WOOD WINNER IN MOTORCYCLE HEADLINER AT VENTURA

VENTURA, Calif. (April 11, 2009) – Jimmy Wood emerged from an early-race scramble with the lead and spent the remainder of the event increasing his advantage before winning the Pro Modern Open main event of the Outlaw Motorcycle Races at Ventura Raceway.

The Pro Modern was one of 14 classes at the track. The two-wheel spectacular drew 116 entries.

Wood, of Redlands, was the third rider to lead a lap in the first three laps. Madera’s Michael Avila led the first lap and Ventura’s Kayl Kolkman led the second. A rare red flag briefly stopped the festivities after the third lap, but on the restart Wood again grabbed the lead and began pulling away.

Kolkman finished second and Avila was third in the 20-lap feature.

Donnie Harrell, Visalia, won the Amateur Modern open race.

Culver City’s Joe Pape earned a crowd-pleasing victory when he finished first in the Hooligan/Chopper main event. Choppers do not readily lend themselves to oval, dirt track racing and the crowd enjoyed Pape’s effort.

Ventura Raceway is dark April 25. The VRA Sprint Cars are scheduled to compete at Bakersfield Speedway that night. The next race at Ventura will be May 2.

More information about Ventura Raceway is available at www.venturaraceway.com.

Lincoln Park Speedway

By CAREY FOX Times Sports Editor

PUTNAMVILLE, IN — The weather finally broke and dirt track racing took over the state this weekend and Lincoln Park Speedway was part of the action. The track was in great shape, smooth and tacky to the end and the competition was tough as 24 sprinters unloaded at the Putnamville oval for the season’s opening night after wet conditions claimed the regularly scheduled opener. Defending track champion, Billy Puterbaugh, was back and showed off his beautiful, brand new black and red No. 71. Looking around the pits at LPS, there wasn’t a shabby sprinter to be found as hot shoes like Brent Beauchamp, Kent Christian, Shane Hollingsworth, Casey Shuman and Ty Deckard were in attendance and a couple of rising youngsters were looking to make their marks with a trip to victory lane. Todd Kimmell was one of those young pilots looking for his first win and he was coming off an impressive third-place run at Bloomington Speedway the night before. Chase Briscoe finished the 2008 season with his first sprint win of his very short career in the class and was looking for No. 2. Add in Kenny Niflis and the competition was bound to be hot in the season kicker. Jon Sciscoe came out of the gates well on Friday night, claiming a seventh-place on the red clay at Bloomington. On Saturday, he continued to keep the pedal mashed, pulling away for a win in the first heat. The Bloomington-based pilot held off the No. 5J of Joss Moffatt and Shane Hollingsworth with Timmell and Niflis rounding the top-five.. Kent Christian wasn’t to be outdone in heat two, he tackled the circuit with a fever and was able to hold off a spirited attack by Beauchamp and Josh Cunningham followed by Puterbaugh. The third heat of the night went to Shuman, whose success on opening night is well documented at LPS. Deckard crossed in second followed by A.J. Clark and the gorgeous No. 32 First Financial Bank machine of Chase Stockton of Sullivan. Jason Holt was the B-main winner, earning a spot in the back of the field for the A-Main. As the green dropped on the opening A-Main, Christian had the hammer down and held a tentative lead over Shuman and Beauchamp. A.J. Clark was in the mix early ahead of Sciscoe and Hollingsworth. A three-way battle developed early on between Christian, Shuman and Beauchamp, but Shuman wasn’t going to be denied. He darted into the lead, riding the cushion into turn three to get past Christian. With multiple lines available to the drivers, sprinters were comfortable competing three-wide, slinging sideways through the corners in pursuit of an extra position. Beauchamp followed in Shuman’s wake to take over the second spot. Behind the group, Kimmell and Hollingsworth were dueling wheel-to-wheel for several laps, darting through some lapped traffic in a chase for the leaders. Moffatt was in contention with the leaders as well, holding down a fifth-place position past the halfway mark as JJ Hughes brought out a caution when he bounced off an infield tire marker. The restart had Shuman leading with Beauchamp, Christian, Sciscoe and Moffatt in to. Shuman got out to a quick jump on the restart and he wasn’t going to be caught in a well-run A-main that clicked off quickly. Shuman claimed the victory in the Clifford’s Custom Collision, Physical Medicine, Keicher Engines, U.S. Automation machine also sponsored by