THE DAUM-INATOR RULES AT THE HAUBSTADT HUT 100

Haubstadt, IN - May 21, 2011. Zach Daum of Pocahontas, IL, was victorious in the 59th running of the Hut 100 which was held at Tri-State Speedway Saturday night. Daum led the final 10 laps in his Daum Insurance/Weld Eagle/Fontana midget. He also led for a period in the race from lap 63 to 77. Throughout the race 3 or 4 drivers stayed in a constant battle for the lead.. The win was Daum’s first in competition with the Mopar USAC National Midgets and he joined an elite list of winners for this event that are heralded as the best in the business.

Fast Qualifier Darren Hagen emerged as a late race threat. The California driver took the lead from Zach Daum on lap 78 and held it for the next 11 laps. But Daum recaptured the lead as the cars emerged from turn two during a restart on lap 90. Tracy Hines took second and Thomas Messeraull moved up to third during the final two circuits of the quarter mile oval. Hines had led the first 62 laps of the feature. Darren Hagen was fourth at the finish with Jerry Coons Jr, finishing fifth.

Thomas Meseraull and Brad Kuhn won the two 10 lap qualifying events to establish the starting order for the last 8 rows of the feature. The top 9 qualifiers were locked into the feature and did not have to run a preliminary event first. USAC Midgets Points leader Bryan Clauson was sixth in the main event. Caleb Armstrong, Levi Jones, Davey Ray, and Bobby East rounded out the top ten. Jones had started 31st on the field.

Yellow flag laps counted for the first 75 laps. During the last 25 laps only green flag laps were counted. The original start of eleven rows of three resulted in four cars spinning between turns one and two. That was the first of ten or more incidents that produced cautions and some intense restarts.

Kent Schmidt was the first of four drivers to bring out the red flag when his midget flipped in turn one on lap 74. Brad Kuhn endured the same fate a lap later. Kody Swanson was involved in the hardest crash of the evening on lap 83. He was transported by helicopter to St. Mary‘s Hospital in Evansville, IN. Tanner Swanson rolled his midget along the guard rail in turn two on lap 90 to bring about the final red flag.

In UMP Open Wheel Modified action Bradley Sterrett of Bloomington, IN, won the 25 lap feature. Sterrett started sixth in a stout field of front runners as evidenced in the two close qualifying heat races. After the required post feature race trip across the scales Sterrett cut a couple of victory doughnuts on the way back to victory lane. An excited driver climbed out of the car to greet the fans. “This is incredible. It has been a while.” Sterrett’s last win at Haubstadt was on Sept. 18th last fall.

Levi Kissinger came from deeper in the pack to place second. Kissinger was working on a third consecutive feature win at the track. Second heat winner Dave Beck was third. Beck’s victory over Paul Miles and Sterrett in heat two was a see-saw battle with lead changes every lap. Tyler Nicely and Paul Miles rounded out the top five for the modified feature.

The UMP Modifieds will be back on the card next Sunday May 29th when the MSCS Sprints make their first appearance of the 2011season at Tri-State Speedway. The sprints will be running for $3,000 to win the Memorial Weekend Classic with the modifieds gunning for a $600 top prize.
