I think the Devils Bowl clips are from Oct 1987(open comp show). The Nance 1(Craig Keel) crashes along the inside wall and another car bounces off of the outer wall in turn one.
JD and I were right behind the car at turn 1.
This was the weekend sammy debuted the TMC 1. Gilliam Trucking sent a new car down there and it got trashed before it even got on dirt.

So was that before arm restraints were invented? i know it wasn't, but some of these guys weren't wearing any. It's amazing how far safety has come.

Arm restraints were in by 1977 I think. There were some but not all using them by the late 80's.
The concern of being trapped in a car has slowed restraints from the beginning. The first lapbelts used in the AAA (now USAC), were not liked at all. Without rollbars at the time, some thought your chances were better if you were thrown out of the car rather than be a part of it as it rolled over. There was even one driver that practiced unlatching his belt quickly for such an event!
By the 80's it was about being trapped in a fire, and exit time was important. Track crews have stepped it up in most cases on response.
