Why do midgets use coil overs & sprint cars use torsion bars?

Also, what kind of gear ratios do they run at Chili Bowl?

I had another tech question but can't remember it!  wink

I think most midgets at Chili Bowl had coils on front and T Bars on rear.  Coils rebound quicker than bars.  If you compress a coil it will decompress quicker than a T bar can unwind.  This transfers weight to rear for traction  quicker.  My guess is that on larger tracks they would tend to be mostly T bar cars.  I remember at Chili Bowel a well known driver switched fron all coils to coils on front and T bars at rear.  Most of WOO teams tried all coil cars about 1990.  Sammy was the most successful getting car to handle.  I do not know how to explain it but all coil sprintcars seem to go up and down instead of planting car.  I could be full of BS but think I am correct.

Correct. Sprint cars on a rutted track SUCKS. Because of the coil spring it would just bounce. The biggest issue was the LR,  a tie down shock was in a constant fight with the spring, with the wing and downforce it just wasn't worthwhile.  Coils work best on a tighter track, they transfer weight quicker as linbob stated. The stacked rack cars were around for awhile because the weight transferred left to right evenly. The sprint car chassis has basically been the same for Sooooo many years, same with steering hasn't changed since early indy cars.
