Will be taking me extra set of clothing so I can change out of my good clothes after my wifes grandmothers funeral in Grandfield on Saturday afternoon. What could I expect as far as car count and running of the show? Haven't been there in about ten years and with Lawton not running yet, Altus is on my high beams.
That is IF wife lets me go anywhere...
Imput welcomed.

David,
I race at Altus Speedway and have raced there since 2004. The first 2 races this year (this being the 2nd) are non-points nights. There is a couple of theories on that. Some folks who run for points, won't come out, especially if they already have made an open practice to shake down thier car. There is a increase in money for these two events, but not a lot of increase.
The track changed ownership beginining last year. It is on the upswing, however the racing you will see tonight will not compare to what you will see at a normal dirt track racing event. The car count is embarrassing, but it isn't for the lack of trying. I think when everyone gets out there, you will see approx 10-15 cars per division. This would be much improved over past years. The owner has paid full purse every night since he took over even if there is a small car count in some divisions. That is gaining some confidence in some to build/buy cars.
The street stock division has the most potential and could see a nice field of 12-14 cars tonight. With the track being 1/3 mile, this makes a nice little race. Tonight you will see Hornets, Street Stocks, Super Stocks, Sport Mods and a new class of Bombers.
You will have to go with an open mind. Just understand that it won't be like the racing you are use to. but we are trying to rebuild and have a good time. Facts are facts.....

That was my plan but got overriden by my wife as it worked out we all left together. Preliminarily I was to wait for my son to get off work at Fedex and then drive like hell to get to the free lunch they provided us. But two nights before my son decided to go Explorer surfing and face planted himself on the cement at 40 mph and got scraped and bruised pretty good. He couldn't work so we left as a family.
I knew not to look for much for the weekly show as was there about twenty years ago (Sooner Int'l) and I learned not to expect much. But, racing is racing and though it is asphalt, the track needs support.
To finally answer your question nope, didn't get to but your info and heads up was very much appreciated. Maybe it will also become of service to others on here wanting to make a trip if all other dirt tracks get rained out - if it ever rains again.
