With contest promoter GRP busy getting ready for the UMSS awards banquet on Saturday night January 22, renounded local area race fan, announcer and ATD scribe Terry Lenhertz (HoosiersUp) was in charge of the opening day at the mythical MDTR Speedway on the first day of the contest. Terry had already tested the bleachers and pronounced them safe, so he focused his attention on testing the nachos before venturing pitside. With Keith and Sally in the concession stand, Terry gave the newer "hotter" variety nachos the thumbs-up. Terry then checked the #0 Dirt Dueller modified before heading to that trouble-maker in the pits, the Lucky 7 entry from Lucky Lenny Racing.

One update to Question #15 in the Late Model Division. The correct year was 1975, not 1977 for the 1st Annual Minnesota-Iowa Challenge Cup. I actually had it right in my notes, but somehow I managed to do a typo and it ended up with a "7" instead of a "5" like it should have. Stan M get that updated when he has a chance.

Also made a revision to Modified Division Question #20. The new revised Question due to the race results article actually missing the 10th place finisher in the summary section of the mod feature finishers, will be as follows. Stan M will get this updated when he has a chance. A point will be awarded should anybody actually come up with the correct answer to the original question too.

At the 1st Annual Pepsi Cup at CLS, who was the only driver who did NOT finish in the top ten in either the modified or late model divisions?

Under bright sunny skies, the 12th Annual GRP Racing Trivia Contest kicked into gear when Stan M waved the green flag early on Saturday January 22, 2011. The mythical MDTR Speedway was primed and ready for contest action, having been finely prepared by the Swampman with assistance from famous water truck driver and diesel sprint car mechanic Chuck P. Keith and Sally had the concession stand ready while Terry Lehnertz was in charge of promoter functions on opening day. Guest announcer Kevin Nickel, a man of many words, kept the crowd entertained (I think).

The first scores to be posted came on the second day, as the very first entry came from a long-time contestant at MDTR. Kevin Mudrak brought his LateModel1 Len's Auto Body car trackside for some fast laps. Kevin is always a top-runner, and his 2011 effort would be a strong one. Posting a fine 37 point effort, Kevin waited a good share of the day for the next competitor to hit the gas. Mark Schreiner, the defending champion in the late model division, pounded the loud pedal and tossed dirt far into the stands. Mark's big Ford in his 17L late model was hooked up and hauling. The "Hutchinson Hot Shoe" edged past Kevin and into a slim lead with a 38 point tally. His score still leaves a small margin for someone to slip past, but it was be a real challenge.

In the sprint car ranks, two strong runners from Sioux Falls, SD shared a stacker trailer and once again made their way to the MDTR Speedway. Alex Johnson and Tyler Urban were in the house! Alex was first to hit the track in his new Wolfweld. Alex topped his performance of last season with a solid 36 point score. No sooner had Alex exited the track, the crowd came to their feet to watch the "Urban Assault Vehicle" of Tyler Urban rock-n-roll the MDTR Speedway. Tyler was looking to improve upon his seventh place finish last year, and he turned in an identical 36 point effort which bettered his 2010 score by two markers. Will these strong runs stand up against the upcoming on-slaught from contest kingpins? Stay tuned.

On Monday, which is typically a very light day in the contest, the first modified division score was posted. Webb Lake, Wisconsin's Adam Jack brought his Error 48 Jack Link's Beef Jerky sponsored modified on to the track for his second appearance at MDTR. "The Wizard from Webb Lake" cranked the wheel hard and roared around the high banks. Following contact with the wall in turn four, Adam was able to finish with a 13 point score. He sits atop the standings for the moment, but that could change soon.

The new "Snow Melter Nachos" from Keith and Sally's MDTR kitchen are reported to be quite popular. We'll see what the fourth day of the contest brings for entries on Tuesday.

Point Standings as of January 24, 2011

1. Mark Schreiner, Hutchinson MN = 38 points

2. Kevin Mudrak, Superior WI = 37 points

Two additional entries arrived on the fourth day of the contest. Action at the MDTR Speedway was fast and furious, but only two scores were posted. Mark Schreiner, "The Hutchinson Hot Shoe," completed his run in 2011 contest action with entries in both the sprint car and modified divisions.

