ASCS Canyon Region Adds Additional Manzanita Half-Mile Event

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (May 29, 2008) – With the opening one-third of the season nearly in the books for the Discount Tire Co. American Sprint Car Series Canyon Region, the series has added an additional Manzanita Speedway event to its September slate.

The series is now set to take to the famed Phoenix, AZ, ½-mile clay oval on Saturday night, September 20. The ASCS Canyon Region event replaces the originally scheduled USAC/CRA card set for that night.

The September 20 ASCS Canyon Region outing will mark the fifth of six scheduled events for the series on the half-mile. The series first card on the half-mile took place on March 29, with current point leader Jeremy Sherman beating Charles Davis, Jr., and Josh Pelkey to the line.

With the added event, the Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region is now set for an even 30 nights of racing in 2008. In addition to 19 events on Manzanita's 1/3-mile oval and a half dozen on the half-mile, the series also includes three events at Tucson's USA Race Park and two cards at Casa Grande's Central Arizona Raceway.

Through the series opening nine events of the season, four different drivers have reached victory lane. Sherman and Charles Davis, Jr., have each posted three wins, Casey Shuman has recorded a pair of triumphs and R.J. Johnson has reached victory lane once.

Sherman holds the series point lead with a 28-point advantage over Davis, with Johnson, Nathan High and Mike Martin rounding out the early top five.

A dozen different drivers have competed in all nine ASCS Canyon Region events thus far in 2008 (Sherman, Davis, Johnson, High, Martin, Josh Pelkey, Jeremy Reagles, Mike Leslie, Andrew Reinbold, Thomas Ogle, Justin Fisher and Bobby Taylor), with an average car count of 26.1 cars per event.

This is just a start of USAC getting kicked to the curb in regard to west coast sprint car racing. BIG things are in the works and the cards are being shuffled at this very moment. USAC (Kevin Miller) made a tactical error this year and as they say....."Dont let the door hit your _ _ _ on the way out."

Stay tuned..........

How about sharing some of your "inside" information? Oh, wait you can't yet! We have to wait...more drama

Two 375-mile tows from LA in a diesel rig getting about ten miles per gallon of $5.10/gallon diesel is around $400.00. (Fine for maybe ten car owners?) And 105 degrees when you get there. And hotel money. And, and, and. Did someone canvas the players to see who was interested? Just a thought.

(Will V-ville run a show that night? Ain't gonna cost $500.00 to go there.)

I think I might know what KOP is talking about. A situation that involves a track in Iowa might make a ripple effect all the way to the west coast. I find the press release in this thread interesting. Seems the release really highlights the fact one group is in while the other is out. Possible it wasn't intended that way but when you look at it, one could sure understand why it could be viewed that way.

Maybe because there were only 5-6 USAC/CRA cars at the last event. Not critizing anyone, I understand how costly travel is- but if it weren't for the locals, who usually run ASCS putting in 410s and racing there would not have been a show. Manzanita had no other choice

No secret about how I feel about USAC over staying their welcome, but KOP, I had some of the same feelings when ASCS came in and Shoved ASCA out. It's ironic that ASCA is still struggling like SCRA did and Ron Shuman is part of ASCS that moved them aside.

I'm pretty sure I know where you get your "inside" information and I know that person is smiling about the problems USAC is having in our yard right now, that's understandable. We had two winged ASCS groups racing in AZ the other weekend and that's OK. Since SCOA was booted out of Manzy the winged fan's have been hard pressed to see a race regularly except maybe in Tuscon. I guess my problem is that I'm used to and like having local people running the show here and in California. I liked the fact that Keith Hall didn't have to call corporate headquarters to see how to run the show. I could bitch to Keith, and I did, about how the winged cars didn't belong as the headliners of the Western World. I'm not all that keen on all the bullshit promises that are made and never kept because they were unrealistic promises anyway. More "national exposure" does not put fans in the stands, but this forum did at Victorville last tonight along with the word of mouth.

I wish the "traditonal" as in traditional sprint car was used more in our lives as well as our racing, it brings people and things together. Casey being a Shuman and a AZ boy had to win last night, it's a family tradition..LOL
