My time around midget racing is limited at best... I'm but a sprint car fan off the reservation watching Larson do what Larson does....So an honest question, do midget always have about 10 double flips and 25 spin outs a night or am I just seeing them under a full moon.......

I think that's normal. The only racing event I'm aware of that that has a "Flip Count" is the Chili Bowl.
The all-time record for the Chili Bowl flip count is 75, set during the 2019 edition and capped off when Christopher Bell turned his car over during the celebratory donuts for his third Chili Bowl victory.

The one thing you have to realize about Midget Cars are this. They are with out a doubt the most powerful and fastest race car pound for pound bar none. The light weight combined with the high HP make the Midget car very exciting and also challenging to drive and race. On some smaller quater mile and even three eighths mile tracks the Midget is either equal to or faster than the Sprint Car depending on the driver of course
Back when Racing was in its infancy Midget cars were refered to as "SMALL CARS" and Sprint Cars Were refered to as "BIG CARS" race teams or individuals would actually add length or take away length to these cars and compete the same car in Both type races. They even had Small Car and Big Cars racing in the same races. The differences between Midget Cars and Sprint Cars is more or less wheel Base even today.
I often wondered if Sprint and Midget Cars raced together on a 1/4 mile track which one would win. I would never bet against the Midget in that race and with the right Driver the Midget would probably win. Weight To HP Ratio the Midget is the fastest car on the track bar none. Althoough it doesn't have the Torque of a Sprint Car, because of the Lack of Cylinders, (4Cylinder compared to 8 Cylinders of a Sprint Car) but they do have the HP Top End Speed and Suspension to put all that power to the tires unlike a Sprint Car.
Just my 2 cents

What is the difference of HP to Weight ratio between a midget and a 410?

Im sorry but I cant answer that. The statement about that, - that I made came from many a book and article I have read over the years that are way smarter that I am. Also I was very involved with ARDC and SMRC in the early 80s to late 90s. I built my first Midget Car when I was 14 years old. My father knew an accountant that bought one and my father volunteered my services to build the car for him. I built it in 5 months. Had to wait on parts he didnt have a ton of money. We had a 2000 cc Pinto Engine with a Jackson Drive on it. It wasnt the best but it competed very well against the Sesco and the brand New to Midget Racing VW Engines. Those VW Engines were state of the art back then and MY GOD Were they fast and almost indestructible compared to the Sesco Buick V6 and Chevy2 engines of the day.
Just talking with guys involved in Racing they all stated Pound For Pound the Midget is the fastest Race Car on the track

I think the reason they flip a lot is short wheelbase, which tends to make them "squirrelly"
"Weight To HP Ratio the Midget is the fastest car on the track bar none"? i think not...
Going by WoO weight limit at 1400lbs, estimated 900 Hp. & USAC midget 1,035 lbs & 400 HP, sprints carry 1.5 lbs/ HP & midgets 2.5 lbs/ Hp
But sometimes the midgets seem faster...

I used to like to run down to Sun Prairie and take a few pictures of them every so often. Not as much banking down there but it's still a great place to watch Midget racing. Here is a link to one of my Sun Prairie photos

First off, I thank you all for informative answers without going off on something or other.. That's a minor accomplishment anymore... and before I ask my next question it should be known, that any form of racing that actually has a stat known as the "Flip Count" brings a Yahoo factor that must be admired.... Now question: I watch sprint cars and to me, hands down I'll take wing over non-wing, but I realize thats just me... So I'm going to assume someone along the way thought of that on midgets... what happens to a midget with a top wing???

The exact same thig it does for a sprint car more down force faster times more wear and tear on motors and tires and YES it absorbes the impact and creates a safety factor when flipping.

I can't answer that. I have seen photos of them with wings but I believe they were pavement Midgets. I would imagine that they probably would be less twitchy but the best Midget racing is what you're seeing on Floracing.
My only exposure to Midgets has been a couple race in the early 60's when I was a kid and a handful of trips to Sun Prairie. I was doing photography at the time and a photographer friend asked me if I wanted to tag along. I liked it so much the first time that I went back a few more times including solo on a vacation to the Dells. I stopped shooting and haven't been there for probably ten years dating back to before they removed the inside guard rail. Anyways, long story aside I like them enough to check the results and have watched them on TV since we first hooked up to cable in the mid 80's. They're fun to watch in person.

The answer to your question is no, every class of open wheel cars have their moments at times. As others have said, watching midgets buzz around a tacky, high banked quarter or 3/8 is unbelievable. If you ever venture to the midwest (or are from here), Belle Claire Speedway east of St Louis is a must see for Powri midgets. Jacksonville & Spoon River are also awesome tracks for midgets.
Also, ARDC out on the east coast have put wings on midgets... believe they have run them with and without over the years.
In summary, I love winged & nonwing sprints... but midgets on a short track are the shit.

ARDC and SMRC ran wings for a very long time they removed the wings when they raced with USAC. The wings do help alot with downforce and corner speed they also add the safety factor by absorbing the impact on flips. Winged Midget racing is crazy fast and very competitive, but it did wear out motors and tires faster just like the Sprint car.
On another note ARDC is all but folded up at this point in time. Costs like everything else have gotten out of hand and alot of the guys have either went Nini Sprints 305 sprints or 360 Sprints. The motor costs are way out of hand for Midget Cars and you can run a 305 sprint car for much less.

I like both midjets ans sprints but the 410 sprint cars at 900+ H.P. are much faster.Close racing is what most fans like and that is usually on tracks 3/8 and smaller. The shorter wheel base makes them a handfull sometimes.I used to race mini sprints and would get to drive some different midjets and they were a blast. The midgets were everywhere after the war but as costs went up and just like everything numbers went down. The Chilli Bowl is the premier midget event and its timing allows many top racers from different venues to compete for a Golden Drillers indoors.

The Chilli Bowl is the PREMIER RACE of the Year for Many different venues. F1, SCCA, Indy, Usac, Sprints, Modifieds, Formula V, Formula Ford, Drag Racing, Austrailia, England, and New Zeland all race this event. To Drivers theis event is the World Series, Super Bowl and Olympics. The top drivers in all of Motor Sports want to win this event. It is the prestige and Noterirety of winning this event that makes it one of the Biggest Races of the year. So many top drivers try to get into the A Main year aftr year and fail. It becomin the WHOS WHO of Racing, and is probably the most difficult racr to uailif for let alone win. Larson said it when he won it, WINNING THIS RACE IS THE BEST FEELING IN THE WORLD, EVEN BETTER THAT WINNNG THE DAYTONA 500. Only the best of the best get in the A Main and even then there is a whole lot of luck to do that
