just a heads up for the people coming to knoxville or already here, the knoxville p.d. is out in full force stopping everything from golf carts to scooters to people walking down the sidewalks.

It seems odd that there have been two different post about the Iowa/Knoxville cops already and we're not even to the main week of racing... I've gone for 20 years, stayed from Ottumwa to West Des Moines, had my car broken into in Des Moines (to steal the Dale Earnhardt seat cushions, lol), and never really had any issues with the cops. I'm not a big fan of the 5.0s but usually if you're not doing something dumb they seem to leave you alone...

I wish Earl still did Eldora's track prep.

I would have to 2nd that, 20 years for me also and have never had any trouble. Had to get rid of a beer once, but he let me drink it and that was that. I have to miss the natoinals this year, so dealing with the Knoxville PD would be better than keeping up with things on the web!!!! Have a good and safe time all.

As a Knoxville resident, in my opinion, the Knoxville PD patrols Nationals with a very lenient approach. The Marion county sheriffs dept does the same. They know people come for a good time and pretty much let them have one. There are many plain clothes officers around that you wouldn't know unless your a local, but are there for safety more than law enforcement. These 2 groups have done very well to not hassle the race fans, especially since the bad press in the race papers and mags 7-8 years ago. Just accept that if you let your 12 year old loose with the golf cart and they're riding down the sidewalk they will probably get pulled over. Common sense goes a long way. How ever I would be leary of the State Troopers, some times they cause more trouble than they need to. Just my 2 cents.

Nationals is one reason i became a liquor drinker and not a beer drinker. Liquor mixed in pepsi or coke bottles, underage, made it much easier. Once was standing with friends in a circle and they all had beer cans and a cop walked up and asked for all their ID's. Thye all got underage tickets and I just stood there with my Pepsi' in hand.

ive been coming for 10 years and ive had a couple of tickets myself and it was my own fault. my point is that ive only been in town 2 days and every time i walk to the track someone is pulled over. it just seems like they're cracking down this year.

As long as you're not being too dumb you should be fine. I don't know how many times I have forgotten the rules and walked down the street with a beer. If a cop approaches I just start pouring it out before they can say anything, apologize, and BS with them for a while. Most of the law enforcement in Knoxville seem pretty cool in my experience. Remember, they are regular people too, if you make their job easier, and be respectful they tend to appreciate it and will cut you a break.

The same scenario as above happened when I was underage. Since I poured it and was cool about it he let me walk. Your mileage may vary...

A funny story about my experience with Knoxville's finest. As I do most nights I closed down the Dingus a few years back, and I decided to walk across the street to the party in turn 3. Feeling a bit brave I thought I'd stop and talk to one of the officers. We BS'd for a while and I mentioned I was curious what the legal limit was in Iowa. I wanted to be sure I was fine to drive later that night to the other end of town where I was staying. I asked if he'd be ok giving me a breathalizer test. He appreciated me wanting to be safe and gave me the test, he said no problem. I blew a .07 and he sent me on my way, said have a good time and don't drink for the rest of the night if I was going to drive.

Canucklehead, we still remember you walking up to the patrol car at the entrance to the fairgrounds that night and asking for a breath test. More impressive is that you were actually legal to drive. I know I wasn't.

Last year during Nats. I walked out the front gate with a beer in my hand and asked a couple guys sitting on the concrete wall if they knew if I would be in trouble walking down the sidewalk with a beer. They said they would not recomend it. I sat there drinking my beer and talking to these guys for quite awhile. Turned out they were cops dressed in race shirts and shorts. Cool guys but be careful my friends.

Undercover cops at a damn sprint car race?? What the hell has this country become? Nobody is safer with this kind of crap being pulled by law enforcement, nobody. They have them undercover for the purposes of entrapment not public safety. Some of you folks think California has way too strict policies around our racetracks but I can assure you I have never heard of nor seen ANY undercover police at a dirt track race here. Sure you'll see suited up officers at the state controlled fairgrounds tracks but you know who and where they are, undercover is just plain dumb.
Cheers!

^ I have to agree with this. I can't imagine what they need undercover police for at the races. Underage drinking? Pot? The only thing I could think of would be keeping an eye on campgrounds for theft but even then why not just be in uniform?

It's not like the nationals are dangerous. I have never seen a real fight, maybe pushing and shoving, but that's about it. I know there was a stabbing a few years back but I don't see how undercover cops would have prevented that.

The Knoxville finest is out in full force. Saturday night they proceeded to pick up a 4-wheeler and pit crew member for riding on the frontage road in front of Pamida. They had just completed pushing the sprint car into the pits and was heading back to get the truck driver when they were pulled over by Knoxville Gestapo. Received a ticket for "$130" - Operation of ATV on Roadway. The entire time they were getting a ticket wrote up - 5 Golf Carts and other assorted ATV's were driving on the frontage road and Hwy 14.

Pretty sad that the Knoxville Gestapo is running our Sprint Cars out of town. When we don't have anybody showing up because they are such "Pricks" - maybe they will treat us better. If I remember right .... we are generating revenue to pay their wage! Our tax dollars support pay their salaries.

Oh btw ....They sure couldn't get the individual going 95 on Hwy 14 home from the races that passed three vehicles in a no passing zone.

It's a new breed of gunslingers in town. The old guard were all locals and were well aware of the benefits to the town from the Nationals (and weekly races) . Now we need an out of town Police Chief, and most of the city cops are non-locals, that think they are in New York City ! The city cops could use a lesson from the County Sheriff and his posse .
