How is everybody? Been a while... Got a new laptop and am having some trouble navigating in Windows Media Player (jacking around before I leave tonight). Thought I'd stop in and say hello! If you have any advice on how to manipulate the media player so it allows me to view media and not just songs.... well, then... Had to click on the pop-up bar at the top to view the MSPN vs BRR video, but can't use the player. IT WAS FUNNY! Have a good one and I'll catch ya later! Can't wait until April for Knoxville! WOOHOO No more pictures to sell. I can finally watch a race after 9 yrs! PEACE, OUT!!

Microsoft makes me frown

They just released their latest money sucking OS, Vista, recently and the hype has begun about all the cool features. I ride to work in a vanpool with a programmer who was given a limited edition for evaluation and he says there are some things that look cooler than XP but there's no compelling reason to upgrade. We all know what's coming next though, don't we. In a year or two Microsoft the evil monopoly will stop issuing security patches for XP which will force people to spend $100's more dollars on yet another operating system that's being forced down our throats. The sad part is that so many people don't realize that there are other options available and keep sending their money to one of the biggest corporate giants in the world.

SAVE YOUR MONEY FOR RACING AND DUMP MS NOW!

My solution? Linux. I've got it on one of my computers and am working towards dumping Windows entirely. The open source community freely distributes thousands of free programs. Currently I'm using a distribution of Linux called Ubuntu but I'm probably going to go with one of the paid distributions. What I'm looking for is a Linux distribution that has all the video and audio codecs bundled with the install disc as well as an emulator to run select Windows programs that I still need. If I didn't have to run some photography and graphics specific Windows programs I'd have made the switch on both of our computers. Right now I've got my XP box networked to the Linux machine.

Windows...grrrrrrrr!!!! frown

Stan:

Vista was released on the 30th of Jan, bought my computer on the 1st of Feb. It has a LOT of cool features. Unfortunately, most of them I do not know how to operate as of yet. If you're going to buy the new operating system, you might as well spring the extra cash and just buy a new one with al the bells and whistles!!! But... nuff about that! :-) I need to spend some time on here reading up and seeing what's going on in the racing world as well as trying to see what some of my old friends are up to. Where the hell are you guys? LOL Any chat rooms around these days that everyone uses? Lemme know...

Both of my computers are Vista compatible but I wouldn't even consider buying another Microsoft OS. Linux has "all the bells & whistles", more than Windows users could ever begin to imagine. Windows users have taken the Microsoft "this is really cool and you have to have it" pitch hook, line and sinker.

The Linux community posts thousands of titles of free open source software. I use the free distribution Ubuntu on my wife's computer and it's got many features that are way better than anything Microsoft charges for. Linux is an offshoot of Unix as is the Mac OS and it's so stable and secure that you don't even have to run antivirus software. I know two people who run Linux on file servers and they haven't even had to reboot in a couple of years. Actually, the majority of your servers (basically the computers that host websites) I believe still use Linux because of the security and stability.

The only reason I'm investigating several paid distros is to find one with a good emulation program to run a couple of photography and graphics specific Windows applications. I could also put another hard drive in my computer and run a dual-boot system with both OS's so I can run my programs. I've got plenty of time because I don't have to do anything until Microsoft stops supporting XP.

Nope, the money to buy another MS OS isn't the issue.

Stan,

I think about 80% of the people here don't even know what you are talking about in regards to Vista. MS will always be the leader in the OS market so just bow down to Bill as King. There are lots of people who love Macs as well and I agree, Apple has some things that are much better than MS. I just wonder how long it will be before the law suits start with accusations that MS ripped off Apple in some its implemtation of Vista?

Vista is not ready for Prime Time yet and now they are making people pay for it to Beta test it. There's just not enough device drivers compatible with Vista yet so if you are upgrading, be prepared for lots of stuff to not work. I've been toying with Vista for almost 2 years now watching its developement and I can tell you, I won't put it on my primary systems yet. Half of my tools do not work!

In regards to Security updates for XP, MS will keep producing them for quite some time to come. I guarantee you most all Corporate entities will not embrace this OS for atleast 2-3 years down the road until 2 Service packs have been released. There is no fear for anyone to think they must run out and buy Vista or a new system that comes with Vista, XP will be there for long time to come. Hey, there are lots companies still using Windows 2000. Large corporations are one of the main reasons they keep supporting older Operating systems, its all about money!

Does anyone even remember Window ME? LOL What a joke that was.

That ME actually stands for "Missing Edition" Smile

I know that I'm not getting through to anybody Steve but I just switched over my wife's computer a couple of months ago after a rebuild and I'm trying to spread the word about Linux as an excellent alternative to MS. The Linux distribution I use worked right out of the box, found all my hardware and even had Open Office bundled with it. I'm sure you're familiar with the openoffice.org project, it's a free open office suite that is comparable to Microsoft Office. In addition to Open Office I use the following open source programs in both the Linux and Windows versions:

Juice...receive podcasts and download music.

Blender...3d modeling program.

Gimp...graphics editor comparable to photoshop.

Audacity & Lame...multi track recorder that I use to create a podcast.

Pan Newsreader...newsgroup reader.

All of these programs work as well if not better than Windows equivalents.

Windows users might want to check out a couple of other freeware programs that I use:

Avast antivirus (free for home use): never have to subscribe to Norton again.

Lavasoft Adware SE Personal edition...Free for home use, eliminates adware & spyware, also has online updates.

My motto, spend your money on racing, not on increasing the wealth of software giants!

Hey Kim! - haven't seen you since the 2001 Knoxville Nationals!! Hope your new laptop is everything you hoped it would be, I personnally HATE new operating systems, because they intentionally make all my printers, faxes, and periphial equipment obsolete by design shortly thereafter, Hell, I just recovered from the move from "Windows 98" to "Windows XP"! Life is short, enjoy it!!

fotowiz, hey there! I can't believe that it's been that long, tho!?!? I've been to every Nationals for the last 10 yrs, where have you been? LOL The new laptop came with Vista, so... like I said, I like it but there are a lot of things that I have yet to figure out. The pop-up blocker/security settings are a real pain. Have to click "accept" on most internet pages tobe able to view/open them. THAT'S a bit of a pain. Haven't opened up the book or done the turorial, but the guy at Best Buy told me it can do all kinds of things (typical salesman-style). I'll have to sit down one of these days and see what this bad boy can do! You going to Knoxville this year? Hope all is well... talk to you later!

Hey foto, you hittin' on my girl, lol. She actually liked you from the year at Knoxille when you challenged me about stuff. Who'da thunk we would become buds over the years, I can't wait to get together with you and the Misses for a night or two at the Big E. She has forgot more about the internet than I know and for those that wanna get into stats they are now DEAD, she will become more of an enemy to the Posse than I ever was, lol. Mikey: I hope you don't mean that I am the one that will turn against the posse!?!? If it bothers you, then... I will say PA ALL THE WAY! LOL Yin and Yang, remember? I have PA friends, too... ok, most of them have defected to other parts of the US. But can ya blame them? J/K Hope some of you all will join in for TJ's chat room Tuesday night for some laughs! Till then... a devout posse fan from Kansas--signing out!

Yin and Yang? Now Kimmy is a Scott Bloomquist fan? Gonna get Mike to the taxi cab races this summer?

Funny commercial for the Mac was just on...pointing out all the "accept or block" commands that the new Vista operating system makes you go through.

Oh yeah....Hi Kim! Welcome back to the wired world.
