With the All-Stars season over and Knoxville done, I hope maybe a few more cars will show. Anyone have an idea what car count might be?

They had 22 last year. I assume you'll see a few more this year given nothing else is happening to my knowledge. Guys like Hafertepe, maybe some ASCS drivers who have a 410, Bayston, Gennetten and hopefully a few All Stars. Having it with Devils Bowl and giving guys 2 races down in that area should entice a few extra cars.

Maybe Larson?  He won there with the All Stars last year.

I think Larson would be doubtful considering that he is in the final races of the playoffs for Nascar and it would be a career killer if he got injured at a dirt race during the last couple weeks to keep him out.

What's the over and under on these threads about car counts? Do people have a predetermined number in mind, for example: "If it's 25 cars and over predicted, I'm going. But if it's 24 or less predicted, I'm staying home"?

I went to a good race one time that probably had as many pushtrucks as sprint cars. It was a USA race. The guys fighting for the lead were named Doug, Steve & Sammy. I don't remember what the car count was., but I do remember it was a good race.

Car counts to me are like portion sizes at restuarants. A nice portion size doesn't guarantee a good meal, but it's a good start. And you'd like to know before you go whether you're going to leave hungry. Plus if you've been to the restuarant before and they served a 12 oz steak, and now they are serving 8 oz, you're bound to disappointed.

Same thing with car counts, if you're in an area where there are no 410s, you might be cool with 20 at a WoO show. If you're in Central PA and there is less than 35 at a WoO show, you kind of wonder why.

I was at that race, car count was around 13-15. I-90 speedway hartford sd, i think it was called red devil speedway back then, awesome race, pretty sure 1989. The car count never dictates the qualiy of the racing, but it sure is a good feeling when the car counts are good!

Yes! Notice how we remember it was a good race, but don't remember the car count. Smile

I used to chase races when I knew there wouldn't be enough Sprints for a 24 car Feature.  Up where I live it might require sitting through six classes of Stock Cars and Modifieds to see a Sprint Feature with a dozen and a half cars.  By way of contrast staying home and watching the best races between Floracing and Dirtvision usually guarantees a good car count (they're all special events with Sprints at headliner).  Some might recall the race in central Minnesota last summer with something like 17 cars.  That one was a little over an hour, mostly all freeway and I opted to stay home and watch other events.  Can't recall but I think I opted for an All Star race or Knoxville weekly on TV.

My circumstances are that my wife doesn't care for racing so I don't have anyone to travel with to share driving and expenses.  I just had cataract surgery so my vision is finally good to go for night driving as I can see a hair on a gnat's ass at 50 feet now.  Nevertheless, driving hundreds of miles from Stock Car and Modified country to Sprint Car shows makes no sense when I can watch the same race on TV for a fraction of the cost.  The last time I checked I was up to 40 tracks accumulated over sixty years and I am not one of these folks who racks up numbers of tracks visisted.  If a big race is taking place close to home and it's not too blistering hot I will still run out and see them sometimes.

I guess the way I look at it is that I try to get the most bang for my time and money.  There are fewer years ahead than behind and I have become more selective about my racing entertainment.  The entertainment value has to be there along with a minimum number of support classes.  Location, location, location just like real estate and this isn't the ideal location for Sprint Car races close to home.  We have a good limited deal both wing and non-wing that I like to watch sometimes.  Just have to convince myself that seeing them is worth sitting through Hornets, Pure Stocks, Street Stocks, Crate Late Models, Super Stocks, A Modifieds, B Modifieds and Mod 4's and whatever else they have on the card are worth sitting through to see them.  Most nights it's not.

24 is always a perfect number. 3 heats, everyone gets to run the A and everybody gets the "big" bucks and not just show money.

I think 32 is the perfect number but B main cars are

way underpaid.  $200 will not even pay for a tire.  So till they start paying B main cars a reasonable purse I guess you are correct at 24.  I think B main cars should get $400 min.   and 4 trasfer cars should also get  $200 for tranfer as they burn up tires and alcohal.

It's all about quality over quantity! A small field of great drivers is always better than a big field of average racers!

Looking forward to the new Golden State King of the
West series schedule!

+1

And as an added bonus the races get done 20-30 minutes earlier and there's less laps on the track prior to the A.

I get irritated when there's 25 cars and they run a 5 car B feature to eliminate 1 car instead of starting 25.

To a die hard race fan, a great race trumps a car count.,  however to a promoter trying to attract as many fans as possible a car count I believe is very important, if your promoting a big race and only 15 cars show up the average fan is not going to think that is a great value especially at a cost of $25 to $ 45 bucks, therefore not returning to the next big race!

Line the feature up by heat race finish and the heats are meaningful with <25 cars.

Back when the WoO lined the A straight up by time the guys that ran the B were hardly at a disadvantage at all.  They got their time back if they transferred.

I always think 28-32 is perfect, not too many cars but makes heats meaningful and more importantly it weeds out the cars that are going to cause cautions, etc. in the feature. Usually there will be 1 or 2 cars at any given race that can't complete 5 laps without spinning or bringing out a yellow so having a few extra causes those cars to be weeded out in the B main.

6 cars will win 90%+ of the races.ROY will have some competition unlike this year once Aaron was eliminated but McFadden is a good driver just started season later .There will still be 6 teams that struggle to win 1 race but needed to help make full field in some areas. Whether Ford,Toyo.or Chevy based motors are all to close to make much difference except for sponsorship. It seems to work but the teams running for $1000 to  make A plus whatever they are guaranteed by being a WOO member is hard to make it financially feasible. The All Stars are putting on good shows but Schatz.Sweet,Eliason,Haudenschild, and Schuchart would dominate that series.
