I grew up around the racing community so I wanted to get a racers input on my dilemma. I am a single mom and I have a 17 year old daughter living at home with me. She was dating this boy we knew from the racetrack and he got into a car accident (by himself). Then he got a DUI about 6 months later and lost his license. He was becoming sort of a jerk so my daughter broke up with him. Now a year later he's back and apologising to her and asking her out again. He has a drivers license that he got from the nearest state and claims that he's legal to drive again.
Should I be concerned? Anyone?

naw, just a fluke thing, im sure he'd like to spend quality time with her at the library, catching butterflies, potery. and well, just long walks on the beach, I mean what typical guy doesnt just give in to what they really want,
most people on here dont agree on much, so looking for advice on here is just a invitation for disaster, although I do have to ask a few questions (in case you daughters father hasnt already asked), does he drive American or Import? baseball cap forward or backwards? pants dragging on the ground? wallet chain ? (proubly with empty wallet), listen to country or rap? most importantly, can he sing the first verse of the star spangled banner? , this should get you a start ? if he passes, get her home by 9! if he fails , tell him to study hard, and try again in six months.

Let's look at the facts - he's gotten a DUI, and your daughter decided she didn't want the guy who treated her lousy hanging around. Does he deserve a second(or third) chance? Probably - but with conditions...
While he says that he's legal to drive, ask to see his proof of insurance - and verify that it's real, and current. While he may have changed, you cannot be too careful when it comes to protecting your daughter.
Set a strict curfew for your daughter - and make sure that he keeps it! He needs to EARN the right to see your daughter along with earning your trust and confidence. If he breaks the rules, well, you have every reason to impose whatever limits that you see fit. After all, it is your daughter....
Good luck. whatever you do.....
Chuck.....

just because he has a drivers license from a different state does not mean he is legal to drive in the state you live in i bet if you check he is not legal to drive in your state because he is under suspension in that state

Good points by the chief...
I'd call my state's DMV and see what they say about a DUI driver getting a license from another state, especially if the original license was suspended/revoked in the home state.
I'm thinking that maybe, just maybe, he falsified his application when he got the license from the other state....

You say she met this guy at a race track. At this particular race track they met do they race sprint cars on a regular basis or is this a full bodied track that just brings in the sprints for a special show?

you, being the parent, should have the best interests of your daughter in mind. ok so he got into a solo accident. it happens. so he got a DUI, ok now is where your brain should kick in. how old is he? is he of legal age to drink? if he is, dont you think he is a little old for your 17 year old? if he is not, do you want your daughter to be influenced by someone that is underaged drinking?
back to the DUI. most people learn there lesson from the first one if they get one. BUT!!! do you want to take that chance? especially if your daughter is in the car the next time he decides to do it? it could end up worse than just a DUI. ex: fatal accident while driving under the influence. are you concerned yet????
last i heard drivers license, and the suspension of them, go into a national data base. i dont believe it is possible for him to go to another state and get another license. in all the states that i have applied for a license i was made to surrender the one from the state i was moving from and i was ran for wants, warrents and suspensions before i was issued a new license in the new state.
so i ask again? are you concerned yet????

Wow, some of you really thought about this and gave me some intelligent, caring advice even privately through my e-mail. Some of you act like I'm stupid for even asking, and then some of you are just idiots.
This scenario played out a few years ago and I felt that I did give the kid a "Second Chance" after the first accident (he was drinking that time too) and then he blew it with the DUI and treating my daughter like crap and speaking disrespectfully to me. And NO I didn't let him bank into our lives when he showed up with an illegal out of state drivers license and wanted to take my daughter out. BUT when I read the post about "Shane Hmiel racing in the BCRA" and some of the stupid crap that people responded with, I thought maybe I was being too hard on this kid. I remembered some of the stuff he pulled and I researched it to refresh my memory http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXQEoTgdmX4 and I can't believe how some of you responded. Some of you are the same people who responded to me.
To the "Give him a second chance" crew. I guess you weren't very good at math. His dad got him his first chance and he got busted by NASCAR for substance abuse. Then he got his "Second Chance" and got busted again, then he got a "Third Chance" and failed another drug test so now he's suspended for life from NASCAR. sonoranatsays "Thank God, I once was allowed a second chance. We all mess up at least once". This is where tripcrwngoes "Say What?".
Was Steve Kinser given a second chance by anybody in NASCAR when he couldn't get that green piece of crap up to speed? I guess he should've been doing drugs then all the ass kissers like Shane Golobic would've welcomed him into their big toterhomes to watch some satellite TV. I checked out Golobic's website also and I think it's great that he gets straight A's in school. There's a lot of kids that get straight A's, that don't have Daddy footing the racing bill. So why should he care if some doped up driver crashes him out, daddy will just roll out another new piece of iron. I doubt that daddy would be as forgiving as his kid if they found out the other driver was doing drugs. "he was very polite and had an outstanding knowledge of truck racing" Duh Shane, his dad worked for Dale Earnhardt for years and the kid raced in NASCAR's upper divisions. I know you have some NASCAR ties through your team, but don't make it look so obvious. If Shane Hmiel is such a good guy (and he might be) then why did he have to travel across the country to find a ride? Maybe the people who REALLY know him are tired of giving him second chances?
Listen, I'm just a Mom and I don't know Shane Hmiel and I'm sorry that HE is the example that I am using to yell at all of you. I just can't believe some of the ridiculous comments that you folks leave on these sites. My grandmother use to say "If you can't say something intelligent, then just shut up and they'll still think your smart" then Grandpa would chime in "If you don't stand for SOMETHING, then you'll probably fall for ANYTHING".
"Thank You" to those of you who gave a heartfelt, intelligent response to my post as well as the other "Shane Hmiel" post. t-dub I looked at your website and now see why your responses don't make NUF sense. Shane Golobic, you are obviously a very talented driver and have a lot of family support. I think you should listen to Grandma, but maybe Grandpa has a point and for taking a stand on a subject that you may feel strong about, I commend you. I'm sure some off the handle comments from a single mom are not going to matter to you in the least, but I do wish you the best because I Love Non-Wing Sprint Car Racing.

I find it extremely ridiculous that you start calling out certain posters for what they have said about the situation you have with this boy............YOUR POSTING ON A RACING FORUM! This isn't DR. Phil. This is a racing forum and i feel it should be left as one. You don't see me bring my personal problems on here to have everyone and their mother evaluate it for me. I'm sorry if i sound like a jerk, but at least i have the fortitude to say what some might be thinking and not saying. That is your putting your personal issues out on the internet for everyone to examine and make a judgement on. You put it out for the public to comment on, so your going to take your lumps with posting on here IMO from some people. I don't damn them for that in one bit either.
Trophy Cup......Best race of the year hands down!

You really are a piece of work. You say your single..............GEE I wonder why. Can't take constructive criticism from people when you asked for some about your daughter. Are you one of those "pit lizards" that we happen to see at the race track looking for a baby's daddy? And please don't compare your situation with what Shane Hmiel has gone through, because it's not even remotely the same at all. "She must be so proud of her momma posting her situation on a racing forum, for all to see!" And by they way the only "lost" person is one who has to ask strangers what to do with her daughters situation with a boy on a racing forum. Why don't you write to "Dear Abbey" maybe she can help you out with parental advice that you so desperately desire IMO. Now back to racing. How about TK getting a GSC race win tonight, before heading back to Eldora next week and go Meyers and SK at Pevely tonight!!
Trophy Cup......Best race of the year hands down!

If you took all the junkies/drunks out of the race cars, the flagman may end up being the winner some nights.
