have a 360 sprintcar-barnes 4 stage-wix filter- synth oil--start engine and have 80 lbs oil--take car to track in racing condition oil pressur droped to 50 lbs-oil pressure screw turned in tight-put a Fram filter on and pressure went to 75 lbs on track-with wix filter oil pressure dropped when warm to 50 lbs every time when warmed up

At what rpm? 10 psi per 1k rpm.

Call your engine builder - he can probably diagnose whatever's going on. Any feedback on here will be a guess, at best. Motors are too expensive to chance a guess....

I agree with some of the other suggestions, I think you should consult an expert.

With that said, you are probably going to lose some pressure when the oil gets hot.

Perhaps Mr Wesmar could respond!?!

8000 rpm--called Barnes they had no answer-did put new gauge in-engine is home built-timed 4 th quick out of 31 cars then this problem started

Have had good luck with Wix and Fram filters. I do know that Fram was having some issues with their filters a few years ago, I assume everything is good now. We have been using K&N filters for the past two years, part number 3002.

Years ago when we did Gary Wrights engines he was having oil pressure issues as well. Long story short he went through 4 gauges one night, finally the fifth one worked! Like azteca said change your gauges.

One last thing I would check is where you loosen the jam nut on the pump and turn the knob to adjust the pressure, back it all the way out. There will be a spring and a little plunger. Clean them real good, even lightly scuffing the plunger with scotch brite. The plunger could be sticking inside the housing giving you false readings. If the pump hasn't been gone through in a few years I would suggest having it rebuilt.

What are your bearing clearances?

Perhaps you should try some Brad Penn 20w50 partial synthetic oil and see what happens. If you haven't had your oil pump checked out during re-builds you are asking for trouble. That would be like going to the doctor for a physical and skip the "listening to your heart" portion.

My opinion - which is probably not worth much - is that you are probably lucky to have 50 psi of oil pressure when hot with synthetics. Also, Ed Wulff is really good and I highly recommend that you take a week off, remove the oil pump and send it to him and have him check it out on his oil pump flow bench. Perhaps a spring change is all you need.

KW also hit the nail on the head - if you have a poppet hanging up in the pump that can cause big trouble too. That can be a common problem with the Barnes pumps when they are brand new.

If you think it is the oil filter, and you are running a remote filter, after warming it up and getting it to the 50psi condition. Shut it off, and bypass the oil filter. Run the pressure line straight into the block. Fire it up and see what you have. If I had to run a filter on the pressure side I would only run a K & N filter as KW posted.

My guess is you have more bearing clearance (to be measured with tools not plastigauge) than your oil pump and oil can keep up with. There is a large debate on how much clearance is too much or too little, but either way you have to keep oil between the bearings and the crank.

Maybe you should change to a partial synthetic oil like Brad Penn 20w50.

Maybe you should get your oil pump looked at.

Perhaps just a spring change in the pump will be all you need.

Maybe your oil pump is wore out.

Either way, I highly recommend you address the issue now before something catastrophic happens!

I have seen this happen before, the gauge can be the problem, then when changed out,the next gauge ,pressure went up 15# then dropped again, changed to another gauge,(3rd one ),and put on new Fram filter, pressure up by 30 pounds, instantly, never dropped then heat built up and engine smoked, the engine pulled, and burnt two bearings and the cause, was found, the Fram filter had come apart, had blocked flow hole, not just one piece several and starved the engine for oil. I hate to say this we went to Wix filter and never had this problem again, maybe it was a freaky thing, until an old Buddy blew his 351 ford burnt up his bearings and his Fram was worse than mine,it literally blew all the filter media apart inside.I don't race anymore and my friend has been sitting for a year building up funds to get engine redone.Ran a Fram for years and still do,on my personal car,but not racing car.Oh yeah,my Buddys car was a drag racing Mustang ,not a circle burner like mine was, just a thought about the problem.
