Elliott NCRA Sport Mod Master at Brill
Robert Elliott of Clinton, Oklahoma muscled his way into the lead in turns three and four of the first lap and led the entire distance on his way to victory as the O'Reilly/NCRA sport modified division made their first ever appearance at Brill Motor Speedway in Meeker, Oklahoma on Saturday night.
After a turn three pile up in turn three with five cars brought action to a temporary halt at the start, David Givens started on the pole for the 25 lap Cherokee Casino-Resort feature and jumped out into the lead as the green flag fell. Elliott, who has several non-sanctioned sport modified division victories in the region, moved up from his third starting position and worked his way underneath Givens in turns three and four to officially lead the first lap. Chad McNamara, who came into the night as the early season points leader, worked his way into the runner up position from his sixth starting spot while Mark Willson settled into third from his outside front row starting spot.
Elliott and his Dunsworth Machine powered Rocket Chassis would open a quick six car length lead by lap five while Donnie Raney, who won the season opener back in Marck at Elk City, worked his own #9R D&M chassis up from his eleventh starting position into the third position.
At the races midway point it was Elliott with a half stretch lead over McNamara with Raney, Willson and Givens in comfortable position.
The only caution of the night, after the pile up on the original start, came on lap fourteen when Willson got spun in turn four.
On the final restart there was no catching Elliott as even lapped traffic never slowed the pace on his way to a half stretch victory. " That was fun, I love this series," exclaimed Elliott in victory lane. " I knew that we had to get out front as quick as we could and it worked out for us. Lapped cars gave me a little problem but that is what happens sometimes."
McNamara held on to finish second and that, coupled with Raneys third place finish set up a tie for the series points lead. Frank Graven finished fourth while Ross McCartney rounded out the top five.
The eight lap heat races for the forty car field were won by Elliott, Gravens, Kevin Snow, Don Chesser and Mark Robinson. The two "B" features were won by Nick Schenberger and Kenny Morris.
Next up for the O'Reilly/NCRA sport modifieds is this coming Saturday night (June 6) at Caney Valley Speedway in Caney, Kansas.
