I thought Knoxville was working on a high-paying 410 winged race to be on that night? I know the All Stars are working to add a couple more Thunder Through the Plains events in addition to the four nights they already had in '08.

I wonder about the non-wing sprint cars at Knoxville from a financial standpoint. I commend them for thinking up something "outside the box" but I do wonder if there are enough fans to make it work. Knoxville is a 410 winged sprint car track and the other stuff just doesn't draw well. It seems that winged and non-winged racing draw from increasingly separate fan bases.

Since the Brodix 360 race was a brainstorm of Tom Schmeh and the Hall of Fame, might it be that Bob Baker is involved in the concept and promotion of this race on behalf of the Hall of Fame? If so, there should be good promotion of the event.

It certainly is something different. We'll see how it works.

John, have you seen the stands and pits at osky? I know they are quite abit smaller than k-ville but this tuesday night show seems to draw a crowd, I know I look forward to that race just because of the old days and this is the only non-wing race I get a chance to see. Not sure has happened but the last 3-4 years the car count has been pretty pethetic for a $30,000 to win show. Pryer to this Osky used to have 60-70 cars and had a c-d feature. Looking forward to this new show!

What class of open wheel car's, silver crown, sprints, or midgets, are racing this Non-wing Nationals?

For the last two years Manzanita Speedway has had all three divisions for the Copper on dirt and trust me, nothing boring about the big cars on that big 1/2 mile. Henry if you haven't gone to it yet, you need to.

Check out the entries for 2008... Click on Feb on the left, then entries Western States Midgets below press release. It will show all three division entries, what a field!!....http://www.manzanitaspeedway.us/news.html

Somebody is using their heads .... 2 nights of non wings at 2 big fast but different 1/2 miles in a three day period with big money on the line at both places. I suspicion this is John McCoy and Bob Baker putting their collective heads together and saying "Let's try something different to get some fans in the stands here on Sunday night" bet the crowd in the stands is quadruple or more of the Brodix deal. Nothing against the Brodix 360 deal it was just the format was kinda odd and most 360 teams other than "touring" teams have a hard time racing 3 or 4 nights in a row. Way to go who ever got this deal pulled off !!!

R A.

John McCoy and Bob Baker....they have absolutly nothing to do with the scheduling at Kville....Azteca ..What????...Who is Bob Baker???

This will be the best race of the year at Knoxville and there is no way in hell that I will miss it. Does anyone know if it will be sprints & midgets? Or just the sprints?

There's only one thing that could make it better and that would be for the WoO to step up and grow some balls and co-sanction it.

I only have but two requests of Knoxville on this race. 1st - PLEASE don't get scared. Let the Duncan's do their work so the track will be nice and heavy. 2nd - PLEASE do not run ANY winged cars on this night, so the track STAYS nice and heavy.

Another request might be to have both the non-winged sprint cars and the midgets on this same night! WOW that could be one hell of a show right there!!!

You all are forgetting the non-wing sprintcar race that was run during regular schedule of the track. Never will forget it Bob Weave made it to Turn 1 until he was high in the air. Help us Bob Wilson what year was that.

Also most of this idea came from a discussion at the pit shack when USAC was here for the midget races. Now the Iowa Speedway just needs the Silver Crown cars at Newton around this same time. Then these teams can bring their whole fleet of open wheel cars.

See my post above, all three divisions at Manzy in Feb. I don't know where you live but I always meet some Hoosiers at the Copper. I'm a Hoosier by birth, so maybe that's why I prefer non wing racing so much. It must be in my DNA. LOL

In this part of the world and that includes N.M. and of course S.California, non wing racing has never gone away, just like in Indiana. Some of the top drivers in USAC always come from this side.

Nah he's thinking of the Zimmerman memorial race they had at Knoxville AFTER all the other racing was done on the Friday of the Nats. Track was used up,nothing left, hence the race was very lackluster.

I doubt if Darbo has ventured from Knoxville to Osky for the Ultimate Challenge. If he had, then maybe he wouldnt think they are so boring.

Different strokes for different folks though. I used to think the Knoxville Nats was the best 4 days of the year. The last few that I went to though got more and more boring without much passing. With the price of tickets and travel etc, My other room mates and I decided it wasnt worth the cost anymore, and we stopped going.

I'm afraid you doubt wrong. Darbo has never missed a non-wing race in Osky since they started it on Tuesday and Travis came in, ran without a wing for the first or second time and won it. I do believe you are right, though, the nonwing race at Knoxville a few years ago that I was referring to was after everything was finished and just wasn't much. I grew up watching nonwing and love all the sprint car racing, be it wing or without. I will also be in Phoenix at Manzy for three nights of nonwing racing the beginning of November. You stand corrected, sir.

You are referring to the Western World at Manzy in November and what a great show that is.

You're right, that race that Sammy won was run on a track that had been used for winged race's earlier in the program and was one lousy track. Both the participants and knowledgeable fans were very disappointed in the way it was handled. If the track is prepped properly you guys in in for something special.

Started going to Manzy in '65. Remember all the great ones, Dockery, Billy S, Cleburg, Brown, Taylor, Matuszak, Leland, Ronny S, Griffin, and for the Western from the old days, Wolfgang, Opperman, Davis Jr., Al Jr., and many more. Man, those were the good old days.

Free live TV, worst mistake Knoxville ever made!

