After racing up to 8th, Sammy held on for a dismal 14th place finish at the Brad Doty Classic. Post race inspection revealed the RR was missing a huge chunk of rubber. A GY track rep responded with, "That is a factory defect".

Maybe the WoO should demand a little more quality control before we tear up a bunch of equipment or God forbid somone gets hurt due to "factory defects"...

You mean something like Nascar's quality control?

Has anyone encountered any GY shortages yet? If a company starts getting behind in production, sometimes quality suffers. Sometimes stuff just slips by too. We've all had a bad day at work.

Too bad for Sammy. I haven't heard of anyone else having problems last night. Sometimes stuff just happens.

Talked with a local car owner when the Goodyear deal was finished and he said there was no-way that (Goodyear) would be able to have enough tires for the July /August big races. It's all in the math how many tires they knew were needed to run the big races along with regular weekly series racing. Who do you think is going to get the tires?

When the Goodyear deal is finished??

Let's hope this kind of issue doesn't happen on August 14th.

I spoke to a goodyear rep at a track 2 weeks ago and they knew in the first year of this program that there would be issues. But not having enough tires was not one of the issues.

There is no need for drama until there is an actual shortage

gofast, that is so true.

However, can you imagine the DRAMA of The Nationals and not enough tires when it comes time for the feature on Saturday night? That would be a hoot!Smile

Have them made in China! For crying out loud, the quality and production numbers would be way better. wink

The economy of Haiti is badly in need of help.

They might consider that!

I hope Goodyear has an epic fail at Knoxville. Then maybe everyone will see them for who they really are. Long Live Hoosier!!

Haiti may need help... there are a lot of folks on the Gulf coast I'd help out first. Of course... given the choice between free money for no work and working in a Goodyear plant, neither Gulfers or Haitians will choose the latter.

I like how this thread began with, continued with and will end with total speculation.

As was posted a bit ago... until there is a shortage... there is no shortage.

If people want to say that Sammy's tire was a defect... knock yourself out. No tire manufacturer is without fault in that area. No series is without fault in that area. Heck of a race last year at the Brickyard, huh? Yeah. (tires)

I guess I'll listen when the impossible happens: when the car was set up properly & the hardest tire compound was chosen. Until then...people just want to whine.

a harder compound will not always result in less tire problems. a tire needs to wear to remove some of the heat in it. if the rubber is not worn off, it may over heat and cause problems. soft tires might wear out and hard tires might chunk.

I guess no one on this board ever had a problem with their Firestone, Cooper, or other brands of tires....if it's made by a man, it can experience a failure.

Heat is the most likely cause of any tire failure, so choosing too soft a compound, running a tire underinflated, or any other number of reasons can cause a tire to chunk and blow out. But a quickie diagnosis at the track, even by a Goodyear rep, doesn't hold a lot of credence to me......

All I know is the winged 410 racing has been better this year than it has been in a long time. Goodyear may have it's problems but Hoosier was the worst thing to happen to sprint car racing. If they had thier way everyone would be running supersoft gummies and you'd be putting on new tires everytime you hit the track to stay competeitive. Plus everyone would be locked down and little passing would occur. Of course the rubber would be burnt to the track in no time as well. At least with GY, the cars are unhooked a little more and we're seeing good racing.
