Chris Henigan of Marshall, Texas drove his Career Search Kraft Kar Chassis to the opening night win at Sabine Motor Speedway on Friday night. It was his second Friday night win in-a-row as last week, Henigan won at Dixie Speedway in Farmerville, LA and lapped up to the fourth place car there. With 23 cars on hand at Sabine, the 22-plus car count bonus kicked in so Chris's win was worth $750.
After finishing 2nd to Joel Couvillion in their heat race, Henigan had to start sixth in the feature. There were several restarts in the Mods but when they finally got a lap in, Couvillion had the lead over pole sitter Jamie Burford. Both drivers run TRE Chassis. One of the restarts happened after Wes Armstrong spun his TRE in front of the pack and elimated his own #5 along with 15-year old Cade Dillard, D.J. Caskey in the former Jason Ingalls IRP Chassis and Kyle Hilliard who had finished 2nd in his own heat earlier.
As Burford and Couvillion led, Henigan made his way to third and then passed Burford for second. Burford went to the outside (surprised?) and tried to rally back but spun out and had to go back to 15th place for the restart. Henigan then worked his way under Couvillion and took the lead. Derrick Grigsby had a strong run going and earlier won the Street Stock feature but while running third in this one, either clipped the infield berm or a skidder tire, spun and gave himself a left front flat that took him from contention. Henigan went on to a rather easy win while Couvillion had to fend off a rallying Burford to keep second. Burford rebounded for a third.
The Limited Modifieds put a real good show and with 28 cars on hand, the winner got $600. The Limiteds put 12 green flag laps in the books, then 11 more & then went green-white-checker to conclude their 25-lap event with just the 2 cautions. Jamie Burford started his Hot Chassis in fourth and on lap 14, battled past early leader Darrell McGee to take the lead and the win. Bob Kellogg rallied from deep in the pack to challenge McGee for 2nd or 3rd at the time but the pair had contact on lap 22 which gave both cars flats and also took out Todd Fredieu who was trying for a top five himself. Edward Oakes drove the Flynn Racing #83 Hot Chassis normally driven by Howard Willis (who was finishing fourth in a SUPR Late Model in Batesville) to a runner-up finish. Chris McDonald, Dustin Shoemaker and Dewayne Shoemaker rounded out the top five.
In the most exciting finish of the night, Rodney Howell pulled along side of Keith Kay in the final corner and beat him to the flag by a bumper in the Pure Stock feature. Jason Tousek won the Mini Stocks.
The Limited Modified & Pure Stock features were real good while the Modifieds and the Street Stocks did not get off to the best of starts on what was a real cold night all over the south. The track was in great shape and with promoter John Higgenbottom suffering a heart attack in midweek that left him hospitalized, it took a bunch of volunteers to get the track ready to race. From Ronny Brumeloh to John Davis to David Osborne to Jim Burford for the grater and several others, a big thanks. Get well soon Mr. John, we miss you and Sabine Motor Speedway needs you for sure!
