out Jason Johnson. You don't even have to be a fan of his and him and his number one fan start sending you personally autographed shirts and hats! I wear the shirt every Sunday now!

One time at an NST prerace autograph session a guy handed Steve kinser a cell phone and said "my nephew has cancer can u cheer him up". Steve was taken aback. Took the phone talked to the guy on the other end flashed a grin and kept on signing. I was blown away at his poise. It was an awkward thing the guy did inappropriate for sure but kinser handled it like a champ.
More weight, more regulation, more similarity in the
cars.... that will ensure plenty of thrills for years
to come. Only the most average talent behind the
wheel will be needed with such awesome equipment on
the track!

I would tell my daughter "go buy it yourself" but I can assure the circumstance will not exist during my lifetime.

Donnie has never been very friendly, in fact he seems very cold toward fans. This is not a knock on Donnie, that's just the way he is but part of being a "professional" driver is to interact with the fans, especially before or after the race. It's a part that is missing on Donnie's resume.

Contrast that with Steve, Jason Meyers, Jason Sides, Haud, Blaney and so many others. They all have thier days when they get fed up, but real professionals try to keep those days to an absolute minimum.

I've spoken with Sammy many times before and after the races and he seems to be very quiet. I can see where fans might consider this to be cold.

Love him or hate him, you better enjoy Sammy while you can as father time is catching up with him.

No one with his demeanor would last if they to climb the ranks without guaranteed funding (his family before TSR). You have to know how to talk/meet with sponsors and fans to represent your sponsors. As a marketing person, I would never associate my brand/company with him because of how he comes off to fans. He is a VERY TALENTED driver and I respect his abilities. I simply never consider having any marketing opportunities with him, or buy a t-shirt. He doesn't need my money anyway.

i use to be a fan and spend a lot of $ on his stuff before i had about 3 races like this. the 1st time i just figured bad night. they all have them. the 3rd time i said piss on it. i will support someone else. Donny is 1 hell of a sprint car driver but his down fall is people skills. He has even admitted to it in an interview once. he will continue to be that way i imagine but people will still support him. These guys cant please everyone.

Funny you say that. Ive been a fan of sammy's for a long time and ive never had a problem walking up to him and talking to him. Amy also was really nice to my wife while they where in the trailer talking.

I think some people expect more out of others. There regular people who happened to have awesome jobs for a living. Yes maybe he could have made some kind gestures toward your son. Just like in charlotte I watched a bunch of drunk clowns standing near Tony and Donny's pit getting hammered drunk and trying to see Tony. After the races on of these same drunks walks in front of steve when he was trying to pull into his pit and he had to react fast or he would have creamed this dude rolling his big old cooler around the pits. Same dude about got knocked out by tony as he was in his face while tony was talking to the crew guys about the cars. Now Kasey Kahn that dude is the coolest walking around the pit like its no big deal saying excuse me as he passed us five times as we where watching them rebuild Cody's car. Didn't even have his pit ropped off..

I just think some nights are better then other. Long hot days, and a night in a race car. If you have ever raced you know what its like right after words when your still all pumped up and just want to relax.

Obviously I wasnt there and cant comment about specifics. Regardless, this type of deal is not common in the dirt racing world. Most if not all of the time, I have been treated very well by the drivers as long as I was respectful of them with regard to when I asked for an autograph or asked to buy a shirt etc... If the race was over, then Donnie should take thirty seconds and sign the shirt, maybe let them take a picture and say thanks for coming out tonite. Minimal effort is all that would be required in this instance. I have seen drivers be courteous to fans after thay had to winch their car into the back of a trailer after flipping or being involved in a major accident. and doing thousands of dollars of damage to their race cars. Those are the drivers that I will support. I know that Donnie and Sammy probably dont want/need additional sponsors but you never know when that fan that comes to your trailer might be someone that could provide some much needed sponsorship or support in a time where sponsorships are few and far between. I would imagine that many sponsors start off as fans and then decide they want to get financially involved to help their favorite team or driver. Donnie and Sammy are great drivers and their records speak for themselves. However, when they act like they couldnt care less about fans, especially kids, it impacts negatively on the sport that they rely on to make a living for their families, and ultimately will impact their bottom line as well.

Definitely not the first post on this subject and definitely wont be the last! Ive heard of countless times when fathers would buy their kids a Donny Schatz shirt, go to have him sign it, and he acts colder than a day in Schatz's hometown of Fargo North Dakota in mid January! IMO, hes just an absolute asshole...a talented asshole but an asshole nontheless! He has never been fan friendly and never will be. Same goes with Sammy Swindell. They are both two peas in a pod. I just never understood how you could treat your fans like that. Now, if you are looking for really nice guys who will sign autographs until dawn, go visit Paul McMahan and Joey Saldana. Those guys realize its the fans who pay their bills!