Team Tireguy Racing unloaded their Maxim sprint car with a big Ford engine under the hood. The 17L machine roared to life, as Minnesota fans hoped the notably stock-car oriented Mark might possibly give the South Dakotans a run for the top spot. Such would not be the case, but Tireguy turned in a solid effort with a 30 point performance.

It was then time to bring out the big mod. In a tribute to his retiring all-time favorite modified racer and good friend, Jamie Lemke, Tireguy had the mod painted up in the exact same paint scheme that Jamie had in his final 2010 season. The thunder of the big Ford could be felt in the campground area. It did not take Mark long to blow past early leader Adam Jack. Could Mark approach the great run he had in his late model? Mark found the going tough in the first half of his run, but he excelled during the final half. Racing under Stan's checkers with a 33 point score, Team Tireguy would occupy two first place positions at the conclusion of day #4. Stay tuned to see what is in store on day five.

1. Mark Schreiner, Hutchinson MN = 38

2. Kevin Mudrak, Superior WI = 37

Just one entry in on Wednesday. It came from the Hoffman racing family from South Dakota. A former Rookie of the Year and top-runner in the sprint car division, Kayla Hoffman, pulled through the back gate of the MDTR Speedway to give it her best in the 2011 version of the contest. Kayla hails currently from Watertown, SD. With her dad Todd turning the wrenches on the family sprinter, Kayla got off to a great start in the first half of her run, leading at the midway point. The second half proved to be a bit tricky and more difficult, as she bounced off a couple of ruts in the always pesky turn two at MDTR. Kayla capped off her run with a solid 31 point score to move past the Tireguy entry and into third place behind a couple of other South Dakotans. When it comes to sprint cars, those South Dakota natives are a tough group to compete against!

Point Standings as of January 26, 2011

Late Model Division:

1. Mark Schreiner, Hutchinson MN = 38

2. Kevin Mudrak, Superior WI = 37

Sprint Car Division:

3. Kayla Hoffman, Watertown SD = 31

4. Mark Schreiner, Hutchinson MN = 30

It was certainly a more active day on Thursday at the MDTR Speedway for the sixth day of the contest. A total of seven entries were received. Three each in the mods and lates with one in the sprints. The Swampman got plenty of water on the track today, and a few of the contestants struggled on the heavy surface.

In the Late Model Division, veteran contestant John Lackmann from Long Prairie brought his triple decker trailer to MDTR with three entries. The Modchaser late model #00 was the first one out. It also proved to be his best ride of the evening. John wheeled home with a 32 point tally. Next up was a strong sprint car runner but in her late model. The Hoffman racing family star, Kayla, had the late model cranking out some fast laps early on. An oiling problem slowed her progress, but she did manage to turn in a 16 point effort. Immediately after Kayla exited the track, Roger Koth made the LONG tow from Pierre, SD to once again participate in the contest. Roger had his Rocket chassis primed and ready for competition. Fans love when Roger makes his appearance at MDTR. Roger had some handling problems in the second half of his run, so he had to settle for an 18 point score. Nonetheless, Roger topped fellow South Dakotan Kayla in the late model standings.

The Modified Division had activity today as well with three entries arriving. The famous Latemodel1 entry of Kevin Mudrak arrived with his Mod1 "Next to Duluth, We're Superior" former Ed Wakefield car. Kevin was not able to devote as much time to his mod as he had his late model, and a tire started to go down near the 1/4 mark of his run. Kevin managed to three wheel it home with a 27 point performance. When the next contestant rolled trackside, the fans were buzzing as three-time mod champion John Lackmann had his Modchaser Zimmy's Action Photos BC Chassis ready to head to the front. It was soon apparent that the Modchaser motor was not up to full song though, as John worked several different lines trying to gain speed. In the end, Tireguy had survived a serious threat for the lead when Modchaser sped across the line with a 29 point score. The final mod run of the day came from Al Schmidt in his Smitty's Motorsports #12 mod. The Watertown racer had the "duct tape" special ready to rumble. Smitty turned in a 17 point score to best his car number by five markers. He leads the South Dakota drivers in the mod standings, oh wait, there is only one so far. Smile

