What I don't get is, I read on hear all the time that a driver doesn't get to set the car up the way they want. OK, 1.You have the car owner. 2. You have the driver. 3. You have the crew chief. With drivers switching car owners, sometimes they may or may not bring their crew with them. Why would the crew chief have priority over the driver when it comes to setting up the car? Most drivers know what kinda set up they want to run at a particular track so shouldnt it be the crew chiefs job to set the car up the way the driver wants?

depends who the crew chief is, depends who the driver is, a bit like a quarter back to coach relationship in the NFL

The driver come in and tells the crew chief that "the car is doing this" and they they discuss possible changes, crew chief makes the necessary changes and tells the driver what he did (most of the time). So, why have a crew chief if you're not willing to put trust into him/her. Now, if the crew chief is not capable of setting up the car to a driver's liking, you replace the crew chief, or maybe even the driver.

I worked on car last year (for a few shows on off nights from my regular gig) where I had a driver with years of experience and championships under his belt. He would know exactly what he wants the car to be doing or not doing in the next event. After a small conversation and coming up with a game plan he was most satisfied with how the car reacted during the feature.**keeping the driver happy is a must.

I have also helped a few younger guys that have just started out over the last few years and have had to teach them what to feel and notice in the car. On most nights with "the kids" I spend most of the night paying REAL close attention on how the car looks and is reacting and have to make adjustments accordingly for their lack of communication on what the car is doing.

In both differences we've ran good and won some races here and there so it really all depends on how people mesh and if they're capable of working together. I've also helped people one night and thought this person is an idiot and I'm not wasting my time because they already know everything so they can set it up themselves and run the B main....I don't care lol
