A few thoughts from Manzanita on Saturday night:

The track was very, very fast. Robin and I had seats a little closer to turn one than usual. It is interesting to watch the cars settle in on the cushion. Joey, Donny, Pittman and Tim really had their cars dialed in. The cars made such as smooth transition into the corner and they were really able to keep up the momentum and roll through.

I'm not sure if I like the new format. It seemed that the racing really didn't start until the dash. There were only a couple of passes in heat races and they looked a little more like hot lap sessions. After the heats the intensity level finally kicked up. Tim had some sort of mechanical issue during the dash and finished last. I think this might have cost him the win. He was closing on Donny in the feature but ran out of time.

There are certainly two levels of cars this year. There are those who were on their game and there are those who are missing it. Chad Hiller and Dion Hindi are good drivers stuck in cars that are somewhat underwhelming. I will say that Becca Anderson coming along rather well. It wouldn't surprise me to see her win a race or two this year.

The fans in Arizona just don't understand winged sprint car racing. I guess it's because we see winged sprint cars on the half mile about as often as an open lane on 101 during rush hour. There were a lot of people in the house but they just didn't know who to cheer for. All I can say is that we miss the enthusiasm of Chico and Placerville. We were also disappointed that there wasn't anyone to report from the pits. It would've been nice to know a little bit of the inside scoop. Bobby where were you? I know I've said this before but I think too often the announcers take for granted that the crowd understands what's going on behind the scenes or even with the format. It almost makes us want to move back to California. Just kidding!

John Stanbrough is worth the price of admission. He flew in to drive in the midget race. Unfortunately, he was taken out by his teammate in the feature. You could really tell who the true pro was in the race. Chad Boat is the real deal. He might just be 15 years old but he handles his race car like an experienced veteran. This will be his third year competing at Manzanita in the midget division.

Remarkably, we were able to get out of the track by 10:30. This is a very rare occurrence at Manzanita Speedway. All in all, it was a nice to get out to the races. It reminded Robin and I of all the good times we spent in California running all over the state. It also reminded us on how quickly time can pass. I'm very jealous and I believe that you are all truly spoiled to have such great facilities, announcers and competitors throughout the state. I'm sure I'll find time to make it over to catch a couple races this year.

I hope you are all well and I wish you the best this weekend in Chico.

Kerry

Bobby, I lived on Pontiac Drive, and later Gunter Way when I was a kid. Would have gone to Oak Grove if I stayed on Pontiac, Santa Teresa if I stayed on Gunter. What year did you graduate?

Larry,

How about Charlie Ball being elected at the national convention? Who would've known that we were rubbing shoulders with greatness 20 years ago? Although I think I rubed shoulders with him under better circumstances.

Phi Tau forever.
