Help. Went I first went to a midget race in 1964 at Spencer Iowa the drivers operated a bar (or handle) outside of the left side of the cockpit. What was this for.

That would be a manual fuel pump!

If it was a bar it was probably a hand brake. If it was a small pump located on the cowling it was a pump to pressureize the fuel tank.

Interesting info on autoracingmemories.com All kinds of levers to keep the driver busy and fool the guy behind him! Check it out, weight jackers, brakes, kill switches, hand throttle,fuel pump.
