Destiney Hays Weekend Race Recap

By George Hague

Rio Vista, CA…July 22…The first two weeks of Destiney Hays return has seen unexpected highs and lows as she returns to the cockpit of a Sprint car after an eighteen month hiatus. She joined the Dan Simpson Racing team at Silver Dollar Speedway on July 11th and set notice that she had not lost her feel for wild 410 sprint cars.

The July 11th Silver Dollar Speedway 410 points Series race kicked off Destiny's return and she did not disappoint when she qualified 8th quick, which placed her on the outside of the second row of her heat race. She transferred to the A-Main with a 5th place finish in the heat and that placed her on the outside of the front row of the feature alongside Brad Bumganer.

At the drop of the green flag Destiney shot to the lead and had stretched the lead to ten car lengths ahead of Jonathan Allard. She reached lap traffic on lap ten and had some difficulty getting through the slower cars giving Allard the shot he needed to real in the leader. On lap 14 Hays and Allard where side by side as they fought for the lead until lap 15 when Allard, in traffic, made the move to get by Hays. Destiney was trying to get back to the leader when she tangled with a slower car and ended her night with a broken front axle and a 16th place finish n her first night back in a sprint car.

Night two started off on the wrong foot and did not improve the entire night. During hot laps Destiney pulled the 8s DES Inc., Flowmaster, DryVac Services machine to the pits with a blown head gasket, the crew decide to bring out the spare car and try and get her ready for her number 1 qualifying draw. She was unable to make it out to qualify and had to start at the back of the heat in an untested backup machine. After a disappointing 10th place finish in the heat (she brought the car in early with a severe oil leak) she started last in the B-main. The B-main was a continuation of the night with handling issues and a tenth place finish ending the frustrating second night back.

The following weekend the team headed to Watsonville, Ca and the Ocean Speedway ¼ mile oval and Destiny's first look at the tricky Oceanside track. She immediately took to the track and looked like she had raced there for years timing in the 8s DES Inc, VacDewater, Flowmaster entry to second quick behind Tyler Walker. During her heat she had a great battle for the final transfer position with young masher, Evan Suggs and finished fifth and her first Golden State Challenge Series dash. She lined up sixth for the 30 lap A-main and looked for a strong finish when the night turned bad when she was involved in a crash and turned the car over and was unable to return recording a 23rd place finish.

Saturday night the team headed to the super tight ¼ mile track at Antioch, Ca and the second night of Golden State Challenge Series action. Again, Destiney took to the track and qualified the 8s in the second spot, once again behind Tyler Walker. Heat race action saw Destiney finishing 6th in the heat, missing the dash and relegated to a 9th place starting spot for the 30 lap A-main. At the drop of the green flag Destiney and three other cars went for the same spot in turn one and bringing her to a stop. On the restart while exiting turn 4 Destiney was caught up with another car on the front stretch and her second stop of the main and a disappointing 21st place finish.

Next stop for Destiney and the Bell Helmets, Lady Eagle, Flowmaster team is the two day Golden State 2008 season finale at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico. Ca . July 25-26. Destiney considers this her home track and has posted victories at he super fast ¼ mile oval.

Destiney will be signing her new Drivers cards for fans after the racing action Friday and Saturday night at the team DES Inc Trailer in the pits. Also available at the team trailer is the latest Destiney Hays apparel including tank tops, t-shirts and kids shirts.