The final attempt today came from Modchaser with his sprint car. Racing the Modchaser Action Chassis H.I.T. sponsored sprinter, John was on top of his game, well not really. But at least he was not on top of his lid like his first sprint car effort many years ago. This one lasted the whole run, but John put too many tear-offs on at first and could not see well. Then he hit the CP "Mudhole" in turn two and promptly used every tear-off the following lap. After nearly scaring the carp out of Colin in turn two, Modchaser wrestled his sprinter home with a 9 point run. It was not a DNF, but dang close to it as John left no mud clod unturned. The paint crew will also have to repaint the turn two wall before tomorrow's action. Nick Lavato volunteered to do the painting, as GRP was told Nick has some experience with a brush...I mean spray gun.

Here's the updated point standings.

Point Standings as of January 27 2011

Late Model Division:

1. Mark Schreiner, Hutchinson MN = 38

2. Kevin Mudrak, Superior WI = 37

3. John Lackmann, Long Prairie MN = 32

4. Roger Koth, Pierre SD = 18

5. Kayla Hoffman, Watertown SD = 16

2. Tyler Urban, Sioux Falls SD = 36

3. Kayla Hoffman, Watertown SD = 31

4. Mark Schreiner, Hutchinson MN = 30

5. John Lackmann, Long Prairie MN = 9 (tear-off troubles)

4. Al Schmidt, Watertown SD = 17

Friday's summary of activity at MDTR:

As usual, Friday was a busy day in contest action with a total of 11 entries received. The late model division led the way with five entries and two lead changes. A lead change took place in the modified division with three new scores posted. The sprint car division also had three entries, but Alex and Tyler withstood a challenge for the top spot. Here's a brief recap of the contest today at MDTR Speedway with Todd Narveson calling the action from the booth.

The Late Model Division in the contest is always a hotly contested class amongst several top runners. Ray Beste put his entries together in quick fashion this year, towed his triple axle three-car hauler south, and signed in for contest action on Friday. Ray Beste brought his "Cabin Fever" #51 late model trackside for his first of three attempts. Ray always enjoys the contest, but was unable to participate last year. A fine effort nonetheless with only 14 minutes spent on his entry produced a 24 point score. Ray would be back on the track later on.

The first rookie contender in the 2011 version of the contest rolled through the back gate with two entries in his stacker trailer. Jeremy Ulik from St. Cloud was getting his first look at the MDTR Speedway during contest week. With Rob Reimer selling him his U-hauler stacker trailer, Jeremy unloaded the "Big U" late model. A solid run earned him a 20 point score in his first contest appearance.

The next contestant in the late model ranks needs no introduction, as it was none other than CLSracer and famous super stock flagman Chris Stepan. Chris was looking to grab his third late model title and eleventh over all in the various divisions throughout the years. Tireguy had left a slim opening, and Stepan jumped at the opportunity to move past the "Mod Man" and into a one point lead with a 39 point score. The other stumper for Stepan was that nasty number 0 photo. The crowd near it would take perfection to beat him.

Making just his second contest attempt, Chris Hecht from Somerset unloader an incredible looking #27 late model. Chris was the 2009 Rookie of the Year. As his made quick lap after quick lap, the crowd suddenly realized that this kid could gas it. Would he have enough in the tank to defeat CLSracer though? Perfect through the first 20 laps, CH was determined in his efforts. That "super" nasty first photo would get him, right? Not a chance. When Chris sped under Stan's checkered flags, he had pulled off a last lap pass for the win! Yes race fans, Chris Hecht turned in a PERFECT 40 point performance becoming only the second contestant to ever record a flawless tally in the late model ranks (Chris Stepan pulled off the feat back in 2006). The crowd went wild and Bubba even spilled his beer.

The final entry in the late model division on Friday came from a strong contender from southern Minnesota. In his rookie season last year, Tim Plantikow from Austin had recorded a fifth place finish as the top rookie. Tim's 2011 run earned him a better score by four points, as the Ed Sanger Hero Car #95 late model roared under the checkers with 27 points.

Modified action was also fast and furious on Friday. Ray Beste rolled his "Three Wide Media" #3w modified out of the trailer, and the fans flocked to Ray's finely crafted creation to grab some driver photo cards. Ray spent a little more time getting his mod prepped and ready to rumble, but he did not have as much time to spend as he would have liked. Ray rustled up a very credible 29 point score for such a time-limited effort. Ray had one final tour to make, and that would be in the sprinter.