Geiger Seamless Guttering. The Arizona-based hotshoe is no stranger to opening victories as he claimed night one last season in Putnamville. Beauchamp remained in the second spot followed by Christian, Moffatt, Hollingsworth, Sciscoe, Kimmell, Deckard, Puterbaugh and Cunningham in the top-10. Holt raced his way up from 16th-starting spot to 11th at the checkers. Nineteen tough modifieds unloaded at LPS on Saturday night in search of adding a victory in the opener and gaining a foothold in the season points. Daryl Herbert was one driver looking to change some unfortunate luck in the early stages of the season. The Greensburg, Ind. competitor mentioned that he hadn’t been able to finish any of the previous several races due to a variety of mechanical issues. His luck changed Saturday when he held off early challenges from Travis Shoulders and survived a battle of attrition to claim the victory. Herbert won his heat race to set himself up outside of row one alongside Wayne Cooper, who claimed the second heat. On the green, Herbert jumped into the top spot followed closely by Shoulders, Phil VanSant and Cooper. The group quickly found their way into lapped traffic and both Herbert and Shoulders continued to skillfully weave through backmarkers while still remaining in a battle with each other. Defending track champion, Paul Bumgardner, was sidelined as a tire went down, ending his night with a 16th-place finish. He wasn’t alone as Mark Auler, Robert Albright, Tom McKinney and Mike Trimble went to the pits early. Near the midway point, Gary Hall and Jaymie Turner got locked up bumper-to-bumper to bring out an extended caution. On the restart, Kenny Weaver was quickly sidelined and Shoulders’ pursuit of a win went by the wayside with something broken in the right front side of his No. 166. With Shoulders out, Herbert pulled away in the SPEC Racing, Stone’s Farm Service, R&S Fleet Service, VanHorn Graphics and Prince Excavating machine. Cooper crossed the finish line in second ahead of Albert Gardner, Harold Grayless, Hall, Josh Fagg, Carlos Bumgardner Sr. came from 16th to seventh ahead of Jared Hix and VanSant. The 2008 season was all about near misses for Kris Starks in the super stock division, seemingly always near the front, but narrowly missing that elusive trip to Victory Lane. On Saturday, he was able to hold off a determined Greg Amick, a four-time winner last season. Starks also had to maintain the lead after several restarts to earn the victory as Kenny Carmichael Jr. charged to third ahead of Scott Carrington, Joe Starks, Travis Heramb, Mark Dickerson, Dennis Morgan, Michael Conner and Roy Bruce Jr. Starks win came in the Franklin-built No. 26 superstock. A very balanced bomber field was in contention for victory on Saturday night with Ron Smith, Ben Williams and Ryan Freeland claiming heat victories in the 23-car field. Freeland and Smith started on the front row ahead of Williams and Ron Wallen Sr. Williams got out to a strong start on the rest of the field with Freeland close behind. Moody and Wallen had an entertaining side-by-side tussle going for several laps before Dustin Shoulder entered the fray late in the feature. Shoulders came up from his 11th-place starting spot to eventually slip by Freeland for second-place. Ron Wallen Jr. started in 10th-place and battled through traffic to take fifth behind his father. Moody placed sixth ahead of LeRoy Sherfield, Kelly West Jr., Daylan Chambers and Jordan Almanza. Next week will feature the sprints along with UMP Modifieds, UMP Super Stocks and bombers. Main gates open at 4:30 p.m. with hotlaps at 5:30 p.m. and racing beginning at 7 p.m. Kids five-and-under are free with ages 6-10 just $5. Adult general admission is $13. Saturday will be Salute to Greencastle Night with Greencastle residents with state-issued ID receiving $2 off admission.

Opening Night at Vermilion County Speedway Big Hit

For Immediate Release

OAKWOOD, IL — There were new faces, new changes and old faces in new classes in Saturday’s first night of action at the Vermilion County Speedway. By Marvin Holman

Under new promoter Joe Spiker, the big two changes were two new classes with the non-wing sprints and the Crate late models and in the sprint race, Riverton’s Mike Hess beat out top drivers and a rain delay to get his first win at VCS.

For Hess, it was his second win in two days.

“We won at Jacksonville on Friday,” Hess said. “This is my second year racing sprints after 12 years in midgets and I didn’t win anything last year, so this was a good start.”

Hess said he would be back and he hoped that more racers and more spectators will continue to fill the seats.

