I disagree. Tell me if you're reading the situation differently than I am.
As I understand it, the car was legal when it was built 11 years ago. Since then, for safety reasons, the WoO has upgraded their rules to require thicker walled tubing for the frames. At some point, the frame was inspected and did not pass. At that point Reutzel knew the frame was illegal to use in WoO competition. He then took an inspection sticker off a frame that had passed inspection and put it on the old frame. At that point, he knew he was cheating. It doesn't matter that he liked that frame. It was not approved for racing with the WoO.
Can powder coating can make the walls of the frame thinner to the extent that they no longer meet the rules? I don't know. Whether it does or not, Reutzel knew he had an illegal frame and cheated by trying to pass it off as legal with the sticker from an approved frame. That seems pretty clear.
Look at the big picture. Suppose I were to cheat and use a frame that I knew didn't meet the rules because the WoO had changed the rules to make the cars safer. If I had gotten in a crash and gotten hurt or killed, who would that lawyer on the back of the phone book be suing on my wife's behalf? The car owner, who the lawyer will say should have known what was going on? The crew chief, who the lawyer will say should have known what was going on? The sanctioning body, who the lawyer will say should have known what was going on- especially since they do the inspecting? Or all of them, in order to find the deepest pockets? So, yes, I think it is a big deal.
Overall, it's a bad deal. It's a dumb deal. The guy has talent. Not trusting that talent, he cheated. He got caught and got penalized.

Cheating in racing, who would've thought!

Are you referring to Dietrich?
I can see why some guys don't like him, & I've goofed on him too, but can't see the hatred. (I prefer "Double Doofus" )
Nobody's perfect
"real race with real drivers"???? He's beaten the Allstars a few times, & plenty of wins in Pa., over the years. Has he ever beaten the Outlaws? Also I give him credit for "going off the porch" more than any other Posse guy (other than the ones who joined OUtlaw or Allstar tours)

“They made a proposal to finish out the season that I wasn’t comfortable with, I felt it was best for us to part ways and I’ll pursue some other opportunities that have been presented,” Reutzel says.
Huh, I suspect the proposal Roth made was " You can get your seat out of my car, and you can stick your favorite chassis up your ass"
The whole thing doesn't seem as big a deal to me as some. He cheated, tried to skirt a safety rule that put him, but not others at risk and got caught. Since it's a safety rule of course the penalty will be severe. Lost money, points, his ride, chance to race at Knoxville. But then... that's got to be the most weasly apology I've heard. He damn well knew that chassis was illegile or he wouldn't have swapped stickers. And he says it passed tech before but according to some accounts on here it had previously failed at least once. He left that part out. No mistake on his part, it was deliberate.
I still can't figure out why he would risk so much to run that chassis. Is it because he knew he had the good setups for it out of the box? That has to be a huge thing in your first year against the WoO.

I'll also add the National Open at Williams Grove in 2016 and back to back wins at Lincoln about seven or eight years ago.

1. Somewhere along the way I was led to believe these top dogs start each season with new chassis. They get bent up (possibly cracked?) along the way and are hard to square up.
2. if he knew that grit blasting actually reduced wall thickness, which is skeptical at best, then why the hell did he not measure it each time?
3. messing with tech stickers is just plain stupid. At best, you would contact the inspecting authority and request a reinspection after powder coat.
4. did any competitors come to his defense?
5. or are they all doing the same thing and just not getting caught?

How did you people survive the early 2000's when guys were drilling holes in every part of the car they could find? Swiss cheese steering wheels & God knows what else. 900 lb cars. He bent the rules a little bit with an old ass car, bfd.
An 'outlaw' finally does some 'outlaw' type shit and everyone gets triggered. SMH

Reutzel said he powder-coated the frame one too many times and that made one of the frame rails too thin. Is that possible?
|
The powder coating has no affect on wall thickness, but the media (sand) blasting to remove existing paint does. To obtain a "near white" anchor profile on metal requires a 2-4 mil thickness profile of material. Eventually after numerious re-blasting it will reduce the wall thickness to unacceptable levels. In my opinion, to sand blast tubing to reduce the wall thickness is a dangerous outragious situation.

Look, the guy broke the rules and got caught...Who gives a shit in this day of "catalogue car building", as an old fan of Smokey Yunick, I think it's good for the sport to have guys pushing the limits. If you think he's the only one out there cheating, you're either dumb or blind. It is obvious that someone internally rolled over on him. I was already a fan of him and his hard driving style, now I like him a little bit more. He will be a force to be reconed with when he returns, that just the kink of guy he is.
One last thing, to the shithouse lawyers on here talking about the "what ifs" on the thinner wall tubing causing someone to get hurt or killed, give it a rest...There are still guys driving without full containment seats...

You're mixing "outlaw" behavior with club racing in a tightly sanctioned club with a lot of rules that happens to use the word outlaw in their name- two entirely different things. If he had bent the rules a little bit with a 900 lb car, he probably would have gotten in trouble as well.

Everything about this smells like shit. Guy is lying out of his ass to save face.
Telling me an owner that booted a former champ that was 4th in points is going to let someone that got caught cheating multiple times in 1/2 to 2/3 of a season finish said season?

A lot of them didn't, that's the reason for rules like this. This wasn't a cheating thing as much as it was a safety thing that he had been warned about before. He went out of his way to lie and be deceptive to the officials and the WoO. That's his character, finally caught up to him. Why doesn't anyone talk about the kid that got run over in the pits a couple years ago? The same character was shown then. Difference is that wasn't on a national level.

You're an idiot, you don't know Jack Shit about the man's character !! If you don't know him personally, you're just making an assumption of his character and assuming makes you an Ass !!
How does he go out of his way to lie to the WoO officials ? It says in the WoO press release on the incident that when they confronted Reutzel about it, he admitted to what he had done. The shit you spew is nauseating.

Smokey stretched the rules, got caught, probably several times, & he's still considered the All Time Great NASCAR mechanic
Plus he's originally from Pa.

Have any video links for that? Couldn't find it...
I've seen Danny do some questionable stuff on the track, but I've seen lots of guys do that, & his interviews aren't the most diplomatic, obviously
But I only go to Pa. a few times each year, you've probably seen him more....

You mean this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nz30cJtflRc
Looks like a clean win & answers my question about if he ever beat WoO
Did he do something in the heats? Not doubting you, just curious...
