"The Boss" Will Lead the Skyrockets to Town!
Mr. Skyrocket himself -- Kelly Shryock -- will lead the Sky-rockers into Houston looking to add 3 new feathers to his cap. I'd attempt to list all of Kelly's credentials on here but I'm afraid that it would use up all the remaining electrons on the internet so we'll just let that go for now. Trust me, he's good. (duh, no kidding Hook!)
Coming with him from Iowa is the young man who perhaps has come the closeset to keeping Shryock from winning anyone of his eight USMTS championships. Zack VanderBeek took full advantage of The Hunt format last year and actually had the point lead with just 3 races to go. This former USMTS RotY will be one to watch in the Skyrocket #33Z.
Rolling in from Sunnyvale, Texas will be the hottest driver at Cowtown Speedway in early 2007. Clyde Dunn, Jr. drove his Dunn Motorsports/Smiley's Racing Skyrocket #88 to the opening night Modified win and then came back to win the last 2 Mod features there in a row. Cowtown's a 1/4 mile folks. Don't count the kid out!
Also in a Dunn Motorports Skyrocket will be the guy we call Mr. DFW -- and when it comes to winning in nearly every class at nearly every dirt track in the metroplex area, Tim Clonch has earned the title. The 2005 $3500 Southern Challenge winner at Abilene Speedway is looking to Mr. Houston for a weekend!
Chris Brown is one of the local hopes for Skyrocket Chassis. Brown has won three times at HRP already in 2007 and he won the mod feature this past Saturday and also finished second in the SUPR Late Model feature. Brown has a knack of making big money A mains at the Batesville Speedway in Arkansas too.
Another 105 Speedway feature winner in 2007 is Skyrocket driver David Horner. Horner's been close to some good finishes on the road too. He seems to run particularly well at Thunder Mountain Motor Speedway in Rusk.
There may be more, but that's a stout half-dozen Sky-rocketeers right there!
Will the Texas Dirt Works Defend the Home Turf?
Hard to argue with a list that starts off with Howard Willis. Howard has been proving for years what a racer he is and it would use up his share of "Internet Electrons" too. How about Howard winning the first night up at TMS with 200 cars there back in March! The calender may say his 60 but he races like he's still 30!
Russell Moore scored the win at Gator on 4-14. Russell runs The Driving School with Howard and Missouri Dirt Works employee Andy Claiborne as the instructors at Gator. Their next school date with spots avalailable is May 12th & 13th. There are also dates available in the fall. We've already got word that Andy has a ride for these shows. Lots & lots of Midwest big show wins on Claiborne's resume.
But this may not all be left up to the Houston guys. Coming down from the Piney Woods will be Steve "BigDaddyCash" Crane and Duane Neel. Crane is a longtime Dirt Works distributor and a winning veteran Modified & I-Stock campaigner. Coming with him will be Duane Neel who has a bunch of wins in places like Rusk, Winnona & Kilgore, Texas. He also had a second to Armstrong at 105 earlier this year.
Pete Sagmiller has won at all these tracks before and already has a Gator win this year. Darry Seals is another guy with plenty of wins and plenty of laps at these tracks. Corey Neal is a winning Street Stock racer who has shown promise at a couple of Modified shows that I've seen run at including one at ArkLaTex last fall. I used to watch Robert Metz race at Leesville pretty regular and he's had his share of good finishes too. And that brings us to our buddy Brian who when he gets tired of winning races, has a career as a promoter on the horizon! We're all pulling for you to make a couple of these A mains Brian!
What do you all hear from the Tracy Denby Sr. & Jr. camp? Are they coming? Are they still in DWs?
I don't know if they have any plans of going are not, but BJ Robinson is winning again but now he's in a Dirt Works. He had been a Shaw for quite a while but came out with a new DW this year. He scored the win in a real good race at ArkLaTex Saturday night. BJ could do well in Houston if they are ready to travel like that again. Another Dirt Works winner Saturday night was Casey Jordan at Texas DIRT. Jordan is always one of the faster DWs anywhere he races but I don't know if he can make any of these this weekend. We might get to see him at the Murphrey Memorial on May 5th though.
Hoffman H2 Chassis on the Way to Houston Too!
Rodney Stanford -- part of that Stanford Trucking Racing Team operation out of Friso, Texas -- plans on coming and bringing a teammate to run the Houston USMTS shows. I've seen that bunch show up with 5 cars sometimes! Stanford drove his Hoffman H2 to a runner-up at Texas DIRT Saturday night. Another Stanford Trucking racer last year, Blaine Shives had some wins and good finishes in his Hoffman as well.
Other big time Hoffman guys like Jesse Stovall and the builder himself, Jerry Hoffman will be racing in Lebanon, Missouri.
I read where Troy Taylor may be coming. Is he still in a Smiley's or something else now? It seems like he had another chassis at Enid. I knew which on April 1st because he told me but I didn't write it down but he has that Hot Chassis Limited and with all three shows paying $1000 to win in that, look out for Troy in both classes. He swept the Enid Limiteds.
What about Henry Witt? Been kind of quiet over there in central Texas about these races. You guys got anybody coming?
David Smith II? Skyrocket, right?
What About GRTs?
Well, if they're racing Mods this week, I'm sure Terry Phillips & Jeremy Payne will run Lebanon. Johnny Virden? He's about half-way between the two but I don't how much traveling the TMS Pro-Cuts winner is doing this year.
Now, Brent Nicholas was running the brand last year. Is that what Brent is still in? He had a win at HRP last year.
I have not heard from the Kyle Pleasant GRT camp yet either.
Another GRT running well here in Louisiana is John Williams in a J&J Racing GRT and at times, Jeremy Haddox has had good runs too. He made the trip to McAllen in 2005. Don't know if either will come though.
John-O will have the Hot Chassis and wouldn't it be big for them again if he can beat this crowd at one of these shows. Already won at 105 & Motorama this year as well as the Big Star Classic at Sabine in LA.
How about hometowner Phil Dixon in his Fast Chassis? Will Phil be on hand? He's got plenty of wins at these tracks.
Mark Smith? Texas UMP Champion. Speedarama Champion. Surely Mark will have that #7G on hand, eh? (no, I don't think Steve Arpin is coming.)
How about the Dust Devils? Jared Herring and who else?