“I just hope the community will stay behind it,” Hess said. “This is a nice track and they have done a good job with the place. They just have to work out a few bugs and it will be great.”

For the most part, sprint racers who had never been at the track were very impressed with the track.

“It reminded me of midget tracks I used to race in,” Ricky Williams from Akron, Ohio said. “There are no non-wing races near where I live, do I drive at Bloomington, Ind. on Fridays. But we will be back here because we like this track.”

Randy Shuman, a former VCS champion in UMP modifieds, got the first win at late models and said that he will have a lot to learn with the new class.

“This car is almost like the sportsman class but it has wider wheels,” Shuman said. “We are going to go back to the garage and fix what needs to be done for next week.”

Shuman and Tim Rivers were battling early in the race, but an apparent bump knocked Rivers out of contention.

“I think what happened was that we just bumped tires,” Shuman said. “I was shocked that they didn’t give him his spot back and after the race I talked to him about it and we are good friends so everything was settled.”

In the UMP modified race, former David Richardson Memorial winner Chad Kinder returned to VCS and got the win.

Kinder almost wasn’t in contention in the first lap after trying to go to the top of the track, but a caution negated the lap and Kinder went to the bottom and cruised from there.

“When that happened I knew now to try it again,” Kinder said. “Everyone was wondering who was going to win in this first race with this new promoter so we decided to go and try to win.”

For Kinder, a veteran with many big wins, he said he will be willing to spend a few more Saturdays at VCS this season.

“They may have the best payoffs in the area now and that is great,” Kinder said. “But there is always great competition and the track is the same and it always a good track.

“So we I am not committed to any other races in the area, we will try to come down here as much as we can.”

Scott Dunlap’s first race at VCS was a memorable one as he won the street stock race.

“This track reminds me of the old Sullivan, Ind. track we used to run at,” Oblong’s Dunlap said. “I usually race at the Flora Speedway but it hasn’t opened yet, so we went out here and we will return.”

Danville veteran Jack Dowers, who was second in last year’s pure stock title run, started the year with a win in a feature that was halted early because of rain. James Buyno was second and defending champion Gordon Parsons, Jr. was third.

The Turbines, Inc.Sprints, Wright Motor Company Crate late models, Toyota of Danville UMP modifieds, The Auto Connection Street Stocks and The

Route 1 Auto Repair Pure Stocks will return next week at VCS and it will be Champaign/Urbana day at the track. Residents of Champaign and Urbana with valid identification will get $2 off the $10 general admission. Hot laps are at 5:30 p.m. and racing will start at 7 p.m.

SHORT, CLARK, and DEMOSS CLAIM BLOOMINGTON SPEEDWAY OPENING NIGHT VICTORIES

By: Chris Nunn

Bloomington, IN- April 17, 2009- One week after Mother Nature decided to put a damper on racing action at the Speedway, sunny skies prevailed giving racers and fans alike a perfect evening for motorsports. A total of 45 Safety-Kleen Non Winged Sprint Cars, 21 Tire and Wheel Center UMP Super Stocks, and 22 O'Neal Wood Products UMP Modifieds made for a full schedule of racing action. The chase for the 2009 Bloomington Speedway points championship began with two of the three defending champions absent from action. Dickie Gaines, the non winged Sprint Car defending champion, and Jeremy Hines, the defending UMP Super Stock champion were not in action Friday night.

The 25Lap Safety-Kleen Sprint Car feature started with Todd Kimmel and Donnie Gentry leading the field to the green flag. Kimmel led the field around to lead lap one with Ricky Williams and Jeff Bland Jr in tow. Kimmel began to stretch out his lead at the lap five mark, holding a half straight lead over Bland, who took second away from Williams on lap four. Behind them, Brady Short had worked his way up from the tenth starting position to battle with Scott Hampton for the fourth spot. Action would be stopped on lap nine, as Chase Briscoe flipped in turn four. When racing resumed, Kimmel held his line on the bottom and put some distance between he and Bland as they completed lap ten. Back to Short, as he moved around Williams for the third spot on lap 12, and then around Bland on lap 13 for second. Unfortunately for Kimmel, the yellow would fly on lap 14, as Nick Bilbee spun off of turn four. This would allow the hard-charging Short to restart behind Kimmel. On the restart, Short shot around Kimmel going into turn two to take the lead, and immediately opened up a seven car length advantage over Kimmel before the yellow flew again for Bilbee on lap 16. Short opened up another advantage on the restart over Kimmel and Bland, only to see the red flag fly on lap 17 for Andrew Prather, who flipped in turn one. Also involved in the incident were Ethan Barrow and Billy Puterbaugh. On the restart, Bland shot around Kimmel for the second position and set his sights on Short. With five laps to go, Short held almost a half straight advantage over Bland and Kimmel. As the laps wound down, Short went unchallenged to take the checkers in his Indiana Stoneworks/Short Trucking/Simpson/Athenia Mason Supply sponsored #36. The win marked the first on the season for the Bedford, IN native. Rounding out the top five were Bland Jr., Kimmel, Hampton, and Thomas Meseraull. The Sprint Mart Hard Charger award went to Brent Beauchamp, who started 21st and finished 6th.

