The Police chief in Knoxville says every year they arrest more LOCALS than out of town people. He says the out of towners are for the most part very well behaved. It's the locals that are hauled in for public intox and other offenses.

I gotta agree LW, take them damn receivers out when you're not using them...I do!
Just think of all the other stories that may have happened out there that you're never gonna hear about. Sad but true, you almost have to think like a criminal to save your shit.
Hell, someone just stole the remains of a 9 year old girl from 48 years ago right out of the grave yard this past weekend here in Central PA. WTF?
|
I forgot to take it off, so I guess that means it's OK to steal it. Maybe next time you guys start pissing behind someones truck you will look down before hitting the kneecaps on my hitch..lol

Yeah, I agree. I know what you're talking about...the guy from Alabama or wherever. It did seem like a lot of that stuff stopped when they caught him. But I hate to say this as a generalization...I know several "good" kids in Knoxville, but for the most part, they have a bad reputation. Every Homecoming weekend seems like kids are egging cars and houses, breaking and stealing other people's property. There are some problems with kids in this town unfortunately.

There are some problems with SOME kids in this town. There are alot of honest respectful ones but it only takes a few bad apples and they get a bad reputation. I think its that way everywhere.
Just because you live on the other side of the river dosent make you any better (PELLA).

If you are talking to me specifically, I don't live anywhere near Pella.

The acts of stupidity I saw the under 20 crowd perpertrating were:
(1) Guesstimates on my part for age, as they could have been 25+ yrs old for all I know.
(2) I couldn't tell you if they were from Knoxville, Pella or Australia as how can anyone? (if caught..then their hometown would come out, that seems to be the only way to say for sure.)
(3) I would betcha ... 98% of what went on (being written about here), were not by residents of Marion Co. IA of any age.
My senses tell me why would folks that live with in a reasonable walking or even driving distance pay to camp or sleep for payment if home is close by?
Most of the incidents that occured .... were most likely 'moments of opportunities' seized upon by passer-by's.

I rarely spend time looking at this board anymore, but some comments on here about local kids have really pissed me off. Before you go and run your mouth about the Knoxville kids' 'bad reputation", Stacy, I would suggest that if West Liberty had 25,000 extra people in town you would have similar, if not worse, problems than what you see here. Like anywhere else, you have a small percentage of the population creating a problem, whether it's Nationals week or any other time.
Let me tell you about the kids I know (including my own). They are spending time trying to make an enjoyable time for the people who come here...they park cars, clean up the grandstands and suites, volunteer at functions and generally and genuinely show a lot of class to our "guests" and try to further a positive reputation for our town.
My son played on a state tournament baseball team this summer. The team stayed at Embassy Suites in downtown Des Moines and had equipment and money stolen from their vans overnight. Maybe they should blame the whole city? Anyway, those kids showed class and played through the distractions. Regardless, the kids I know don't appreciate being painted with the broad brush that you attempt to use.
Has it ever occured to anyone that when you have such a crowd of people who bring a lot of cash and easily obtainable stuff to an area, that said area will also attract unsavory varments who come simply because there are easy marks here? Of course, within that crowd of racefans, there are those that lack self-control or respect the property and rights of others, especially when fueled by alcohol or cloaked in anonymity in a crowd. 90% of racefans are good people, it's the other 10% that create problems for everyone.
You know, many people in this town open their homes to racefans during Nationals. Even more enjoy the interaction with new people they meet because of the event. Most people cheerfully put up with the inconviences of the week even if they don't care about the races. It would be wise for folks who come here understand that they do so as our guests and it would be greatly appreciated if they'd show a bit more respect and personal restraint than what I've increasingly seen the last few years.

We've had 2 coolers stolen in Knoxville during racing events: a WoO show last year & Thurs. morning between 2-7 a.m. of this year's Nationals. Friday at approx. 1:30 a.m. they were back...our neighbor saw a shadow through the window of his camper at & hightailed out in his undershorts to find what appeared to be a male teenager hiding behind & eventually running away from our camper. His newly-filled cooler was dropped by the thieves near our camper as he ran away. Just down the street another guy had his cooler stolen during daylight hours...I think around 6-6:30 p.m. Worthless losers, get a job & buy your own stuff! These thieves will someday have to answer to the Big Man upstairs! Needless to say we will lock our stuff up from now on when attending racing events in Knoxville.

It is local kids stealing the booze it doesnt take a genius to figure that out. Ive been there before and seen the few losers in town causing all the trouble. The majority are great people in Knoxville but there are some real trashy types that tarnish the town.
Cheers!

I agree with you, John, and I said before that I didn't want to generalize because I do know good kids in Knoxville. And you are right, lots of them (probably the majority) are busy doing jobs during Nationals that are needed. But here's what I know...the cars that got scratched on Larson Street (it was by a big nail which was laying on the sidewalk the next morning)...there was a group of about 3-4 adolescent kids hanging around that area after the races. When the scratches were reported to the cops the next day, the officer talked about those kids, said he had stopped to talk to them and told them to go home because they were out past curfew. If they had known about the scratches then (which they wouldn't because it was dark), they would have done more because they suspect it was them. I don't know any more than what I have read about coolers being stolen and campers being broken into. I suspect that's not just kids thinking they are funny. But I'm not just basing what I said about their bad reputation on this year's Nationals. For several recent years at homecoming time, there are lots of problems, once that I know of resulting in homecoming activities getting cancelled. And every year, I hear more than one person from out of town saying if Late Model Nationals falls on homecoming weekend again, they won't come. Yes, John, it's too bad that a few kids give off a bad impression when there are so many good ones. And no, the kids in my town are not angels either. I was glad to hear that the car burglaries and such earlier in the year was some dude from Alabama or wherever and not locals. But I'm just sayin' that the few who are doing the antics at homecoming and maybe at Nationals are giving a bad image to others and it is becoming a stereotype on the outside. So maybe it would be good if the good kids (again, yes there are several) hear anything about these bad things that were done if it was by other local kids, they come forward with what they know.

I hear
I was told
I think
Until you know keep trap shut
We went from a sign to now campers broke into Its all Knoxville kids without knowing one thing for sure.
I am They walked by all the parked cars that they could have broke into and went to the camp ground and took somebodies 2 cent cooler.
I think we need to teach our kids how to steal better stuff.
My guess it was your next door neighbour that was out of beer

OK, fine, it coulda been anyone. Coulda been local kids or adults, coulda been race fans, coulda been unsavory varmints who think we are an easy mark. Just somebody let us know when you get it all figured out and settled. I'd like to have the $2,000 it will take to repaint for the scratches. I don't have a budget for that since the motel room rates in Knoxville unexpectedly doubled their normal rate for 360 Nationals weekend.

Did you happen to see a sign, three coolers, two lawn chairs, a dozen Pepsi products, a trailer hitch, and a 1/2 drank bottle of tequila? Word is Knoxville law enforcement already have the 3-inch nail he pinned on those little kids!
That damn T.K.!

Seriously, isn't the crime occuring by less than 1% of the people in town at the time? Who knows which population they are from; regardless it is too few to paint a picture over all of any group. Just a few pricks ruining the weekend for some good people.
