Top 16 on points from Wed & Thurs go through to Saturday's A.
All the rest return Friday night, qualify again and go into 7 heats with the top 4 from Friday's A taking positions 17, 18, 19 & 20 in the big one. Plus the World Challenge.
The remaining 4 for Sat night come out of the B as per usual.
As announced by Knoxville's Toby Kruse on Speed Australia yesterday during his trip down under.

I think this change is dissapointing. The thing that I like most about the nationals was how tough the qualifiying nights were. They allow no screw ups, this new format will allow you to bury yourself on Wednesday or Thursday, and then have Friday to have the chance to make up those spots you lost. At least before the best you could do was start 11th on Saturday, now with luck you be all the way back up to 17th in the A. In my opinion this will screw the little guys out of showing up, before if they had a decent qualifing night they could sneek into the top 40 in points (which would get them into the B main) and havee a nice little payday and think how close they came to making the show. I typically like change, but this one, I'm not sure about. Why change a system that has been working for years?
I wish we could have the non qualifers night from a few years back with 5 heats and features then the scrambles and world challenge.

GREAT CHANGE!!! Should keep more cars in town giving them a chance to make up for problems encountered in prelim nights... Locking in top 8 from each night is plenty...Tough place to come to once a year, or for the first time, so giving drivers more chances to figure out the place and improve will only help them be more competitive....This format should help the overall car count as well....Most importantly this change gives the FANS more bang for their buck......

I like it.
So 5th in the feature Friday starts on the pole of the B Saturday and so on?
Will definitly keep more cars in town and I like it better than the semi-feature junk they've been running the past few years.

That is a lot of qualifying to sit thru. 50 on Wed, 50 on Thurs, and at least 80 on Friday. I know the die-hard fan won't mind, but the casual fan like my wife sure will.

I love this idea. Finally Friday will have some significance. We will no doubt see some big names racing for something meaningful now, as opposed to those exhibition races they've been running on Fridays all theses years. For many racers the week is about making it into the A, and getting that second chance will be huge. For others its an opportunity to race again and make a few bucks, rather then being parked. For the fans, we get a stacked field, racing all out, for a spot in the A main. Good move Knoxville Raceway.

This is a good idea because guys that have a terrible prelim night will have a second chance. I'm especially thinking more for the racers whose preliminary night was bad and it wasn't their fault it was that bad.

How will the rest of the field be lined up on Sat? By accumulated points from qualifying night + points from Fri or simply by finish order Fri. I hope by total points for week. That will still make getting everything you can on Wed/Thur important and keep cars from just parking if they have no chance at top 16. We'd get all out go for it racing every night. That would be the best in my opinion.

Amen brother, couldn't agree with this post more. If the new Knoxville promoter is listening, please read this post from MoOpenwheel.
I personally like the format change for Friday. The days of top teams making an "alphabet soup" run are long gone. This format change gives good teams that had bad luck on the prelim night a second chance to better their position before Saturday. I never really liked that Friday meant little to nothing for Saturday night.

This sounds like a great change, much needed as the Friday night program has been the red headed step child of the whole week. Should provide some very spirited, meaningful racing on Friday night. Tradition is great and all that, I've been going out there since 1991, and have seen very, very few Friday nights worth the cost of admission, so I'm all for this. It will be interesting to see how this night affects the remainder of Saturday night's lineups.

Personnaly, I only see this as a good thing for the Big Teams, it only hurts the little guys in the long run and will result in a LOWER CAR COUNT in years to come.
For Example, if they do not combine your points from your original qualifying night and add Friday to them to determine the line-up, those guys that were "surprises" in the A main on Saturday (starting 17-20), now may end up in the C or D main if Friday goes poorly for them. IMO, this is BAD for the event as a whole, those surprise cars are part of what makes the Nationals so special.
Now, take those low-budget cars and add another night of wear and tear on their equipment, Wed (or Thurs), Friday, and Saturday. Their chances of making $$ that week has diminished quite a bit, as they now have expenses for another night of competition, and it may take a team that was 17th in points (Guaranteed 10 grand on Saturday night), and put them mid-pack in the C or worse on Saturday after competing Friday night (a lot less chance of them getting 10 grand even over the course of both nights of competition).
Is it good for the FANS? Maybe short-term, but in the long run, it will probably mean less cars for both local shows and the Nationals as teams just won't be able to justify the expenses any more.
I do think the format needed changed up some for Friday, but I hope a LOT of thought goes into not just throwing out the results from Wednesday and Thursday. Maybe tell the competitors that Friday is a chance for a "do-over", but they have to give up the points they earned on their qualifying night. The cars 17-25 may opt to not race, but could be beat in points by a car that elected to take the "do-over".
From a fan perspective, we should get more bang for our buck, but this tilts the scales in favor of the Big teams even more, as a guy with bad luck on Wednesday or Thursday (Jason Meyers in 2010) now doesn't even have to attempt the alphabet soup (he was in the C main that year), as he could have a good Friday and start 17th on Saturday, taking a spot from a car that EARNED IT by running good and having good luck on their qualifying night.
