When the Cup cars take to Bristol on dirt in 2021, it will be with independent rear suspension. I believe this will result in better (maybe still not good) racing compared to the solid axel trucks. I found this article from 2003 that talks about the pros and cons of IRS on dirt ovals. A lot of what he talks about is over my head, but he makes it clear that the only reasons IRS isn't currently in use on dirt is due to expense, lack of understanding, and that it is illegal almost everywhere (due to the first two reasons).

Never in the history of racing will more money be thrown at trying to get an IRS late model around a dirt track. It may take a few years, but sooner or later the advancements from NASCAR relative to IRS on dirt will trickledown, first to late models and modifides, and maybe even to sprints and midgets.
IRS has been tried on a few sprints/champ cars with limited success due primarily to the reasons the author noted in the article above, but my prediction is that money from NASCAR will overcome many, if not all, of those obstacles.
I found this aspect of NASCAR's trip to Bristol very interesting and didn't see anybody else discussing it. Maybe I am having a "Chicken Little" moment.
