USAC sanctioned, replaces the Brodix race on sunday . I'm guessin by the ticket price it'll be 10 grand to win. Should be interesting.......maybe some additional drivers will take the lid off to run this event.....hmmmm...

It's about time Knoxville had a non-wing race. In my opinion the non-wing show the week of nationals in osky is always the best night of racing.

Where did you see this? And I wonder why the USAC sanction? Doesn't everybody have to buy a licence to run just this one race?

Does USAC have a rule like the Outlaws that they can't run other shows within miles or time of one of there shows? Maybe some of these guys would run Osky and then put on a lid for Nationals.

The Osky race was also USAC this year, and temporary permits are available for those that just want to run a race or two.....

I don't know about any time or distance rules that USAC may have, but the main question would be what do the schedules of their other National series look like over Knoxville Nationals week? There are some sprint car drivers that only drive sprints who might put a wing on for Knoxville (Jesse Hockett comes to mind), but there are also many who race in the other divisions (midget and Silver Crown) and wouldn't be able to/wouldn't want to miss a race in those divisions.

Somebody is using their heads .... 2 nights of non wings at 2 big fast but different 1/2 miles in a three day period with big money on the line at both places. I suspicion this is John McCoy and Bob Baker putting their collective heads together and saying "Let's try something different to get some fans in the stands here on Sunday night" bet the crowd in the stands is quadruple or more of the Brodix deal. Nothing against the Brodix 360 deal it was just the format was kinda odd and most 360 teams other than "touring" teams have a hard time racing 3 or 4 nights in a row. Way to go who ever got this deal pulled off !!!

Now if they would just pull the plug on live T.V. and make if important to be there again...I talked to several people that were there for the entire deal that didnt go to the track on Sat. They stayed in their motorhomes etc..and watched on the tube.. They could have their own food, bathrooms, drinks and could smoke...Then when the show was over walk to the track, and put the Sat. night ticket price in the fuel tank for the trip home...

Free live TV, worst mistake Knoxville ever made!

A high dollar PPV maybe ok, but they need a 3 hour tape delay, and run the races like the pro's they are rather than dumb everybody down with a 4 or 5 hour show that could have been over well before 9PM leaving more time for travel/party time

putting a count-down clock on the Jumbotron Scoreboard each Saturday night

1:09 min. 'til "Let's GO Racing!" would be a good idea also!!!!!!!

Thanks. The top of the page says 2008. According to the dates, they must mean 2009. Should be great. I remember a couple years ago when they ran a non-wing race it was pretty boring but they really didn't have too many cars at all. I think Sammy won it if I remember right.

My wife told me if I went to one more Sprint Car race
she would leave me.................I'm sure gonna miss
that ol' gal.

I thought Knoxville was working on a high-paying 410 winged race to be on that night? I know the All Stars are working to add a couple more Thunder Through the Plains events in addition to the four nights they already had in '08.

I wonder about the non-wing sprint cars at Knoxville from a financial standpoint. I commend them for thinking up something "outside the box" but I do wonder if there are enough fans to make it work. Knoxville is a 410 winged sprint car track and the other stuff just doesn't draw well. It seems that winged and non-winged racing draw from increasingly separate fan bases.

Since the Brodix 360 race was a brainstorm of Tom Schmeh and the Hall of Fame, might it be that Bob Baker is involved in the concept and promotion of this race on behalf of the Hall of Fame? If so, there should be good promotion of the event.

It certainly is something different. We'll see how it works.

I think the USAC race you are referring to was called "The Hawkeye 100" on 6-3-2000

These were the Big cars then referred to as the Silver Bullet's. There wasn't many of them there at all and yes, lots of people I talked to thought they were boring. The average regular Knoxville fan just doesn't enjoy that type of racing as the speeds were much slower as those cars are more of a finess style of racing. It was entertaining but the actual race was nothing to right home about.

Here's a link to some pics from that event and had some very good drivers there including JJ Yeley, Jack Hewitt & Kasey Kahne. I think we will have to defer to Bill W on the winner as who won that race was paged out of memory here.

Click Here for Hawkeye 100 Pics you will need to page down to the 6-3-2000 event

I really do think the National USAC Sprint Cars will definately put on a much better show next August and hopefully put a few more butts in the seats. I totally agree that the Brodix event has lost its lustre and needed to be replaced with something else. My thumbs up to all involved in making this call.

I will not be missing this race. This will be good if they remember to put plenty of moisture in the track. I cant wait to see sprint cars backing it in at the big old half mile. Good call by the track, the Brodix was for me the lack luster event of the week. Just to note, you quite possibly will get alot more non wing cars to hit Iowa now that they can run 2 events in a row. This is great news. You can bet TK and Hockett will be there both with a lid and sans lid. I cant wait! Oh yeah and one more thing, somebody posted the other day about an economical class at Knoxville and wished they would have winged 305's, I say have a 360 non winged class running 8 or so events with restricted motors and you would see the return of the little guy in racing. It would be great side by side action IMO.
Cheers!

Nah he's thinking of the Zimmerman memorial race they had at Knoxville AFTER all the other racing was done on the Friday of the Nats. Track was used up,nothing left, hence the race was very lackluster.

I doubt if Darbo has ventured from Knoxville to Osky for the Ultimate Challenge. If he had, then maybe he wouldnt think they are so boring.

Different strokes for different folks though. I used to think the Knoxville Nats was the best 4 days of the year. The last few that I went to though got more and more boring without much passing. With the price of tickets and travel etc, My other room mates and I decided it wasnt worth the cost anymore, and we stopped going.

I think the non-wing race John is referring to was a memorial that they ran during the Nationals I believe. Maybe Friday night if I remember correctly.

Two or three years ago, they ran an invitational race, "The Rich Zimmerman Memorial"; Rich's son posted the purse and the race was run on Friday Night of Nationals week as the last event on the track. Sammy Swindell won the race driving for Jeff Walker.....Rich was a huge non-wing fan, so his family ran this race in his honor after he passed away........
