Dang! Great guy, drove my car in the Masters and we had a blast. Visited him at Silver Springs, after the races he put on a huge ugly mask and clowned around with fans. Racing lost a great racer and a great person.

Wow,sorry to hear that. He was one of Central Pa's all time greats and was of the nicest drivers in the pits afterward. He always had time for the fans. RIP Smokey.

Such sad news, I remember reading about him in the early days of Open Wheel.. no, even before that, when Stock Car racing mag was our surrogate Open Wheel in the late 70's. One of the legends of sprint car racing.
I read on a message board that people had seen and spoken to him only days before, did he have a heart attack?

He had one earlier this year and was still ill. He went out on his own terms.
79 years old and still loved racing.
He definitely had a set.
Rest in peace Smokey.

RIP Smoke! I remember Smokey had Port's one-lap track record for YEARS, which I think was 17.56. Don't remember how long it took to break it, but it was a very LONG time. In the Lloyd #56.

Even tho' I live in Texas - I watched him race in Centraly Pennsy - and got to chat with him at Manzanita. What a super person as well as one helluva racer. Always smooth and clean. His death was a real shock. I hope he realized how much he was loved and respected - and how much joy he gave to those of us fortunate enough to watch him race.
RIP Smokey...

I know that it's sad to say goodby to one of our heroes but it is also a time for telling the great stories that were a part of them and their celebrated lives. Smokey had just won one of the major events out west in Arizona and his car owner joined in the joyous group. After watching the trophy girls bestowing the traditional kiss on Smokey he was heard to say "I'D KISS YA,TOO,SMOKE BUT LORD KNOWS WHERE THAT MOUTH HAS BEEN !"
Thank you,Smokey, for all the good times and great racing we enjoyed. .
Bud's Bride
We cannot remember you without a smile.RIP
