Local groups often speak of the "economic impact" or "dollars to the community" that a major football bowl game contributes to a region. Has anyone ever estimated in millions, the short term "economic impact" the Chili Bowl has on Tulsa. Curious as to how deep into eight figures the number goes.

no matter how big the number is, I bet many in the tulsa area do not really understand or care, so make sure that the gas stations, stores, or wherever you buy anything to let them know you are in town for the races. I always mention even on weekly shows so the places you spending money at know you are in the area because of the races, most comunities are not doing near what they should to be helping the tracks

As stated in a Tulsa World article from last years Chilibowl, the estimated impact was 10 to 12 Million. 82% of attendies were from out of state. With the exception of the yearly state fair it is the largest attended event at expo square and a guaranteed money maker. Now if the fair trust would get rid of the event that looses the most money, (Fair Meadows, Horse races) and replace it with a much needed weekly dirt track facility, they could make even more money.

Could just be NASCAR fans dumping their tickets when they found out Stewart's not racing... wink

thats funny, maybe they think tony stewart not racing the 500 this year either was reading where they have approximately 58,000 seats available yet and have reduced price of many $99 seats to $55

Like a friend of mine said Footbal people tail gate for one day... Race fans tail gate for a week and sometimes a month like at Indy.

The impact of a Race is not seen by everyone because you dont here the local news ,sports on TV talking about the race results. They might at the CB but at local races and even the bigger races at the local tracks dont get time on the sports at 10 20 pm like they do other sports.I dont think they realize that there are more race fans than any other. .Or it might be that a High School or Local college isnt for profit. And a Race track is.

The Chilli Bowl is a for sure great money maker fot the Bussness in Tulsa . Thank God for the extra Motels that set half empty most of the year. They get used during the Chilli Bowl.

Win as if you are use to it.And lose as if you enjoyed
it for a change. Its hard to get to the top and alot
harder to stay there.

Thanks for the feedback. Using rough numbers, the $10 to $12 Million in the economy for the one week show contributes about 50 to 60 full time (equivilant) jobs for one year in the Tulsa area. Not bad in this economy.

filtair - i think you are pretty close to hittin the nail on the head - for folks like us "hosers" just there to see the best racing in the world in the entire 2009 calendar year - its actually pretty damn cool. i just love the thought of the upper class bastards with their now obselete home depot jackets - with a look of bewilderment on their faces. lol.

redbandana - as for the hotels. check this shit out. i called my hotel 2 nights ago - just had a feeling to make sure everything was cool with it. call the #......disconnected. call Ramada Inn HQ's - they dont show this hotel in tulsa. conformation # and everything else in hand - i proceed to lambast this bitch (and she was). i had to call the Days Inn on 49th and Yale - and ask them if they were familiar with the area - she said she was - and that that particular hotel shutdown a few weeks ago. so there i was like a dumbass - no room for the Bowl. now granted - push comes to shove - no big deal. I live just west ok Oklahoma City - and i have family in Tulsa. anyhow - i start calling all the closest places. predictable answers everytime. i end up calling that same Days Inn - and 45 min. before i called someone called and cancelled a double bed room. i was very unlucky with what happened with Ramada - and very lucky with gettina room even closer to the Expo - and for less too actually.

but the point is. i talked to these bastards on December 11th - and they were closed within 2 weeks. it pisses me off i was never contacted. i could almost guarantee i wasnt the only one with this problem - granted i may have waited the longest to find out tho lol. but is it not ironic - that they close a mere days away from the biggest moneymaker of the year for them? they wait 4 more weeks to close - they make hella bank - then close with the profit. or more profit than when they did close. so i really wander. i cant imagine this event not being a heck of a hit for the local economy - but both the Ramada - and by other reports the Howard Johnson (?) - both at I-44 and Harvard - closed their doors recently. i just dont understand why they didnt stay open that extra few weeks - they woulda made some good profit out of it. and if things were not sustainable over the rest of the year - close your doors right after the bowl.

but ya know - f*ck Ramada. serves them punk bastards right to stupidly close when they did. i'm just giving an accurate accounting of events - as well as a rightful response to em. I'll stay in one of them run down muslim places before i stay at a f*ckin ramada again. but as they had my conformation # in their damn system - and then just sat there with their "uhhhh........'s" - the only thing worth conforming is that they can suck a fart out of my ass. they will never get a freakin penny from me again. even if there is some great race and they are the only hotel within hours. i'll sleep in my car or not go. worthless bastards.actually i will go ----- i'll just check in the room and deface the hell out of it. i'll get medievil on that damned room - I'll go at it "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" style!!!!!!!!! lol lol.. this sounds like a fun inebriated adventure.

Both hotels had to close. I-44 is getting a massive overhaul through that section of town. All stores, houses, and businesses lining the road between Lewis and Harvard are being torn down or moved.

I can't believe they made reservations for you to start with. All these business were given a least a year warning that they were being closed/baught out. pretty crappy.
