(JANUARY 11, 2010, RIVERSIDE, CA) After ten years away from the sport he loves, driver Billy Felts Jr. will make a return to Sprint Car Racing in the USAC/CRA Series and at the Victorville Auto Raceway in 2010. The second-generation drivers first race will be at the annual Copper on Dirt at USA Raceway in Tucson, Arizona on February 19th and 20th.
Felts, the son of longtime West Coast Sprint Car and Midget star Billy Felts Sr., had brief fling in Sprint Car racing in the 1990s. In addition to the promise the now 35-year old father of two showed in a Sprint Car, he also excelled in Midgets and won a USAC Western Midget event at the Bakersfield Speedway. In this season of, "returning to my racing roots," the Riverside resident will be driving a car owned by the legendary Southern California Gardner Motorsports team.
While Felts has been away from Sprint Car racing for the past decade, he has been heavily involved in racing. From 1997 through 2003, he was the factory tuner and engine builder at Kawasaki for Motocross legend and now NASCAR driver Ricky Carmichael. Felts career began as a confident five-year old in BMX. He stayed in BMX, where he was a J.M.C. Factory rider with his own model frame and forks, until age nine. He was the youngest ever rider to triple (win all three classes) at the BMX Grand National and won numerous national and state championships.
Felts got into Junior Speedway Motorcycle racing when he was nine and was quickly named the Most Up and Coming Rider. He also was the youngest rider ever to finish on the podium at the Junior National Speedway Championship and was a Junior Speedway Best Pairs Champion.
As a young teen, Felts took on Motocross racing and over the years raked in wins and championships including 80cc and 125cc GNC National championships, two Trans Cal 80cc titles and Mammoth Mountain 500cc champion. In the mid 1990s, he raced Mini Sprints for two years and won a Rookie of the Year award and the 1993 SCCMA championship.
Felts did get a handful of 410 Sprint Car races in during 2009 with a season best fifth place finish at the year ending race at Victorville Auto Raceway.
