I was at the PAS for the Glenn Howard Memorial Race and little while before qualifying, Scott announced that Doug Wolfgang was in the house and would be autographing copies of his and Argabright's book, Lone Wolf. A buddy and I went down to buy one and no one except Doug and his wife Jeri were there when we arrived, so we got to talk to him for a few moments. Just for fun, I asked him if any of the guys were running Nitrous Oxide back in the day. His face lit up like a Christmas tree and with a shit eating grin he said "I did". He said it worked great on a sprint car and you didn't really have to use it that much. "Just set a guy up for a pass, usually coming off the corners, push the button, BAM, your gone" He said after they made it illegal "I would fasten a bottle to my leg under my drivers suit and when I got in the car attach the hidden lines" Then while cracking up with laughter, "Probably wasn't the brightest thing in the world to do" I ask him if it would be safe to use in a sprint car today and he said "Yeah, wouldn't be a problem." I brought up the subject of running an unlimited engine-fuel rule for non-wing sprint cars. "Hell yes" and "I think it would be great with the wing cars too." Some other fans by this time were in line for a book, so that's all the time I had to talk to him. Don

Back in the day while alternate fuels (besides methanol) were being experimented with ,not so long ago , over sippn suds a oldtimer told us stories of using Nitro Methane, absoluty strong running fuel, crazy things started to happen splitting blocks, knockn cranks out of engines, crazy meltdowns, thus the termination of use .. but when he was asked the question , boy, did his eyes light up !! funney stuff

I remember Maxwell getting dq'd after winning at Knoxville back in the 70s for running a bit of "pop" in his fuel.

Back in the mid-80's, I thought it was interesting that many teams changed their oil very frequently and would dump it right on the ground. I witnessed a certain #11 car do it on several occasions but that was certainly not the only one.
We speculated that there may have been some designed blow-by and something in that oil that they were trying to bury?????????

The nitro 'trick' I heard of was to soak the air filters or covers in it - nothing in the tank to fail a spot check and it was gone from the filter by the end of the race.

Back in the 80's at a WoO race at Flemington, my dad and I went in the pits after the racing was over and I saw 2 blue NOS bottles hanging on the inside wall of Haudenschild's trailer right out in the open for god and everyone to see. To this day people don't believe me or say it must have been done as some kind of inside joke, but either way there they were.

Evidently it was legal, (but not publicized) from what Doug said. after they made it illegal "I would fasten a bottle to my leg under my drivers suit and when I got in the car attach the hidden lines"

a lot of people have done things to toy with people. maybe haud had been accused of cheating with NOS and just hung some bottles out to taunt people. we used to have a fuel jug labeled "nitro" sitting out in the open that never contained anything. back when a fire suppression system was mandatory in our series i saw a few fire bottles in cars with NOS stickers on them. people were just playing games.

I remember a driver back many years ago getting busted for using nitrious at Riverside Speedway in West Memphis. I can't remember if it was Sammy Swindell or Lee Brewer, Jr. But the bottle was found hidden behind the rock guard in front of the radiator.
