MAYBE SPEED CHANNEL will learn from the demise of NSSN , AND IMPROVE there programing , less NASCAR , AND MORE COVERAGE OF OTHER RACING . Better yet it would be nice to show more films of racing from yesterday into a weekly program , where is Speed Channel's creative programing director ??

I guess that you don't understand or know that Speed is owned by FOX, which is heavily invested in NASCAR. The executives at Speed know who butters their bread, so to speak, so I don't expect to see many changes in their programming...

NSSN's ceasing of publication of their print newspaper had nothing to do with their coverage of various facets of the sport of Auto Racing (which they did better than anyone) or NASCAR in particular. It was just a sign of these poor economic and more electronic times.

You can blame the internet for the demise of NSSN. There is nothing the Speed Channel should change based on the demise of NSSN. The two subjects really don't even relate to each other that much. NASCAR is where it's at with regard to the American racing scene. Many on this board obviously prefer sprint cars, but NASCAR is what is popular with the public and that's what counts. I like Speed Channel for what it is and I would not change anything if I were them. A little more sprint racing on TV would be great, but it's not going to happen. Sprint car racing will never be big on TV, but let's not open that can of worms!

How out of touch are you....

From a TV Standpoint, it's all about eyeballs watching so they can set their advertising rates. Like it or not, NASCAR (as well as shows like Pinks, Car Warriors, etc.) get ratings. Most forms of racing do not (ie: World of Outlaws, Rally, Late Model Racing, swamp buggies, etc.).

It's a no brainer for SPEED to stay with the status quo. If they don't show the programming that people watch, they can't get the $$ needed from advertisers to keep the network afloat.

I'd like to think you have some intelligence, but you seem to sorely lack common sense as evidenced by your multiple posts throughout the years....

Agree 100%. Dirt racing is much better than nascar, but like it or not, there are about 100 times (or more) the people that will tune into a nascar show than there are people that would tune into a show dedicated to any other form of racing. They aren't stupid just because they are covering a sport you think is boring. Look at soccer. Worst sport ever invented. Will not make fun of any network that covers world cup because they have over 1 billion people watching it. Just because i would rather pick my finger nails out with a pair of pliers than watch 5 minutes of soccer, doesnt mean it doesnt draw huge revenue.

Interesting subject regarding Speed programming more dirt track racing. Fact is there used to be more Sprint Car racing on Speed, that's one of the things they specialized in when they were first starting out. If it was a money maker for them they'd be doing it but it obviously didn't attract the kind of ratings and ad revenue it needed to stay on the air.

Lately I have tuned into some of those Dirt Knight USMTS Modified shows and that has been kind of interesting. One thing I notice is that a lot of that series plays out to small crowds at little tracks in the middle of nowhere. The only barometer I had to go by where there was a direct comparison was the show that aired from Jackson Speedway. The USMTS crowd at Jackson appeared to be a lot smaller than their big 360 race last Spring and the World of Outlaws shows they've hosted.

Their crowds don't equal the hype that surrounds that series and they don't stand out from Sprint Car or Dirt Late Model racing for that matter. I had to ask myself why this Dirt Knights series is on television when there are better options out there. The answer has to be that they've got backers footing the bill. I notice a lot of commercials for a company that builds steel buildings and I'm guessing that's their big backer for the broadcast.

It's too bad that NSSN fell by the wayside but the internet has spelled trouble for print publications. Now in an ironic twist the new social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter along with YouTube channels are drawing a lot of web traffic away from traditional racing sites. Some of these "old" text and photo racing sites (mine included) have been around for 15 years now which is an eternity in internet years. I see people migrating to the audio and streaming video sites so the internet is changing a lot. Who knows what the next hot thing will be, it probably hasn't been invented yet. wink

SIR VANDE 77 YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I MEAN or what I state on my posts if I don't agree with your ideas

The bottom line is the TV PRODUCT CAN BE IMPROVED BY SPEED CHANNEL , I know all about what you state in your comments to me

Unfortunately TV CREATED MOST OF THE NASCAR FANS ,WHO HAD NEVER SEEN RACING BEFORE LIKE US DIE HARD FANS OF ALL TYPES OF RACING and today most NASCAR FANS think there is no other forms of Auto Racing except NASCAR.

Every product can be improved, it's just what are people willing to pay for....

It appears that advertisers are only willing to pay for NASCAR programming or shows that don't cost very much $$$ to produce (Pinks, Car Warriors, etc.).

I would LOVE to see more dirt racing on TV, but I'm a realist. It's not about the hardcore fans, its about $$$$.

If you are so worried about all types of racing, then bring new people (you should pay for them to get in) to the races with you instead of complaining about the lack of coverage on SPEED...

There is an easy answer to getting more sprint car coverage on TV, just put Danica Patrick in a sprinter. Speed Channel would jump at the chance to cover that. She probably wouldn't be very good at it but she would look good looking bad.

And she could drive a Dale Jr. car------head-on into the fence and wave her arms at the driver she plowed into. And the fans would love it!

I just can't believe that drifting crap can get on ESPN2, but our racing can't. And Speed covering bike racing more than sprints, no way you can convince me there are more bike fans than sprint car fans.

There used to be alot more short track/dirt racing on ESPN, too. But that was before they were able to get contracts with the NFL, MLB and NBA. Once they got those, racers and Aussie Rules football fans were left in the dust. The sad thing is, with all the channels out there, they all seem to be gravitating to the same reality show format. I guess that is where the raties lie. It is just too bad. Where these channels were supposed to fill niches for their various fans, they now just play to the crowd. History/A and E and Discovery are the two big players, and they often have identical reality shows. I still don't completely understand what a pawn shop has to do with history (other than an old object or two), or logging for that matter. Same goes for tow truck shows on Speed. I have to say that of the racing reality shows, Dirt Knights seems to get it right, I would still much rather see an entire night's event played out, from heats to re-draws to B mains and features, edited for yellow laps. There is plenty of drama right there.

As far as the small crowds at a modified race when compared to sprint cars? Yeah, there is little comparison. Too bad, too because the USMTS in particular puts on one of the best racing shows that you will ever see; at least when they are promoting the event. The Staley's do a fantastic job of organizing and running an event. And the racing is top notch with any one of 10 or more teams and drivers able to win. Often local, less well funded teams can pull the win off, too. I would easily put the USMTS on a par with any of the sprint car shows that I shoot.

It is too bad. If you could take all of the nascar fans and make them attend a few of these awesome dirt track races, they would not go to nascar races anymore. (like i dont, once i had my mind opened up to late model, modified, and of course sprint car racing) But until that happens, they will put on tv whatever pays the bills the easiest. That my friends is nascar, MLB, NFL, and the NBA.

(And as far as "Pawn Stars" goes, you should really watch that show. I learn more about history in a half hour off of that show than i learned from my boring ass history teacher--but logging shouldnt be on, i agree)

Well, I didn't say that I didn't watch Pawn Stars and I also stated that there is some historical context in what they have. That said, I had good history teachers, and I also have a great interest in history. I am one of those that still studies history through reading and other non classroom venues just because it interests me. I sometimes work in Europe and am VERY distracted by all the history that surrounds every day life over there.
