How can what are probably fresh or new engines blow up like they are in Florida.  It makes no sence.  First races of year and I lost count of engine problems. Very costly with motor cost and loss of purse money.

Volusia is traditionally an engine killer. Always has been, always will be.

Everyone is on the limit there and something with the air and climate makes that track a engine killer.

Simple solution.  Make a rule that you must finish the event using the same engine you used in hotlaps.

That would be a horrible rule.  Imagine waiting patiently for the Outlaws to come through town, and your kid can hardly contain his/her excitement to see their favorite driver.  Then, you see smoke from the car during hot laps and the car is not seen again that night.  The backlash from this rule would be terrible.

Cool weather at Volusia is great for speed, but terrible for motors.  Wednesday night was cold and damp, perfect for motor issues.

What part of the cooler weather is hard on the motors? Is it because of the high compression used?

Good air density because of elevation, cold temperatures....more  power and needs more fuel. Plus the shape of the race track the motors don't get to breathe much. Almost flat footed

As a Canadian I have never thought of Florida as a cooler weather destination.

Florida cold, 50 degrees at night. Smile I went to a day race once in October when it was spitting snow.

Saw a 70 year old win a 305 race at Lincoln in a snow squall in 2005 and he's still racing as of last year.

I'm not sure I'm following the math. If he was 70 in 2005, he's 89 now and still racing?

We have a local 410 racer, Chuck McGilvrey who will be 71 this year. I thinks he's probably raced for 50 years.

Correct his name is Jim Cowboy Kennedy he's been around forever started in the 50s. Most times he shows up alone.

Check out air density online for last wednesdays weather. It was the most extreme of all the days.  https://airdensityonline.com/track-history/Volusia_Speedway_Park/2024-02-07/

Any time a track record is broken or some sort of anomaly happens im checking out the weather. Your local track is probably on this list. https://airdensityonline.com/tracks/?filter=333

I have varified notes at the track and the website historical data and they are pretty close.
