Didn't see the Chilli Bowl and could not find any post-Chilli Bowl interviews where Bell said anything negative after the race but Justn Zoch commented in his monthly Dirt Magazine article (an opinion shared by several media members he said):  "Bell could have appeared more gracious in defeat" and this may have "tarnished his reputation".  Is there a link to this post-race interview?

The only nugget I found was from Reutzel after he got into Trey Marcham as Reutzel sat in his midget during that caution and being told that Marcham was very unhappy:  "with all the cars I passed tonight if thats the only one I wrecked I feel I'm doing pretty good".

Hey...

Thanks for posting and reading Dirt Monthly Magazine. Here is exactly what I wrote about the post-race in my column in the January issue.

"Christopher Bell was very clearly disappointed following the post race and I’ll not denigrate anyone for not properly handling disappointment as we all have our instances where emotions rage over sportsmanship but the clear impression gathered from media and fans I’ve talked to were that, as a three-time champion who finished runner up, Bell could have appeared more gracious in defeat. Bell is too big of a star and too great of a kid to have his reputation tarnished. I hope he uses this as a learning moment. The greatest champions know how to lose the best, too."

I meant to convey that there were people commenting after the race and that Christopher should use it as a learning moment so that it doesn't become a bigger issue in the future. Bell is a tremendous ambassador and I wasn't saying his reputation was tarnished but simply that he could have been more gracious in disappointment and I don't want him to get that reputation. I'm certainly not trying to give him that reputation, just to clarify. That was never my intention.

Cheers,

Justin Zoch

I've been a Tony Stewart fan ever since his USAC days.   I don't know what Bell did or said, but he didn't get where he's at by losing obviously.   Honestly, I can't see where Tony or Sammy has lost any of their loyal fans because they have a tendency to behave like an ass once in awhile.   Bell is nowhere near as polarizing as either one of those guys.

Oh, I get it, you didn't mean to be a gossip. I hope you use this "as a learning moment."

Thanks for taking the time to respond on this board.  I will admit that I didn't see the interview.  But the article where you quoted yourself contradicts itself in the first sentence you say "I'll not denigrate anyone for not properly handling disapointment" but then in the very next two sentences you say "Bell is too big of a star and too great of a kid to have his reputation tarnished.  I hope he uses this as a learning moment."  In your second and third sentences it sounds to me like you're "denigrating" him by saying I hope he uses this as a learning moment, if you're not denigrating him, what does he have to learn from in your opinion?  Also those last two sentences sound to me that's your analysis, not what fans and media were saying but maybe it is and it's just punctuation making it confusing.

Like I said I didn't see the interview but why would you expect a guy to be grateful he finished second just minutes after the race finished?  Sure the next day he can reflect and think about how many cars he beat but I would expect him to be upset right after the race.  Personally I would love to see a driver in NASCAR with some personality, someone who finishes second and is upset with whatever that they didn't win.  I'm tired of seeing every driver get interviewed and being so worried about not saying the right thing.

Well, there are a couple of  reasons why I have never won the Chili Bowl, or hit the big time in open wheel racing:

1) As a three time Chilli Bowl champion who finished runner up this year, I simply would not have appeared gracious in defeat. I would not have been planning to lose the big race, nor worrying about my reputation somehow being tarnished by a second place finish. I would have been damn disappointed iin myself because I had planned to win, but instead I had lost.

2) I'm not that talented. Those that are, have my permission to be unhappy with losing.

ps. I can't imagine someone like Jack Hewitt being gracious in defeat.

Hewitt may have told someone to go f*ck them self  if you stuck a mic  in his face right after climbing out of the car.

Right after a big race that is not about the money and only one person would not have been happy with second isnt a good time for an interview. The promotors loved it when Hewitt,Sammy,Stewart, and A.J would say a few explicates or maybe a punch or two and the crowd did to.Now it is sponsors, brand, crew, and then about the race. The days of a fight where a race breaks out are gone but they continue to show the Allison Cale fight.Of course then the punches connected now it is no contact fighting.

Just be glad he didn't have a Randy Marsh Wheel of Fortune moment, like another competitor did on the live broadcast.

I guess this whole thing is my fault.  I really should have put in the positive things you had to say about Bell and not take it out of context.  If I was going to do it all over I would have put in all your quotes.  I now see how unfair it was for me to pick out those two partial statements and not the super-positive things you had to say about Bell in DIRT.   Blame my post on "old age" with its accompanying "brain loss".  You did not say, "he had his reputation tarnished", but he might have tarnished it as other media members who sit in the booth with you agreed was a possibility.

If Justin Zoch reads this post, I love interiews with drivers, an entire month's  issue with only interviews--I know it can't happen. But,interviews are easy to do,  I think, just call a driver and do an interview. For me, never enuf interviews.  The more interviews of drivers/crew chiefs, etc the more I like it.  I'd think nearly all race car drivers would give you an interview if asked,  and I know, only enuf room for so much material each month.

Love the "new" Dirt magazine.  More than 1/2" thick every month.  A lot to read and the more pages the better.

I wouldn't say that's entirely true.  There are plenty of people there who would've been ecstatic about just making the A-main.  Those same people, I'm assuming, would have been beyond over-joyed to finish second, whether it be because they're under funded or never driven a midget before this event (I think of Matt Juhl making the A-main at Knoxville).  But that wasn't the case with Bell, he was a contender to win.

Why make something over nothing.  I have heard driver say "next race I am going to put that SOB over the wall".  This happens when a mike is jammed into a drivers mouth right after a race.  I once saw Gordey Johncock take a swing at Johnny  Rutherford while J.R. was being interviewed after a race.  His fist glanced off of JR with no damager and interview continued just like it never happened.  A.J. Foyt grabbed Johncock and led him away.  If this happened today it would be  such a big deal that National News would broadcast it.  It is crazy today so much is made of something you say or do not say in the heat of the moment.

Right... can you imagine how wound up a driver is after risking your life in those crazy races?

They definitely need some "decompression time".... but probably interviewers want the controversial, heat of the moment comments
