In last years Oval Nationals, Bud Kaeding passed Casey Shuman on the last lap to win the $30,000 top prize. Get the check and trophy. No problem right?? Ahhhhh not so fast my friends.

According to USAC's "RULE", you must have: "Required Head & Neck Restraint System. (HANS, R3, Hutchens II, Hutchens Hybrid)" If you don't, you forfeit ALL points, and $$$ for that event.

Go to www.racewayvideo.com . Find the highlight of the Main event Jeff K. shot that night. In it you will see BK drive into victory lane and get out of his car. Guess what? There isn't any of the above "required" systems to be found on BK. So........

If a rule is a rule, doesn't USAC owe the Massey/Shuman team the difference between first and second place $$ ??? This fact was pointed out to the USAC officials but nothing changed. I want to see the winner take the checkered flag and not a call by the officials myself. However, if your going to set a rule, shouldn't it be followed? If not, heck, lets put on any tire we want and puff up those cubic inches a little!

Remember the first Daytona 500???

1959 was the very first Daytona 500 on the brand new 2.5 mile superspeedway. Lee Petty and Johnny Beauchamp were battling for the win off of turn 4 on the last lap with the lapped car of Joe Weatherly in the mix. The three of them crossed the line side-by-side-by-side, Beauchamp on the bottom, Petty in the middle and Weatherly on top. Beauchamp celebrated in victory lane but three days later Petty was declared the winner when newsreel footage showed that he beat Beauchamp to the line.

Hello USAC, there's footage to be viewed! wink

BK won ,fair and square.his trophy ,his money. The head& neck restraint is not performance enhancing aid.I personally think it should be recomended not mandatory. The HANS lays right on my collar bone and my opinion is that was what fractured TJ's collar bone mid-season.As we're talking about USAC,we'll never know whether there's true documented evidence these things protect drivers of Sprint cars from injuries,or just another Bullheaded thing USAC has decided to shove down our throats.I seriously dought Mr. Shuman chose to file an official protest....He's a class act!

I agree with you big-time! My contention was, even if an item or device isn't a performance enhancing issue, if an organization (ANY organization) puts in a rule that says you lose $$$ and/or points for this or that, the rule should be enforced. What would happen if the next winner climbs out of his car and doesn't have any of these "mandatory" devices on? If USAC were to take away points and/or $$$, one would think that the Massey/Shuman team could be heard saying: "hello, what about us?"

Kind of puts that rule into a bit of a quandary doesn't it? yes, Casey is a class act. He will be the FIRST to admit he got passed fair and square. That's why he has NEVER aired out this issue on the board.

How about if USAC erases all the "non performance enhancing" rules from their rule book so they wont get caught in such matters? That should trim the rule book down by several pages and save themselves for answering to such issues. Since they turn a blind eye on the safety restraints, it would be comical if car owners ripped all the USAC stickers off their cars. Why not? If there isn't going to be a penalty........rip away!

Wow.. Oval Nationals is not a points race, and not put on by USAC? Some people really dont have a clue. As for the HANS issue..No, I have not bitched about it, Bud won the race... no argument there, BUT he did break a rule, a rule that was very contraversial, and kept ALOT of people away from the track because of this rule. No it was not performance enhancing in ANY way, but rules are rules. I was black flagged at the Ovals during WHEEL PACKING because they said my head nets were not mounted correctly! In the USAC rule book it says they are mandatory, but does not show a certain way they should be mounted. Keep in mind I run a full containment seat, which makes these nets useless anyways, but none the less, someone felt I was not following their rules, and pulled me in during wheel packing, yet when this issue with bud was brought up to them, they seemed to think nothing of it? That kinda rubbed me the wrong way. I mean not wearing a fire suit is not performance enhancing, but if you dont have one, you dont race. Up to date belts, all four nerf bars, rock screens, Radios, hoods, etc. etc. are all rules you have to comply with, or you dont race. So it had absolutely nothing to do with the outcome on the track, BUT where will USAC draw the line on looking the other way, and saying their famous saying...."I didnt see it."

I agree with Casey, rules are rules. If you're not going to enforce them, leave them out of the rule book.

This playing favorites crap is the junk you'd expect to see from some street stock racetrack in po-dunk nowhere. I would expect more from usac.

It's certain instances of selective rule enforcement that is hurting short track racing everywhere. Almost every small team that has been around a while can tell you of a time where they were penalized and 2 weeks later the big dog at the track got away with the same rule infraction.

Track promoters wonder why car counts are down. I'd have to say situations like this is one reason.

If you're a low-buck racer that works hard on the job all week, works on your car all night, and then you go to the track and feel like you don't get treated like the superstars do, it would make it real easy to find something else to do on the weekend.

Either you're baiting people, or you don't have a clue about what you're talking about = and do not want to admit it.

In either case, you've just shown who you really are...... so now, who is the moron?