A high dollar PPV maybe ok, but they need a 3 hour tape delay, and run the races like the pro's they are rather than dumb everybody down with a 4 or 5 hour show that could have been over well before 9PM leaving more time for travel/party time

putting a count-down clock on the Jumbotron Scoreboard each Saturday night

1:09 min. 'til "Let's GO Racing!" would be a good idea also!!!!!!!

i seem to remember a lot of people complaining that the nats on speed this year were to be on a one hour delay.(did it work out that way or was it live?) everyone wants to complain no matter what is done. for what it's worth, what a bunch of selfish bastards. i do say that with total respect. lol. most of us seem to enjoy the idea of a little more mainstream fans being interested in the sport and having more knowlage of the sport. to have a live telecast of the biggest winged sprint car event of the year is not such a bad thing. making it a PPV would not help to gain the interest or the attention of moderate fans or newbee's. i am sure the amount of folks that could not make the trip to k-ville and watched the speed coverage far off set the few wine and cheese fans that chose to stay in their motorhomes. next year why don't they just watch the race from their motorhome while it is parked comfortably in their own driveway and make more camping space for the fans who are there.

some of the folks bitching about the delay were people who used to make the trip and PAY to set in the now vacant seats.

The non fan wouldn't know, or care if it was live or 2 months delay.

Several times I have witnessed the failure to complete the Sat night show due to weather.

The show COULD usually be finished by 9PM as there is vurtullay NO racing on Sat nights, simply the alphebet/

The A feature is scripted to start at 11 PM.

The fans have to sit and wait (and wait and wait) to watch the race, and hope that the tornados bypass the track. (yes, remember that night )

The races should be for the paying fan, NOT for the freebies sitting at home (or in the parking lot watching it on TV)

i thought the nats was an event. not a "get the thing over as soon as you can" thing. while the non fan may not have a preferance over live vs. delayed coverage, i am sure the sprint car fans across the country that for whatever reason could not be there in person to enjoy the event (waiting and all) were glad to have been able to join into the event as it unfolded. i can prob'ly acount for the same number or more fans that were glad to have the opportunity to watch the show live (or whatever it was) as you can fans that chose to isolate themselves from the live running. you complain about the event being delayed. while i will yield to the idea that the show may have been able to run at a brisker pace, the idea that it was such an inconvienience as you present it is absured. if the show would have encountered problems, and the schedule did not allow for it, that would be worse. the nats is an EVENT. sometimes it turns out to be a good race and sometimes it doesn't. the sat nite race is not the main reason most folks go. it is for the expierience. i myself thought that this years nats whent by much too fast. so i don't think that many fans really were so very upset that the sat nite show was not run out as fast as it possibly could just to get it over. those who feel the thing should be run in such a way to only suit there own opinions or needs are(i will say it again) selfish bastards. if you fall in that catagory or not is not my concern as i mean no disrepect to you and have nothing against you. as a matter of fact i am sorry i did not run into you in my travels as i was all over the place. lol. hard to believe we could have missed each other! you local folks have to either embrace the thing as yours only and keep it from having a chance to gain whatever more exposer it can outside of the sprintcar community, or be more open to letting it go a bit and giving it a chance to see how it may end up. racing in general and entertainment of all sorts is in a bit of a slump. the prospect of things getting better or worse in the next few years and beyond is not totally known. you seem so worried that the event might somehow, someday overshadow the town or the area. it is not about the town or the area, people come to the EVENT. i hope they will continue to in whatever form that it is presented to them(in person, live t.v., delayed t.v., radio, print, whatever) despite your views. i do not believe fans should be excluded or get a lesser thrill out of the event just because they can not be their in person. not every one is lucky enough to have your opportunity. why make it harder on them?

I understand that completly team wright-one... I would be tickled pink if they broadcast the Western World for instance and I would savor every minute of it no matter how long it took. Me, I never want it to end anyway. I'm always a little sad when a big event is over, it's going to be a years wait to enjoy it again.

I'll be in general admission toward turn one. I get there early and make sure I get the top row. Heck, if you don't see the water truck you're late. I've had the pleasure to have met a lot of people off these forums the last few years and believe it or not, no ones hit me yet! LOL

i have nothing against anyone and have really nothing to gain either way. is duane upset that that the pace of the show may be slowed a bit or is he just upset that it is televised? the comment that the nats should just be for the paying fans exposes his mindset. the potential is there to reach far more fans than could ever fit in the stands. duane's comment goes to show just how commercial the town has become with respect to this race. going through the town during the week i had a friend comment "boy everyone around here just wants your money". i do not fault and can understand folks in a sluggish economy making a buck, but the feeling of small town hospitality is escaping the place. i also can understand the possible local idea of being walked on by a growing number(or a shrinking number by duanes estimites) of inconsiderate race fans. i submit that the growing concern of the locals to extract more money from the fans, the hotels who raise the rates and the minimum number of nights you have to book rooms and other financial stumbling blocks acount for more empty seats than those looking to have the show run faster. i do not know what the financial arangement that the track has with speed as far as televising the show, but they must think it is something they want to do.

I'll look you up. I used to sit with the rowdies in turn one but as I got older and more mature, I moved down to the more sedate turn 4. lol. I might be in the pits helping a friend one or two nights. Can't print the pic because I'm not a power user! I will try to remember you're the guy with the border patrol cop attached to him. lol
