ADA — After 15 years of weekend adrenaline, the Oklahoma Sports Park is about to embark on another year of stock car racing in Ada, Oklahoma.

The OPS, 10 miles West of Ada, has been providing the community with as much moving metal as they can handle every Saturday night from April through September. OSP owner George Welch is excited about the upcoming season.

After the initial weekends of testing and tuning, which began yesterday and will resume next Saturday, the 2009 racing season will begin on April 3-4 with the Spring Fling 2009. May 16-17 will be the Harold Leep, Jr. Memorial, along with the Oil Capital Racing Series sprinters, which has drawn interest from racers across the country.

“I’ve had people calling me from Texas, Kansas, and as far away as Indianapolis wanting to come to this thing. We’re going to make it an annual event,” Welch said.

The sprint race cars that will be at this event are a sight to behold, he said.

“What’s really wild about the sprint cars, when they show up, is when they drive off into a turn they never lift off the throttle. They keep it flat on the floor all the way around the race track,” Welch said. “Their cars only weigh 1400 pounds and they’re pulling probably 650 horse. On the straightaway, if they get a good bite, they can actually pull the front wheels plumb off the ground. That’s a show.”

The track features races in many other classes, including pure stock, factory stock, sport mods, street stock, and modified. Despite the restrictions on some of these vehicle classifications, all of them will be powerful machines, capable of kicking up dirt and turning heads.

“They’ll be clipping up there about 130 miles per hour, and if you think about that on a 4/10 of a mile dirt track, that’s something to see.”

Welch is confident that anyone who makes it to the track to give it a chance will be hooked.

“It gets in your blood,” he said.

Let me tell ya, George is a straight shooter. I know every single promoter out there has some kind of complaint against them, they all do, but this guy has earned everything he has the hard way.
