I'll swear, does anyone understand anymore what a slidejob is? A racer could make a clean pass on the outside racing past the flagstand and the announcer would scream SLIDEJOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

+ 1   The term 'slide job' is way over used now days, notably by announcers.  Should a car on the inside of the track pass a car on the outside and then pull in front of him on the straight we too often hear yelled over the pa a frenzied "Sllllllliiiiiide job!!!"  It was just an inside pass.  Quit trying to make it sound more exciting than it already is - it doesn't work for me, the racing is exciting enough already.  Yes slide jobs are exciting but overuse of the phrase only cheapens it.  By definition the car has to actually 'slide', not just simply move up in front of the outside car.  C'mon!

I agree it is over used and i am to new of a fan to reference the origins of the term or its true definition. Racing is exciting but it is an announcers job to cheerlead imo. They can go too far but they should add or create excitement for an event, again imo.

Does the perfect slide job cause the other car to hit the brakes thus removing momentum thus cresting more lead, or is the perfect slide job timed so well nobody has to let off and both keep full momentum?

Or does that question have a different answer from the driver throwing it and the fan watching it? The driver likely wants him to hit the brake but the fan might want 2 fast cars into the next corner for another exchange!

Nope.  Nope they don't Murph.

I you're dumb enough, as will I unfortunately be, to tune in on Sundays, you will hear Michael Waltrip and Jr. throw the word "SLIDEJOB" around like they have come up with a new term.

Almost as bad as when Johnny Gibson always says cars are side by side when they are nose to tail.

Let me see if I can translate this into Canadian. Imagine every time someone takes a shot in a hockey game, the announcer yells HAT TRICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Smile

Can you really do a slide job on a big asphalt track in a NASCAR mobile?

Or when he says they are nose to tail and they are 25ft apart.

I'm not trying to nit-pick or anything, I'm just throwing this out there as a different perspective on it here.  First off, I will say Jr. isn't my favorite announcer, he was my favorite driver when he raced but he just doesn't do it for me as an announcer (love his podcast though and I do think he's a pretty cool guy).  I know there were a few people who seemed to be offended by Jr saying "slide job" during a race.  This is the way I took it.  It was the last lap, Larson was on the inside and Jr. yelled slidejob just as they were entering the corner.  I don't think anyone who has watched Kyle Larson would've been surprised to see him drive in too deep and slide up (hopefully) in front of Busch to win the race.  Which I think is exactly what he was trying to do since he ran into the side of Busch.  I didn't take it as him thinking he was coming up with a new term.  Jr. isn't a stupid guy, he knows other people watch other kinds of racing and I'm sure he does too.  I took it as him using a common sprint car term with a sprint car driver at the right time, almost (he didn't complete the slide job).  Now I don't watch a lot of NASCAR races and by the time Jr is announcing I've pretty well given up on it for the year, so does he yell slide job a lot?  That's the only time I've ever heard him use it (I'd love to see a clip to be proven wrong).  As for Michael Waltrip, I've never heard him say it, isn't he just a pre race guy?

There was actually a run of a few weeks where I swear every single pass became a "slide job".

Well, technically....... for that to happen, your buddy would have to let up a bit. Otherwise there might be some contact made, followed by some ugly results.