In preliminary action Ricky Williams, Ryan Hamilton, Scott Hamilton, Todd Kimmel, and Bobby East picked up heat race wins. The B-Mains went to Ethan Barrow and Nick Bilbee

Gerald Todd and Troy Clark made up the front row for the Tire and Wheel Center Super Stock main event. Todd led lap one with Clark, Brad Cummings, and Clayton Perry in line behind him. Cummings worked his way under Clark to battle for the second spot on lap three. The duo caught up to Todd to make it a three way battle for the lead by lap six. Clark snagged the lead from Todd using the high side, putting him back to second, with Cummings third. Action would slow on lap eight for the stalled car of Kyle Zike. Clark used the restart to open up a half straight lead over the now battling duo of Cummings and Todd for second. Cummings took the second spot away from Todd as the field took the halfway signal. Todd then lost the third spot to Clayton Perry on lap 13. With less than ten laps to go, Clark would enter lapped traffic, allowing Cummings and Perry to close in. With five to go, Clark put the lapped car of Larry Booher between he and Cummings, allowing some breathing room for the remainder of the race. With Clark safely out front, Perry moved under Cummings to vie for the second position. Perry took the spot with one lap to go. Up front, however, it was all Clark taking the win in his Hills Historic Painting/Hersche Performance Engines/Wedan Street and Performance/Gumm Chassis #95c. Rounding out the top five were Perry, Cummings, Greg Amick, and Marty Cooper.

Heat race wins went to Gerald Todd, Brad Cummings, and Marty Cooper

Kent Robinson shot to the lead at the outset of the O'Neal Wood Products UMP Super Stock feature, and by lap three held almost a full straight lead over Brad Barrow and John Demoss. Barrow and Demoss ran side by side for the second spot, before Barrow grabbed the spot outright on lap four. Demoss then moved back under Barrow for the spot on lap five. This left Barrow to try to fend off the other pair of the Demoss brothers, Clint for third. Clint used his trademark bottom groove to move under Demoss for third. Unfortunately for Clint, the yellow flew on lap eight, nullifying his pass. The field completed one lap before the caution flew for Dustin Christie, who spun on the frontstrech. Another yellow would bring back the restart once again as Daryl Herbert and Bradley Sterrett got together in turn four. The restart attempt was brought back once again, as Mike Trimble spun in turn two. Attempt number three at the lap nine restart was successful, as Robinson and John Demoss pulled away from the field. One lap was complete before the yellow flew on lap ten for Bennie Smith Jr, and Trimble in turn two. Robinson and John Demoss battled for the lead on the restart, with Demoss taking the lead from Robinson at the halfway mark. Robinson moved to the highside to try to get the lead back away from Demoss, but Demoss was too strong on the bottom. Behind the lead duo, Clint Demoss and Barrow waged their war for third once again. This time with Demoss grabbing the third spot from Barrow. Barrow then saw Josh Eads go by after making contact with Barrow's left front. Barrow then pulled into the infield with a broken left front. At the front, it was all John Demoss cruising to the win in his Hoosier Drywall Specialist/Grandma Rachel/Bender Lumber/Erwins Drywall sponsored #79D. Rounding out the top five were Robinson, Clint Demoss, Eads, and Derek Groomer.

Heat race wins went to Josh Eads, John Demoss, and Kent Robinson with the B-Main going to Jacoby Hines.

Next Friday night will see the “Spring Clash” for the Safety-Kleen Sprint Cars paying $3,000 to win, and $300 to start plus lap prize money. Tire and Wheel Center UMP Super Stocks paying $600 to win, and O'Neal Wood Products UMP Modifieds paying $700 to win will make up the entire racing program.
