Martin Works Magic for ASCS Canyon Win at The PAS!
Lonnie Wheatley, PERRIS, Cal. (May 22, 2010) – Yuma, Arizona’s Mike Martin worked his own special brand of magic to reach victory lane in the first American Sprint Car Series main event held in the State of California by topping Saturday night’s 30-lapper at the Perris Auto Speedway.
“The Magic Man” made the most of his pole starting position by racing to his first career wingless ASCS Canyon Region triumph aboard the Shaver-powered Ultimate Off Road/Mattco Painting No. 16 Maxim, collecting $2,200 that included a $200 bonus as the top finishing Arizona entry.
Martin raced to the checkered flag ahead of Josh Pelkey, with 10th-starter R.J. Johnson, current series points leader Charles Davis, Jr., and Stevie Sussex rounding out an all-Arizona top five.
Nic Faas picked up an extra $200 as the top finishing California rep in sixth with two-time ASCS Canyon Region champ Jeremy Sherman in seventh.
Jimmy Crawford was eighth, Kenny Perkins charged from 20th to ninth and Bob Ream, Jr., completed the top ten.
Faas, Pelkey, Rusty Carlile and Dalten Gabbard topped heat race action for the 29-car field, with Ronnie Clark winning the “B” Main.

Have been watching California Sprint Car racing since I moved from Michigan in the 1970's. I don't think I have ever seen anything like that. It was incredible!

If you weren't there, hopefully there will be video! Saw Jeff Kristensen in the pits early last night, but I'm not sure if he was filming the race.
UN-BE-LIEV-ABLE drive by John Aden. Clearly the class of the field early in the main. First green, he passed 3 or 4 cars, only to have it taken away by a re-start. Next green, he quickly passed a couple...then shot into third. Going for second coming off of turn 2, he drove up the track and was barely clipped by the front bumper of the car he had just passed. The minor contact with the right-side edge of his rear bumper was all that it took to launch his car 90-degrees right and send him full-speed, head-on toward the wall on the back stretch. Miraculously, John somehow managed to keep in the gas pedal, man-handle the car into a beautiful 360-degree spin, and keep going without slamming the wall...and only lost the spot he had just taken! He may have brushed it, but no apparent damage was seen by my post-race inspection. He then reeled in the leaders and was a clear favorite for a Danny-Sullivan-esque "spin-n-win", only to have a left-rear tire cut down (totally un-related to the earlier incident) and have his chances destroyed...REMARKABLE!

BTW...the drive by Dalten Gabbard in the heat was awesome! Too bad he had trouble early in the main event. Keep your eyes on this kid...looks like he's been successful in what's he's done so far in his career...

I'm pretty sure the flat was related as the right rear did climb the wall in the incident. Video will be up later this evening.
Correction: Although both rear tires climbed the wall, it was the left rear that went flat, not the right.

Not bad, not great. I think it is safe to say the biggest crowd for a 360 race at The PAS (back to the days when we ran VRA, Bandits and IMCA 360s).

Wow...my memory is getting bad...I had remembered John Aden going for second, but instead he was actually passing Martin. It happened so fast, I didn't realize that he had as much contact with the wall as he did...seems like all 4 corners kissed the concrete...maybe the LR suffered more than I thought. Regardless, it is still spectacular to watch again on video!

Some great racing! We had a lot of fun. Everybody from California was great, and as far as I am concerned, the action was every bit as good as a 410 show. The more we run there the faster we will get, too. I know we learned a lot for next time, and we will be that much faster. I am sure the other teams feel the same way. Anybody that didn't make the show because they thought it would not be as good as a 410 show missed out. Make sure you come next time.

You can factor .5 to .7 seconds difference from the top teams of each class and that will get you close.