Jeremy Ulik was back on the track in his "Big U" #57 modified. Like his late model effort, this was the first time Jeremy had scratched the dirt at MDTR with his mod entry. Getting off to a slow start, Jeremy quickly got the hang of the high-banks and buzzed past Stan M in the flagstand with a very solid 25 point rookie score.

The final mod entry on Friday would be from a former division champion. Chris Stepan unloaded the CLSracer #11 mod. Chris was the 2007, 2008 and 2010 mod champion, so fans knew he would pose a serious threat to Tireguy. Indeed he would. The famous super stock flagman, announcer and promoter wheeled his mod to a 36 point score, as he overtook Mark Schreiner's #17L mod for the top spot. Can anyone defeat the late model guru in his bid to earn a fourth mod title? There is still one day left to learn the answer to that question.

In the sprint car class on Friday, Ray Beste was first on the track. He would not be first in class, but Ray's ONLY goal was to race past Modchaser's 9 point effort and stay out of last place. Mission accomplished for the slick Sauk Centre I-94 sprint car. Ray struggled mightily with the ill-handling beast, but he managed to slip past John enroute to a whopper 12 point score.

Long-time contestant Rob Palmer from South Dakota returned to the MDTR Speedway with a sprint car. Keeping up with his fellow South Dakotans would be no easy task for this popular stock car fan, but Rob put the "Red Devil" sprinter on the cushion and threw caution to the wind. With mud slinging high over the fences and thrilling the crowd with his rim-riding style, Rob completed his run with a 27 point score. No matter where they hail from in South Dakota, they know sprint cars!

Making a return after spending several seasons as a crew chief on his daughter's entry, Todd Hoffman donned his tight old driver's suit and pulled out the backup car from the Hoffman family hauler. A bit disappointed with Kayla's earlier effort, Todd shook off the rust and hammered the the cushion. With only a few minor mishaps in the middle of his run, Todd wheeled past Stan M with a 35 point effort. His bid to overtake Alex and Tyler came up a bit short, but it was great to see Todd back behind the wheel at MDTR.

With one final day to go in contest action, the door is still open by four points in both the modified and sprint car divisions. Chris Hecht has slammed the door on all fellow competitors in the late model division with his perfect performance at MDTR on Friday. Even if another perfect score were to be turned in, Chris has tie-breaker status with the earliest entry. Congrats to Chris Hecht on becoming the 2011 Late Model Division champion with still one full day left!

Word has arrived that a late entry in the sprint car division is on its way from the 2009 Open Wheel Division champion Michael Pietrowksi. We'll see if his hauler can arrive in time for the former champ to unload and hit the MDTR high-banks in hopes of pulling off a last lap pass. Still no word from perennial front-runner Todd Boots. Maybe Todd has retired from the competition like Ron Haugstad has. Stan M is getting ready to wave the white flag soon, signaling the final hour (lap) of the 2011 edition of the contest.

Alex Johnson withstood a strong challenge up front from the 2009 champion. Just about 1/2 lap left to go. Can Alex hold on to claim his first-ever title?

Sunday morning update: Two Sprint Car Division entries arrived in my email Inbox this morning. They were indeed sent before the midnight contest deadline, but super slow email delivery last night (for whatever reason) prevented them from arriving in my Inbox until this morning. The entries are from Todd Boots and Kourtney Pederson. I will score them, since the contestants truly did send them via email before the contest deadline. I will update the standings accordingly. Those two plus Travis Broten's were the only ones that got delayed in email last night. Travis ended up sending his to me via Facebook, so I was able to score his last night.

Just scored Todd Boots' entry...32 points. Kourtney Pederson's entry...28 points!

Alex Johnson holds off a furious late charge to remain the CHAMPION!!!

Todd Boots keeps his string in tact of being the ONLY contestant to have participated in ALL 12 contests so far. Thanks Todd. Also, Kourtney was the only one this year to have correctly identified Dave Ekern in the #14 sprinter! That old B&W Hibbing Raceway photo was also a bit of a stumper for many.
