Placerville’s James Sweeney hired gun for Meents Motorsports for Indiana Speedweek
By Bill Sullivan
GAS CITY, INDIANA (8-4-08) – Former Placerville Speedway rookie of the year and current top five point runner James Sweeney of Placerville is Indiana bound this week to compete in one the most prestigious events in Midwest open wheel racing, Indiana Speedweek. The event is known as Indiana Speedweek featuring the 2008 USAC Mopar National Midget Championship Series.
Sweeney has signed with Meents Motorsports, based in HighlandIllinois, to pilot one of their competitive midgets for the entire speedweek schedule. Meents Motorsports is familiar with the talents of James Sweeney, who is now in his third consecutive year of sprint car racing following a successful stint in outlaw kart racing. Earlier this year Sweeney piloted a Meentz Motorsports midget in the prestigious Chili Bowl in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
“I met the Meentz group in January at Chili Bowl and drove for them the first time then,” said Sweeney. “They’ve asked me back for speedweek and I’m really looking forward to it. I have the opportunity to run with some of the nations best drivers and I’m thankful for the opportunity.”
Indiana Speedweek will be among the best drivers in the nation for a five day stint that competes at five different tracks throughout Indiana. Sweeney departed from SacramentoInternationalAirport on Sunday following his event at Placerville Speedway and will begin driving for Meents on Wednesday in the first event of the tour that takes place at the ¼ mile GasCity 1-69 Speedway in Gas City, Indiana. After the opening event the next day will take the team to the 3/8 mile Union County Speedway in Liberty. Round three is at the 1/4 Bloomington Speedway. The fourth leg of the series takes place at the 3/8 mile Lawrenceburg Speedway and the series will conclude at the ¼ mile Kokomo Speedway.
“I’m looking forward to the whole week,” said Sweeney. “But my strongest interests are Bloomington Speedway and Kokomo. Those are the two tracks I have heard so much about. I’m hoping we can do well and make a good representation of California and El DoradoCounty.”
Like many young drivers Sweeney’s hopes are to one day race cars for a living. This week’s event will give the Placerville native excellent exposure as the series is closely followed by the media and race teams from throughout the nation.
So far in 2008 Sweeney is amidst one of the strongest seasons of his racing career. In the weekly Hoosier Tires Championship series at his hometown track, Placerville Speedway, Sweeney is fourth in the point standings, just 125-points from the lead. He has one top five finish in the 11 events that have taken place, four top ten finishes, a b-feature win and a heat race victory. Sweeney has started six out of 10 events in the traveling Civil War Series and ranks 27th in the points overall.
For his 2008 sprint car racing campaign, James Sweeney has a number of marketing partners including El Dorado Disposal, Ohman Trucking, Premier Powder Coating, Sierra Sign, El Dorado Fence, Prezler Homes, Buck Lewis Bail Bonds, Minutman Press, Placerville Brewery and Sweeney Land Surveying.
